Californian
Porter's in the Forest is an upscale restaurant located on the Poppy Hills golf course in Carmel, California. Porter's in the Forest takes pride in using locally grown and sourced ingredients. The menu is always changing, utilizing the bounty of herbs, fruits, and vegetables that grow practically in Porter's backyard. Add in the proximity to the shoreline and access to fresh seafood, and the plates at Porter's are always at peak freshness. As for the menu itself, the appetizer section is instead titled "treats," an excellent way to describe these small plates. Be sure to give the short rib tortellini's a try, with parmesan brodo, peas, tempura mushrooms and a spring herb pesto. Under the entres section, the pork chop is certainly one of the most popular choices, being topped with pickled kumquats, charred onion, chickpea panisse, carrot jus, and fermented local honey.

We had the 5 course tasting menu at Porter's in the Forest on Saturday 1/16/16. It was terrific, and an excellent value. The first course was a delicious scallop ceviche, the second roasted cauliflower. Next came a halibut course, with puréed squash. The filet was perfectly cooked with great accompaniments. We were very full, but the bread pudding to finish was superb. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant in the Poppy Hills Golf Club.

Really a massive disappointment. The ambience is not fine dining. It's more sports bar. The black cod was fishy. The other dishes our party had were acceptable but none really good. The kitchen messed up several of our orders with those from another table. The waiter looked like he was 19 years old and was annoying. He apologized for the chef who he said was having a 'bad day'. The chef did come out to apologize but it seemed insincere.

Invited a senior colleague for our periodic lunch. The food review applies to lunch only as they also serve breakfast and dinner. The club, dining venue/bar and view onto the course no frills and great. Outside seating is comfortable with wind shelter and firepits. Both eating areas can get loud with golfers coming and going but hey - it is primarily a golf club with pretty nice amenities. The support staff and management were all exceptionally helpful and attentive never intrusive but always there. Service was excellent and the chef delivered one of the dishes he had prepared for an appetizer - the gnocchi was good not special. My guest loved the place but remarked that his Reuben Sandwich was not up to expectations. My plain Salmon Salad was good. The coffee was robust and tasty. The overall experience was Good and the venue served it's purpose without muss or fuss. We are both of the opinion that the food could improve. I will try again before I make a recommendation to my other friends to go for lunch. That is why I won't recommend it yet. If you are a golfer, and the course was busy on Friday- the club is a good, organized and functional place and course is newly redone and impressive.

So much has been made about the NEW Poppy Hills Golf Course and the completely remodeled clubhouse and restaurant. They certainly hit the mark with the remodel as the views are much improved and the place is comfortable, open, warm, and inviting from the moment you step inside. Now appearance can only take you so far. We really wanted to try their club sandwich to experience their homemade bacon but that is no longer on the menu. The menu, while limited, has some different items that you won't find elsewhere. We ordered the Korean BBQ cheesesteak I believe they called it. It comes like a Philly Cheesesteak but with Korean BBQ beef and homemade Kimchi. While the meat was cooked nicely the bread/roll was so soggy that I had to eat the sandwich with a knife and fork. That is just wrong. The kimchi had no taste to it all. Probably the worst rendition of a Philly Cheesesteak ever. While the makeover looks great and the service is excellent the entire establishment, both golf and food, are not living up to the hype.

Pretty setting and a good option for a quiet business lunch, except when a golf event is going on. Food is good, portions generous. The service is slow and needs to be brought up a notch.

Nice clubhouse facility with better than average clubhouse food and beautiful view of peninsula forest links. Can eat outside on a warm day. Lots of noise with lots of TV monitors. It is what it is.

Excellent food and service. Extremely loud group at the bar diminished the overall experience. In the future, we will come back on a different evening of the week in the hope that the loud (intoxicated?) golfers are Friday regulars at the course.

Thought the grill atmosphere was not conducive for evening dining but more for lunch. Food was good but prices too high for a grill. Wine charges also too high.

The meal was one of the best we have had in the area. The food is all organic and we enjoyed the eggs bene with caviar. The pancakes with ricotta cheese were the best we have had. However, don't ask for one extra egg on a child's meal. We paid over 60 bucks in drinks, 70 in food, were locals and they charged us 60% of meal for an EXTRA EGG! Are you serious I asked the waitress??? She took the bill to correct it and added even more to the bill!! When I brought it to her attention that I don't mind paying more but she should let me know that its cheaper to just order a second meal and take it home, than ONE EXTRA EGG. She said she didn't know..,.... really??? She asked me if I wanted the manager.... I then said, no, I will just leave a terrible internet review about it, if you don't fix this on your own. You should go talk to the manager yourself. Not ruin our Easter meal, by bringing the manager to the table over this. Go fix it, please. Don't make a scene in your restaurant on a Holiday..... She did not help at all......... we paid the bill with the overinflated EGG CHARGE and here I am writing this review, as I said I would. We will be back, but we will never ask for another changed plate ever again and I will never let this waitress at our table again. She had know idea how to treat good paying customers or handle guests at all. We left upset about how we were treated but happy with the food. Great chef, terrible help at the tables.

We had been there for a special event dinner and their Thanksgiving meal and were very impressed. However, the current dinner menu is very limiting. The food was over priced for what you received. A tiny farmed abalone, for seventeen dollars, was outrageous. This might be a much better place for lunch. The view is stunning. There is a reson we were one of only three tables filled on a Saturday night.

Surrounded by nice golf course tree views on deck but service was terrible and food was fair and you are surrounded by golfers greeting each other.. Best for appetizers, lunch and drinks on a nice day.

Innovative cocktails and creative recipes are served by an enthusiastic and friendly staff at this newly renovated club house. The views are lovely and you can look out to the up-lit pines on the golf course. Decor is modern with high ceilings and a nice mix of wood and glass. A wrap-around deck is set for outdoor dining on two sides. We wanted to order the signature watermelon tequila cocktail but it wasn't available the day we dined so I tried the pomegranate version which was very exciting! This venue works as a casual day destination and dresses up nicely for evening parties. I've seen both and was very surprised at how one place can shape-shift from day to night. My husband and I most recently dined for Thanksgiving and we shared and enjoyed Chef's unique dishes until stuffed. I just now enjoyed leftovers for lunch!

The service is absolutely stellar, the Happy Hour on Monday nights during football season is an incredible bargain. We go often on Mondays. Our only complaint is that the staff doesn't seem to be aware that there are appetizers that are 1/2 price. The server goes and checks and then comes back and says we are correct. Maybe make up a Happy Hour menu? The food is excellent, the only item we've had that wasn't up to par was the chocolate cake which was a plate of crumbled cake that didn't even equal a whole piece of cake and no frosting. Too many flavors, pureed pistachio on a corner, olive oil and salt. I can see the pistachio, you could eat it or not but the olive oil added nothing to the mix. It was $7.00. Our advice--ask what the dessert is and ask for a detailed description of how it's prepared.

The food is too expensive for what you get. I would only return for drinks and the view and because it's close but the food can't compare to other golf lodges very near by. We had a hanger steak dinner and the steak was 3.5"x2". That's an appetizer. The service was good though.

Porters has done what was needed in Pebble Beach for a very long time- wonderful fresh food, inventive menu, appropriate sized portions and a great selection of beer, wine and a full bar. Service was spot on!
