$31 to $50
Seafood
We accept reservations at our communal tables on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday for dinner. Limited reservations are accepted Thursday-Saturday.

You are welcome to walk in and add your name to our list or dine at our bar.

Eat the Rich is an oyster bar by James Beard award nominee Derek Brown and award-winning oysterman Travis Croxton of Rappahannock River Oysters. Featuring local oysters and a menu inspired by the Chesapeake Bay, Eat the Rich is a tribute to mid-Atlantic cuisine and the great oyster houses of Washington, D.C. The kitchen offers seafood dishes ranging from smoked trout hash to skate wing. The bar, manned by bar manager Paul Taylor, serves oyster shooters, classic drinks, and signature pitcher cocktails.

This isn't your typical oyster bar. At Eat the Rich, you can eat, drink and listen to rock music. It's named after a Mötorhead song, after all.

The wait staff was phenomenal. Great service! The oysters were delicious and a good value. The crab cake was breads and dry, however. Sub-par. But the side dishes were well done. Not an A+ experience, but still good.

This was a convenient (to Shaw-Howard metro stop) place to grab a bite on the way to a concert nearby. But wow, was it ever loud inside! The dining area is communal picnic-style wooden tables, so you definitely overhear the conversations from parties next to you. (Also, parties of two are directed to sit side-by-side -- which irked me at first until I realized I'd have never been able to carry on a conversation across the table.) Oysters and drinks were tasty, although I wish I'd come at the late-afternoon or late-night happy hours as that seems like a far better price for the raw bar items. If I try it again, it would be during happy hour, hopefully before or after the peak crowds and noise.

We were looking for a nice seafood restaurant, but this is more a bar with a few tables. Good for what it was, but it isn't a special-occasion destination, more of a nice place to stop in for a drink and a dozen oysters. We had a pretty good meal made up of appetizers, but I wouldn't suggest this as a place to go for a romantic dinner.

This is a great little neighborhood place. We went early on a Friday night and it was quiet, but I imagine it starts hopping later on. There are two lively bars in the store front and a room in the back with communal tables. The oysters are the stand-out--very fresh with delicious sauces for dipping. And they are a real bargain during happy hour at $12/dozen! It's a small menu but covers the bases. Nice drink menu. The service was attentive and super friendly without being overbearing. Will definitely go again.

Way too much $ for what we got... Line for bathrooms, average service, VERY casual atmosphere. The mac and cheese is a very small portion. Crab cake was good and a good size, but had a TON of dill (?!). Fried oysters were delicious. Raw oysters were also delicious but $4 each. Not recommended overall but maybe for a splurge.

We went here for an early dinner before a show at the Howard Theater. We enjoyed ourselves and the food we ate was pretty good, I just didn't think there was anything special about it and it wasn't great value for money. I think Derek Brown is supposed to be known for his cocktails, but I found the cocktail menu not all that interesting. The oysters were good, and I usually like beer with my oysters but I thought the beer menu was very limited - no hefeweizen/wheat beer options. The other food we had was the redneck laundry (caviar and potato chips) which was good, the "meat and foods half smoke" which was essentially a $17 hot dog with some potatoes, and the charred carrots, which again, was tasty, but was essentially just a well-cooked carrot (it was a side, and appeared to be equivalent to about one average sized carrot cut into a few pieces). So a weird review for me - I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere, but didn't feel like I got great value for the nearly $150 we spent. I love oysters and think it would be fun and much better value to come for oyster happy hour.

Long, shared tables are fun for groups, the food is served quickly, hot, and ready to devour. Offerings are limited but oysters are always a First and Plus for us. $3.00 an oyster=$36.00 for a dozen. Plates/portions are small but tasty. I would go again if we were in the neighborhood but not a destination restaurant.

This location seemed great for happy hour and late night happy hour. For dinner, the food and beer is over priced and not at the level of quality for the price/size of the dishes. Would only return for happy hour $1 oysters.

The menu at the restaurant was completely different from the menu at Open Table. It should also be noted that there are no private tables, only communal benches and the bar. It is not appropriate for a date or dining with a group of friends.

Warm & friendly environment. Communal dining tables lend themselves to a party-like atmosphere with new friends. Food was quite delicious. Fried oyster sandwich was amazing! Trout hash; wow! Prawn perfection! It's seafood, so it's a little costly, totally worth it. Bring extra $$ in case you want to try it all! Looking forward to going back! See you there!

The food was quite good and fairly priced, but the experience of the restaurant was unpleasant. The music (heavy metal played our entire visit) was bad and too loud. Service was friendly enough, but not stellar. Given other options, I don't think I would go back or recommend it to others.

Our party of three loved Eat the Rich. We went on the early side so it wasn't crowded. The parker house rolls live up to the hype and the bone marrow appetizer is something you can't get everywhere. Food and service were very good. This is not a fancy place, but it's a fun place with good food.

The food, drink and service are fantastic - BUT this is not a place to go if you are looking for ambiance. Cafeteria communal tables make for an intimate and very informal atmosphere. If you are OK with sitting in a dark backroom for dinner (and sharing a table with strangers) - it is worth it for delicious Parker House Rolls (believe all the hype) and fantastic oysters.

The bar staff were not the friendliest, in the early evening on a Friday I'd expect a slightly warmer welcome. The food was good but portions were quite small and for a restaurant that bills itself as a "tribute to Mid-Atlantic" cuisine the menu was pretty unimaginative and limited. The waitstaff were great and more than made up for the bar staff's grumbly demeanor. What we ordered (oysters, striped bass and chowder) was all good but nothing to write home about. I probably won't be back any time soon, there is more memorable seafood in DC. It's a shame because I feel like this place really has an opportunity to stand out and be known for Mid-Atlantic seafood, maybe the passion isn't there.

Met up with a friend for dinner, and it turns out you probably don't need reservations during the week, but sitting at the communal tables instead of the bar, worked out just fine. The oysters and crab claws were amazing and our server recommended other main dishes as well, like the Everything Flounder, that was very tasty. Eat the Rich is very gluten-free friendly which, as a celiac, I very much appreciated! Would love to go back with a small group to share a pitcher of cocktails and more oysters!

It was my husband's birthday and we were looking for a fun night out without the kids. The service was really outstanding and the food lived up to its reputation. We had the special -- Oysters Rockefeller which was great, as well as a dozen assorted oysters -- also really delicious! We tried the Jonah crab claws and the peel and eat shrimp as well. No complaints about any of it. The Parker House rolls lived up their billing and we ended the evening with the apple tart with cinnamon gelato -- wow! Fun night all around.
