The Whale Wins Cafe and Larder offers James Beard Award winning wood-fired fare and casual counter-style service all day, 9am to 9pm. We are focusing on safely meeting the needs of our Fremont and Wallingford neighbors with expanded dine-in, carry out, espresso, grocery and bottle shop offerings.

We are taking reservations for indoor dining and will take requests for limited patio seating. Please note, our patio is heated but not covered and our dining room is chilly with the windows open. In the event of inclement weather, we will call you to confirm or modify your reservation.

    Small menu, small portions but everything is excellent. I love it for a weekday brunch when we don't want a big heavy platter full of the usual breakfast foods. Just good quality, tasty smaller dishes. The patio is lovely. Service is great.

    They have now placed tables literally in their storefront, so you’re sitting in a grocery aisle. Not quite the ambience I was looking for. Otherwise a great meal, if somewhat overpriced.

    The Whale Wins checks my boxes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even a snack after work. I think they offer enough selections to meet your expectations. Its spacious, outdoor dining is offered. There is also a small area for shopping for gifts for yourself, friends or family

    We missed the Serrano ham like crazy, but the pate was a divine substitute. Everything was sublime except the salad which had too much vinaigrette and cheese. One of our favorite restaurants for all the good reasons.

    My friend and I had a lovely evening and an excellent meal. The food is always outstanding at Whale Winds and in fact what keeps us coming back to enjoy a nice evening out over the years of our friendship. The service is also always very good - polite, attentive and not too much. When we ordered dessert last night, we also asked for an espresso beverage - a natural pairing, right? Apparently, the espresso machine was not working or had been shut down for a cleaning. Then, we asked for drip and none available. We opted for tea but only after our dessert was served and we asked for it. Just a bit strange when we live in a coffee crazy town.

    A pleasant if not outstanding dinner. Wine choices were pricey but a bottle from Languedoc that was a special with the cassoulet eased the pain. Clams were excellent, squash appetizer not so much.

    The Whale Wins has been our go-to this winter with 3 milestone family birthday parties celebrated there. The staff went above and beyond for us, creating a warm and sophisticated dining experience. We have a 16 year old and a 21 year old and their birthdays were so special. Thank you Whale Wins!!!

    Very disappointing. Very small portions. We had to ask for more crostini for our pate. The last dish, the cassoulet, was completely dry as well as the duck confit. At this point we just wanted to go home and didn't complain. BTW, what is the purpose of noting a special occasion on the reservation? I had indicated that it was my birthday on the reservation and there was no mention of it when we were dining. We had a few other dishes that were good but extremely small. Overall we were very disappointed.

    The bacon tartine was very delicious, new for me to try. I’m a regular at The Whale Wins… you all should have frequent diner cards available for loyal customers, would love a free entrée once in a while

    enjoyed a late snack/lunch with my 80 year old parents--we shared the egg-bacon-cheese sandwich, an open-faced sardine toast with shaved fennel, followed by super delicious warmed zucchini bread! wonderful meal! then we shopped our assess off in the pantry/larder :)
