What Insiders Are Saying
Monsieur Benjamin is making French food cool again.
This place is so good. I love coming here and it has such an effortless elegance to it from their ambiance, interior, staff, and food.
My sister and I enjoyed a delicious meal at Monsieur Benjamin. The brunch menu is varied and the quality and preparation of the food are excellent. We enjoyed the leisurely pace of the restaurant, where we were able to order a few items at a time and to sample a variety of offerings. The tables are far enough apart to allow for a sense of privacy and the ambient noise level did not interfere with conversation. the wait staff was courteous and eager to oblige special requests. This is a wonderful restaurant for a special occasion, or for a stop at the bar before the theater.
Excellent cuisine coupled with outstanding customer service - a winning combination.
We loved our experience. Best little gem salad In the Bay Area , perfectly chilled and perfect balance of oil and vinegar
We also had the eggs deviled, a must for all
I had the steak tartare which I love and my partner had the flounder again perfectly cooked
Dessert of caramel ice cream to die for
We love this Monsieur Benjamin. A tad noisy but I standby my star rating
Great for before the symphony. Food is well prepared and presented. Awfully noisy though.
too loud. tables a bit too close together. Very crowded. Could not find the hostess on entry.
I have paid less money for better quality food. We ordered the sweetbreads which I thought were over cooked and a little too firm. The quail was under seasoned and so was my husband’s steak. The only great dish we had were the potato croquettes which came with an amazing dipping sauce. The waiter also seemed like he was really rushing us through the courses.
The last time I visited with my grand daughter it seemed that because I was with a 12 year old we were not worthy of the consideration given to other patrons. We were seated in the worst table for that time of day. I should have complained but I didn’t want to take away from this quality time with my grandchild.
Went for a pre-opera dinner with friends. Our waiter seemed a bit chilly at first - we wondered if that was a result of the 20% tip automatically included in every bill at this restaurant. If you know you'll be tipped, why go out of your way? He warmed up a bit as the meal went on, but I never felt like he cared all that much how our meal was going. Seemed like the table next to ours had a much more friendly waiter. We were jealous. I ordered the Ace cocktail, which was very good. For appetizers the table shared the smoked haddock remoulade - it was a little fishy, as were the chips. My husband ordered the poached shrimp courtbouillon, which was cold - not what he expected as he grew up in NOLA where this is a common dish. I had the butter lettuce salad which had a nice tarragon dressing, but the leaves were intact - so quite big, and filled the large bowl they came in. It looked pretty, but if you are not a fan of having to cut your salad before you eat it, skip this one. My husband had the fried chicken which he loved. My friend's hubby had the lobster bisque which he loved and the foie gras, which was a generous proportion and very good. I shared the steak frites with my friend and it was delicous - glad we split it as it was large. The frites came with a choron sauce that was really delicious. We asked a passing waitress what it was called and we tried to guess the ingredients. We said, eggs, tarragon, tomato . . . she said "surprisingly, no, there is no tomato". Google says "wrong!". It's a small restaurant with a fairly limited menu - every staff member should know all ingredients! Split the Palmier ice cream with Calvados caramel - it was really delicious. We were given a lovely little thimble of a desgestif at the end of the meal. Overall I would say that the meal was very good - but pricey for what we got. A lively and energetic space, but we were able to hear each other - but it was a Tuesday night so the weekends might be noisier!
Was quick, food was great! Service was great as well
Great dining experience and staff. Would definitely come back.
Fantastic !!! The restaurant was great. Service excellent. Food fantastic
It's great that M. Benjamin's dishes are not main stream. However, each dish I've had has been good, but just misses being great. For example, the gem lettuce with hot dressing is intriguing, but the sauce is just too sour and acidic.
Monsieur Benjamin has consistently creative and excellent food from appetizers through desserts. Portions are generous. One salad is plenty for two or three! They also have an interesting wine list featuring many French classics. A 20% gratuity is included with each check. A bit expensive but worth it.
Great before opera and symphony!
Our dinner was delicious! The best was escargot with mushrooms, but everything else was also top notch. Definitelyy will be back!
Excellent French food; well prepared. Pleasant attentive service. My only criticism is that it’s almost too authentically French restaurant cuisine, i.e. very few vegetables on the menu. Otherwise a good place for a special occasion.
Food and wine were overpriced. Food was good. Service was great.
Excellent! Will go again. Food and drinks were very tasty. The hierloom tomato salad was the best I have had so far.
Food is delicious, service is great but the prices are just insane - even for SF. Steak Frites, one beer + 20% tip and it’s $82 per person. I just can’t wrap my head around that when a few feet away is Chez Maman with the same Steak Frites for $24.
Excellent and very friendly service staff. Food was great and lives up to the reputation. Great neighborhood spot.
An enduring classic. We always enjoy our meal here. This time was no different, arctic char was moist and perfectly cooked and my husband loved his rabbit (even though hed been looking forward to the short ribs (they weren't on the menu at this time) we had a sincere rise which was awesome. My only complaint is that the by the bottle list is a bit pricey and not a large selection
Nice menu with options for all tastes. Heirloom tomato salad was outstanding, halibut was excellent, and the burger was very good. Service was attentive, but not intrusive, and very friendly and helpful. Vibe was highly energetic; nice crowd with some big groups and couples. We definitely will return on our next visit to SF.
We enjoyed the variety on the menu. My oysters were fresh and mild with tasty seasonings. Arctic char was done to perfection and rich with butter. Hamburger filled me up; fries were excellent. The cheese dessert was unusual, like fondue, and rather rich. The service was attentive, friendly and efficient. Overall, it was noisy and our seat by the window was too distracting to enjoy the meal and company. Next time, we should get a different table.
celebrated my birthday and it was over the top fantastic! From the oysters to the amazing butter leaf salad to my flounder entree, the entire meal was beyond outstanding!!!
Great service, well seasoned dishes!
Delicious and creative menu. Exceptional service. Energetic atmosphere. And very polite and welcoming despite the fact that we booked for the wrong night!!
We were welcomed as if we were old friends this visit as well as our first visit four dinners back. . All staff are delightful. Highly consistent in all realms. Beautifully designed space, with open kitchen, large glass windows on two walls to enjoy the city while sitting comfortably. My favorite place for pre symphony, opera, or a relaxing evening after a walkabout.
Overpriced food, with OK flavor. The service was average at best.
The food was great, nice ambiance. Quiet enough to sit and have a intimate dining experience with somebody. I enjoyed my meal and the service was decent. I felt that some items on the menu were overpriced for the amount of food that you’re actually getting. However, I understand this is an upscale French restaurant, so to be expected. I was a little uncomfortable with the automatic 20% tip that’s included in your bill. This is a very new and different concept for me, and personally, I enjoy matching the tip to the overall service that I experienced. Either way, I enjoyed the meal and would still recommend it to somebody who’s interested in eating authentic French food.
Usually love Monsieur Benjamin. However, the brunch menu doesn’t foster as much discovery and sharing than the usual offerings.
Solid but predictable french style food. Nothing too special, but convenient location and good atmosphere.
Had a wonderful lunch before Sun matinee Opera, it was perfect
Our first time here. We met a couple of friends for brunch to celebrate my wife's birthday. Wowsers!...2 1/2 leisurely hours later, we had enjoyed a wonderful assortment of exceptional dishes, from the shared seafood platter, pate and brioche and a few others. A truly memorable meal and experience.
First visit to Monsieur Benjamin. There were six of us with a 9:30 reservation for after concert dinner. Table was not ready until 10:00. Service was spotty at best considering we were sat so late. Noise level is very loud and conversation was difficult. Menu items were mostly good so they are doing some good work in the kitchen. Atmosphere is contemporary open kitchen but nothing inspiring about the design. Will not likely return.
Service was sub par and the food was too expensive for the lack of quality.
Thanks to our waiter - she made quick recommendations of small plates to share and it was delicious.
Well done and we were out within our timeframe (quick), we each had a glass of wine and then split the second glass - they were great about that idea.
Nice atmosphere but very disappointed by the cuisine the dishes are very expensive and have little flavor
Amazing food. Great space. Great service.
Kind of frenchie
Food executed the right way.
