*We enjoy our guests attending shows at the lovely DCPA theatre. We do recommend two hours for an enjoyable dining experience. Reservations are recommended to be made at 5:00PM for 7:30PM shows.*

Located within Denver’s historic Tramway Building, originally opened in 1911, The Nickel pays homage to the space that was once used to collect fare from customers riding its resident streetcars: a nickel. Just as the building in which The Nickel is housed has a storied past, the dishes found on the menu at The Nickel all have a story. We proudly serve menus that incorporate the highest quality ingredients from farmers, ranchers, distillers and craft producers, and is comprised of dishes that are easily recognizable and feel simple, but eat complex.

The menu was extremely limited (only three entrees). The server was very pleasant and efficient. The space is nice and it is convenient to the DCPA. We won’t be going back unless they develop a more extensive menu. Too bad, we have always enjoyed it in the past.

The menu was very limited. The Nickel has long been one of our favorites but not now. Only 3 mains, steak, hamburger and chicken plus a chef's special - good but very pricey.

The Nickel is close to the DCPA so a good choice for those going to a performance. But the menu is very limited, which makes repeat visits problematic. 3 entree's and a daily special, only 2 choices for dessert, one being ice cream, just 3 flavors. Good watermelon and capress salads/ 2 of us had the carpaccio which they liked. Three had the hamburger, which had too much stuff in it, excess of pickles and no taste of the sauce or cheese. I ordered mine medium, came well done. I had requested a quiet corner, which we had and that made it easy to talk. Our server did a good job. Cocktails were expensive, $16 I think!

Welcome to Nickel's "Season of Despair" menu. 3 entrees, 2 beef, one chicken. No fish or veggie choices. The server explained that they were short-staffed in the kitchen. Did that explain the cold potatoes served with both the very expensive tenderloin and the more reasonable short-rib burger entrees? With only 3 entrees, they can't even serve them hot. Nickel was such a nice place even last year. Now it's the last resort for pre-theater dining on Open Table. No tablecloths, 2 harried-looking servers. Inconsistent wine pours between our table and the one next to us. Some hotel manager-type kept walking through the restaurant looking the absolute picture of despair and sadness. I don't need to be depressed at dinner. We won't be back.

We had an early 5:00 pm dinner at the Nickel before a show at the Buell and were very pleasantly surprised. I had a house salad and the salmon special which was superb. My wife had a salad with chicken breast and she enjoyed it a lot. It was quiet and the service was good although I could see it could get slow if it was crowded due to limited staff. Highly recommended.

We have stayed several times at the Hotel Teatro and dined at The Nickel. Loved the food, cocktails and atmosphere. Today was a different experience. Friends of mine and I had Brunch reservations at 12pm. We were attending a show at the DCPA and figured this would allow us plenty of time for a leisurely brunch and then a short walk to the theater. We waited for an hour and a half to be served. I can see 45 mins when the kitchen is slow but this was ridiculous. The server was more than apologetic and even served us an extra Bloody Mary. We had about 15 mins to go to the theater. Luckily we can walk fast but no extra time for anything else. This is not sustainable for a restaurant. Clearly there was not enough help in the kitchen. Maybe taking less reservations so that the staff can handle the service in a more reasonable timeframe. I would not risk missing my show to dine at this restaurant again. Sad, because I love the atmosphere and food.

Such a perfect place to go before a show! We started at 5:00 for a 7:00 theater performance; the pace was leisurely, the service was spot on, the ambience was calm and lovely; and the food was quite good! The menu is limited, but that's good (no vegetarian entrees for example). Weird to put maraschino cherries on a charcuterie board, I'd say!? Watermelon salad was small, but the vinaigrette was tasty (and the added trout was perfect). My dinner campions all had the chicken, which, they said, reminded them of grandma's house - in a good way. We'll be back!

Service very slow, waited 45 minutes for our food to arrive, ordered two hamburgers, which shouldn’t take that long. Ordered hamburgers medium and they came back rare. Hostess and wait staff were friendly and pleasant.

Each time I have eaten at this restaurant, the menu has been slightly different which is a good thing. This last time all of the entrees were meat. As someone who doesn't eat meat, I asked our waiter if there were any other options, and he told us that they have plant-based burgers that we could get. And when asked if we could substitute a salad for the fries, he said they could. So the meal turned out to be healthy, satisfying, and delicious. I also like the convenience of the location when going to the theater. The Nickel is typically a solid choice for a restaurant if you are planning to get downtown early.

The ' paired down menu' is disappointing mess. Not even sure why this was the case as it was never explained. The old menu is still on OPEN TABLE and on the restaraunt site so very confusing indeed. Why not make this correction so as not to disappoint the diners ( which we were ). App choices very fee.No pasta. No fish beyond trout ( which was not even listed but suggested when we asked for salmon on a salad). The heirloom salad was joke: 3 pieces each of green tomato, cheese and a leaf of basil -so over priced that you could buy 3 lbs of them for what was charged. I would not return until a full menu is back as there is nothing exciting or value priced now.

For places to eat pre-theater, The Nickel has risen to the top for me. I like that it is quiet, close to the DCPA and the food is good. I had the trout and it was very good. The wait staff was attentive. The food took a good 45 minutes to be served, but luckily I had the time so did not mind the wait. All in all, it was a good experience and I will be back.
