Philadelphia magazine has honored Brauhaus Schmitz with three “Best of” titles in their annual “Best of Philly” issues. Open since 2009, the restaurant has revived the city’s love affair with its ethnic heritage and reintroduced a whole generation of Philadelphians to the foods of their forefathers.
To complement the much-lauded food at Brauhaus, Hager continues to grow its outstanding beer list. By cultivating close relationship with brewers during his visits to Germany, Hager procures 34 of his 34 taps from there, many of which he pours exclusively among the city, state and even the country. Most of his 100-bottle list is also imported from Germany.

Great little German spot on South Street. Unfortunately, due to COVID a lot of the visitors are required to be outdoors and essentially on the street (roped off of course). This puts you very close to the cars and motorcycles passing by, and its South Street so...you know what that means. This is not the fault of the restaurant, it's just the times we're living in. Overall, this is a nice spot to eat dinner and have a few beers. I highly recommend.

The food was amazing...loved the schweinshaxe meal!!!...beer is phenomenal...the service was great...the only drawback was the south street pedestrians who weren’t wearing masks.

The one drawback to the outdoor sidewalk seating is all of the background noise from vehicle traffic on South Street and the pedestrians walking by.

They're back in swing. Had the full wurst plate. The new chef Vanlentin Bay has exerted influence in the kitchen and come up with really great stuff. As always the tap list was marvelous. We were there on a friday, the service was a touch slow, but what do you expect. Eating on the sidewalk on South Street was a change of pace. Nice to watch the motorcycle/ATV parade of young men who really need girlfriends. But if you don't want hubbub and fizz, what are you doing in the city?

It was a 40th birthday and that was not even once acknowledged. Made reservations for the roof 2 weeks prior - but not acknowledged! Service was extremely slow, food was ok, and then 10min before the 2h are up we get a “you gotta go in 10min!” - mind you it took 30min to put our order in and at least another 30-40 to get the food. We did not have a chance to get desert or anything. So if service is so slow - maybe extend the seating time to 2.5-3h! And then 18% gratuity automatically included in the check - so we couldnt even tip according to service level - probably the reason why the service was so bad 🤷🏻‍♀️

Despite the noise with everyone cruising on the street, it was a great time. The service was outstanding (which I don't say very often), the food was very good, and they had a wonderful selection of beers on tap and bottle. I will definitely be back!

Food is always delicious and the rain stopped long enough for dinner. We were on the rooftop and had a great view. A little more light to eat by would have been nice but we love this place and are never disappointed.

Great beers, amazing food and beautiful spot. We sat on the roof deck, and there was an amazing view of the city. The service was exceptional, considering all the steps. Highly recommend the wurst platter.

The rooftop section is great! There's a great breeze. It's also quieter than the main floor outside dining. I highly recommend for I friends or a date.

Food and beer great as always! Service was great too. Only issue (not the restaurant’s fault) is that outdoor dining is right next to south street and at night (we went on a Friday) the noise from motorcycles and people blasting music is overwhelming. It’s not something anyone can control unfortunately.

As always, Brauhaus didn’t disappoint. We tried some new menu items, I cludjj in by the vegetarian spaetzle, and we LOVED the rooftop experience! So happy to be back after covid!

Very clean and followed all COVID-19 regulations. Tables were far apart. Great beer and food came out quickly. The cars on south street are a bit noisy, but that’s not the restaurant’s fault and it was not disruptive.

We have been to Brauhas many times over the years. German beer selection best in the city. Service always very good. Since the departure of the previous chef the menu has lacked substantial. The schnitzel i had this evening was burnt and was placed on top of my salad which ruined it, this shouldn't happen. Then other entree when and was the lamb sandwich even on fresh bread very nice. The pretzel, out of a box, sad. I hope menu and quality of food gets close to what it used to be.

Loved the roofdeck addition! Food at Brauhaus has never been cheap but it’s more of a beer spot ... The food has gotten so much better since it first opened!

We went for big birthday celebrations and asked well in advance for a table that’s away from the bar possibly upstairs. Part of our party arrived early and were placed right next to the bar. It was too late to change and I was not happen that our request was ignored. Service was decent. Food not so much. Cucumber salad was oozing with wat too much dressing. It looked like a soup. The potato leek soup was coagulated over cooked and was more of a bad dip than soup. Zigeuner chicken sauce was nothing authentic. On the positive side.... mushroom cream sauce was great, spatzl good but did not get many and beer was outstanding. Won’t be going back though😢

Had a wonderful experience at Brauhaus Schmitz on Saturday for my dads birthday. We were a large party and everyone enjoyed their meals. All the food was fresh and flavorful! Service was excellent. Very helpful and allowed us to sample different beers before committing to a liter. Can’t wait to go back!

It was not a great experience overall. Food wasn’t hot and the servers constantly kept reaching over me to remove items from my table. The food tasted good but the food was clearly made earlier in the day and not re-heated. My sisters dish was obviously just sitting under the salamander to warm hers up. I won’t be back for the food

The food was fantastic! Our server was great; he had plenty of beer recommendations ready for us! It was VERY noisy, thanks to the live accordionist and drummer, but the tradeoff was that we got to listen to some lovely polka renditions of popular songs (Country Roads, Sweet Caroline, and Achy Breachy heart, to name a few) as well as traditional German tunes. This was a great first time experience and I will definitely be back.
