Khmai Cambodian is a culinary journey that celebrates rich heritage and indomitable spirit of Cambodia. Named as an homage to Khmer, the native language, Mai means mother, which pays homage to Chef's mother.
Our restaurant is a testament to the enduring bond between family and food.

Khmai Cambodian is Inspired by the childhood experiences of our founder, Mona Sang, and her mother, Sarom Sieng, who survived the Cambodian genocide, our menu pays tribute to their unwavering resilience and passion for cooking. As a James Beard Semifinalist for Best New Restaurant in 2023, Khmai Cambodian has earned acclaim for its commitment to preserving and showcasing the culinary treasures of Cambodia.

Also enjoy our new concept Kaun Khmai, where the spirit of Cambodia comes alive through bold flavors and vibrant experiences. Translating to "Children of Cambodia," our lively and casual atmosphere invites you to explore the innovative fusion of traditional Khmer street food with a generational twist.

The food was excellent and the waiter explained all the dishes on the tasting menu. The atmosphere was unique and delightful. Our only complaint was we made the mistake of doing the wine pairing . The timing never matched up with the dishes. The first few dishes were rushed leaving us with a white wine going into the meat dish. Causing us to have both a glass of white and red at the same time. The dessert wine showed up after w finished our dessert. Go for the food , no wine tasting, ask not to rush the dishes

Been going to Khmai since their first week on Howard street; it's always been great but it feels like the food continues to evolve into an even more focused direction that pays clear homage to Cambodia. Can't wait to go back.

Great experience, the staff is very well trained and versed in the Khmer language. The food was nice and potent, just as authentic as it can be. Wonderful flavors. Chef Mona was awesome to meet. Very humble and is bringing every aspect of Cambodia to the table. We’re going back for brunch! Edit: We went back for brunch and with a special request, Chef Mona and her mom made us Somlar Machu Sach Ko off the menu. Amazing!

Outstanding food, different than other Asian restaurants. Reasonable costs in today’s times. Service pleasant and helpful. Ate at the “ casual” side of the restaurant and it was noisy.

The service was warm, friendly and charming. Our waiter was extremely accommodating. The dishes were good and especially liked the salads. I had ordered the tasting menu but not every dish was to my liking. I will return but go ala carte next time.
