This restaurant is an institution in Oslo. It has been there around a century and feels like the perfect movie set for a picture circa 1899. It was a nice way to kick off our Norway trip.

The food is very good, like a good French bistro although it is very expensive (like much of Oslo). The cheese and charcuterie platter (at ($25) is enough to feed you as a meal. By the time we finished the the apps and steak tartare no one was hungry for a main so do not order all at once. The atmosphere is relaxed so drink and take you time and avoid ordering too much. My only less than ideal experience of the evening is the waiter (hasse) insisting everyone try the local Aquavit. Which I did not like and yet we were all charged $15 a glass whether we drank it or not. I mentioned that i did not like it and he did not take it off the bill. It left an unfortunate taste in my mouth (figuratively and literally) and so do not take staff recommendations because even if you do not like it, or eat/drink it, you will still pay for it. Order what you like and want and not what they are pushing you to order.

We found the menu inventive and many food combinations exciting and different. Pricing was reasonable for Norway and considering the food quality. A lively ambience with a good mix of diners, both business people and local as well as a few tourists. A chef who clearly understands fresh food and creative seasoning. A true winner.

I had duck confit, which I liked a lot. My wife had the risotto, which she didn’t enjoy, or eat much of, because they poured a lot of olive oil on top. Maybe this is risotto to someone, but I’ve never seen it prepared that way. Drinks were all good.

It was our first dinner in Oslo and Theatercafèen proved to be perfect. The restaurant’s atmosphere was very chic and classy. The service was impeccable. We had salmon tarts, fish soup, oysters and steak tartare.Everything was delicious. We will definitely come back.

It is a wonderful place, the setting takes us back to the times of the "Belle Epoque" the food is excellent and the service very professional and pleasant. I highly recommend it. Remember to book.
