Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.

Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

Start to finish, the experience to learn about Cambodian cuisine at Mawn was a smooth, delicious, hospitable journey. We were seated promptly. This is a BYOB. Make a plan if that’s important to you. Server Emmanuel deftly told us the story behind several menu items, then directed us to dishes we thoroughly enjoyed. We received a dish compliments of the kitchen, which was Instagram-worthy and appreciated. Service was attentive yet unobtrusive. Staff worked together to provide a seamless, enjoyable experience that I hope to repeat very soon. Menu suggestions: grilled saht koh (marinated beef on a stick), banh chow salad (chicken and shrimp crepe), fried chicken, tahini noodles, and (very spicy) yellow curry noodle soup. Pro tip: work hard to leave room for dessert; the jasmine rice pudding is a show-stopper. Thank you to Phila and Rachel for the lovely opportunity to learn about the community that comes together to enjoy Cambodian food and hospitality.

Every single thing we ordered was divine. Particularly favorites were the melon salad, scallop crudo, rib eye skewers, and garlicky cabbage. You can’t do wrong with anything on the menu.

Lives up to the hype 1000%. Seriously just the nicest most engaging service team (even the email responses from the owners are just the kindest and blow the communication from other top restaurants out of the water. The flavours, variety, and overall meal is just insane. Can’t wait to come back. We did the Puck and See.

This is easily THE best restaurant in Philly. The reservation queue craziness on the first of the month is well worth it if you get a reso. It is so delicious! You can definitely dine on a budget here too- the portions are huge and you can share everything- although you won’t want to. There is no way to describe the sauces! The clams are incredible and ask for white rice to soak it all up in! The chef deserves all the awards and looks badass behind the counter. Worth the wait and the hype is real!
