About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Hot spot
  • Good for special occasions
Akahoshi Ramen is a humble ramen shop in the city of Chicago. Everything is made in the restaurant, including all soups, seasonings, toppings, and noodles.

We are not an authentic ramen shop, though we value the history of ramen, and our ramen is influenced by its past and its future potential. The dish, popularized in Japan after World War 2, is symbolic of both struggle and perseverance. It is both a simple dish, and a fantastically complex one that we treat with reverence and respect.

Roughly translating to “Red Star,” the name “Akahoshi” is a love letter to two cities; Sapporo, Hokkaido, where red stars adorn city monuments, and Chicago, Illinois, where the red star decorates the city flag. Our ramen is influenced by Japanese and American ideals in cooking.

We hope you will join us to enjoy a bowl of ramen, made with the respect and passion it deserves.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: One of Bon Appétit's 2024 best new restaurants in America, this Logan Square spot is the brainchild of Mike Satinover, better known as "Ramen Lord" to the fan base he built up over a decade posting about ramen on Reddit. Get comfortable at one of the spacious booths, or watch the action at the counter overlooking the kitchen, and choose from four different ramens like the Akahoshi Miso, with pork chashu and bamboo shoots. Each bowl is made with incredible attention to detail, showcasing just how nuanced ramen can be.

Ordered the Miso Ramen and the Ikura Bowl and a yuzu highball. On the ramen: The noodles were appropriate. The chasu was tender, but the portion was small. The egg cost extra and was too salty. The broth had the right amount of oil content, but the miso tasted muddy and flat. On the Ikura: It was simply overly fishy. The rice could also benefit from seasoning. Yuzu Highball: no notes.

We loved Ahakoshi for its unique flavors and unpretentious ambiance. This is a great spot for a kitchen facing bar seat, but they do have comfy booths for reservation and a handsome common table for walk-ins. The menu is petite and selective with a monthly special which keeps the options fresh. Cocktails had a nod in flavor to the Japanese favorites--sakura, and some spices that are not in every bar. Clientele was a good mix of hipster 30 year olds, younger girlfriend groups and dad out with a kiddo, early on a Thursday. Overall, very sought after reservation but we like to eat early so ok with us older types. Highly recommend these incredible curated samplings of ramen but caution for its inclusion in the newly published reviews of "Chicago's top 50 Best Restaurants." Oh, and we parked for free a short block away on Fullerton, for a driver pro tip. Great night!

Akahoshi Ramen gets a 10/10 from me, The broth is rich and full of depth, and the homemade noodles were seriously on point. Cozy spot, big flavor.

As the description says its not super authentic, but its the best ramen I’ve had in Chicago. I regularly travel to Japan, and its certainly not on that level, but this is the highest quality ramen I’ve found in Chicago. Will be my go-to when here. Also, wish they had tonkotsu.

Haven't had everything on the menu, but it's the best ramen in the city. Owner knows ball. Big fan of their seasonal tsukemen.

I'm surprised this restaurant is getting so much hype. The pork was cold on top of a flavorless broth. Thank goodness I ordered the egg; otherwise, there would have been no flavor. The homemade noodles do not make up for the lack of taste and other ingredients in their "signature" ramen. There are so many great Ramen places in Chicago. I wouldn't waste my time on this overhyped spot.
