A 16-foot Buddha, which floats above a reflecting pool filled with Japanese carp, presides over the scene at Tao. A favorite destination for celebrities and athletes, this Pan Asian restaurant specializes in authentic Hong Kong Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisines. Tao has three levels of dining including the prized "Skybox" which offers views of this former movie theater unparalleled in New York. In addition to its 300 seats, Tao includes a sushi bar, lounge and two bars at which to enjoy the food and the show. Appetizers range from $8 - $18; Entrees: $16 -$39.     It was dark, dated, the food was bad and it was expensive. We all agreed we could get the same quality Chinese food at our local (NYC) hole in the wall chinese for 1/5th the price. We were hoping for something elevated. Crispy chicken not crispy. Sauce gloppy and too sweet. Hardly any meat in the pirk lo mein. Shrimp dumplings had a paste inside of maybe shrimp. Kind of angry that i took out of town guests to this place basically bc it was convenient. I ate here many years ago and it was good. Not anymore.

    We went with our tennis friends 5 of us and we took advantage of the 29.99 price fix lunch which was really have good portions, delicious and good ambiance.

    This is the 5th time I visited TAO. The food was mediocre at best. My dish was one of the specials and frankly it tasted like something you can get from the freezer section of your supermarket. Our waitress was good so that helped. Very unlikely I will return.

    I’m not sure I will return to Tao again! The food was very good although the chicken dishes are all super sweet. I asked the server which chicken dishes I should order if I wanted something less sweet and he recommended the Kung Pao dish (super sweet). My biggest issue was with the drink I ordered. I believe it was priced at $18. When I took the first sip, it tasted watery and as though it had no liquor. I told the waiter that it was weak on alcohol and asked for more tequila (the primary liquor). He did so. When I got my check, I realized that he had served me a 2oz shot of Casamigos and charged me $21 making the total cost of a pretty crappy cocktail almost $40! I caught it, spoke to the manager and he removed the charge of $21 although should have offered to remove the entire cocktail. Anyway, the service was fairly substandard. We were asked if we wanted to order dessert before our entrees were served because the kitchen was closing! One final thing, on arrival, the restaurant was not busy (we were the last reservation slot of the night). We were greeted by an unfriendly host who asked us to take a seat and we would be seated shortly. We waited about 7 minutes after our reservation before being seated I’ll leave it at that. I’d think twice before booking Tao for a special occasion. There are plenty of other and better pan Asian restaurants. Very disappointing!

    We had a good experience overall. It was very busy when we arrived for our reso which resulted in us waiting in the lounge for 15 min before our table was ready. We would’ve been happy to have a drink while we waited but no one came to see us in the lounge. I think they were understaffed? Once we sat down, it took another 10 min for the server to come and take our order. For the price, I would expect more from the service. Our server was great once he arrived to our table and was attentive throughout our time there. The food was excellent. The room probably needs an cosmetic update. It was fun restaurant and certainly lively.
