We were a group of 9 and had an amazing time at The Sorrow Drowner. We ordered multiple rounds of drinks and food. All were delicious and arrived in quickly. The ambiance of The Sorrow Drowner is amazing. So much thought has been put into the decoration and every spot has something interesting to look at. The cocktails and the glasses they came in also added to to whole experience! Go here!

Beautiful interior decor. Make sure to take a tour (guided or self guided!) around the place to see all the hidden artifacts! If you need a small escape from the everyday this is the place. The food was all delicious and the drinks were gorgeous and went down easy. Bring your spirit of adventure and some good company, put your cell phone down, and enjoy the experience! Our waitress was super sweet. We even asked to move to a booth because it seemed a bit more private and we could view the amazing room better and she happily obliged.

As a tiki aficionado, I can't stress enough how impressed I was with The Sorrow Drowner. This place takes authentic tiki adventure club to the next level. It was almost more a museum than a bar. The cocktails were delicious and true to craft cocktail tiki style (and though the prices were spot on with what I've experienced at quality tiki bars around the country). The owner, Alfred, took some time to chat about his inspiration and backstory of The Sorrow Drowner's creation. You can tell how passionate they are about what they have created. Our server made some excellent recommendations for both drinks and food. The ambience was incredible. Ten out of ten, could not recommend more.

Wow! I mean… wow! Just an unbelievable space. This is the kind of bar you might expect in a place like New York or Vegas (and even there it would be something special!) but for it to be tucked away in this unassuming yellow building in Wilmington, words cannot… Fantastic (and strong!) tiki drinks, they juice fresh and make their own syrups. Pupu platter was fun, if not the healthiest food in the world but damn was it tasty! This is on par with any of the world class tiki bars out in California, it’s definitely worth a visit or five. I found my new watering hole!!

Set up a reservation through their web page for 7 pm. Drove over an hour to get there an the place was closed. 😡

The Sorrow DrownerResponded on October 13, 2022Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your experience! You should not have been able to make a reservation on Sunday as we had disabled the reservation system a week prior as we plan on discontinuing our use of the platform due to instances such as this. While we did also announce on all social media that we would be closed, the fact is that you were able to make a reservation and you shouldn't have to do homework to visit. Please call, your next visit in on us!

Places like this are so rare. As soon as we heard they were open, we made the 2.5 hour trip down to Wilmington to check it out. Cool place! Not just a tiki and grass skirt to call it a Tiki Bar. It is a full fledged adventure. Great drinks. The menu is limited but what we ordered was really good. We talked with the owner a while. Everyone there was friendly. Great night out. I'm sure we'll be back. We've been to Tiki restaurants in CA and throughout the South Pacific. Glad to see one here in NC!

The Sorrow DrownerResponded on October 13, 2022Thank you so much for visiting, we truly do appreciate the review. We hope that as time goes by that people from this area will come to love what we have built as much as we have! Being huge Tiki Bar fanatics ourselves, we really did try to incorporate what makes all of the bars on the West Coast so special and bring that magic here! Can't wait to have you visit again!

Disappointed after seeing all the great reviews. Was really hoping for more all around. Setting has great potential. Drinks were just okay (tried 4 different ones among the 3 of us). We did not order food.

The Sorrow DrownerResponded on October 4, 2022Thank you for coming in and visiting! Our drinks are made with fresh pressed juices, house made syrups, and a curated collection of spirits then crafted using our best approximation of the original recipes from bartending greats such as Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic. We know that isn't for everyone, but we pride ourselves in having the most authentic cocktail experience in the Carolinas. You might consider checking the calendar on our website for special events in the future!

The atmosphere is fantastic and a very cool place to see. Very sad that there aren’t shows very often anymore as that would have made our experience much better. The snacks were good and drinks weren’t bad, but very pricey for what you get. I made one of my drinks a bowl, which says upgrade for $30. My fault for not realizing (until I got the check) that that meant pay an additional $30 on top of the regular price of the drink. So I paid $47 for a drink that wasn’t the biggest or the strongest, and I didn’t even get to keep the cup. It was on the slower side so not the night we were hoping for, but besides prices was still fun to experience one time. Our waiter was nice, but there were a few mess ups once he had a couple extra tables. The staff was dressed in character but I didn’t feel like there was much of a performance going on. So without a show it was kind of just an expensive bar with cool decor. Would recommend as a one time thing, but make sure you’re weary of prices.

The Sorrow DrownerResponded on October 4, 2022Thank you for coming in and visiting the Lemurian Institute! The variety show is a point of much contention and unfortunately, due to the location of our establishment, did not meet our exacting standards for high quality entertainment. It is very much our intention to stay as on theme as possible and to continue that, we are in the midst of hiring a house band that can perform every weekend.

We went to the 10pm show on a Saturday night. While the idea is a great one, and it was fun with the servers in character and costume, most of our experience at the sorrow drowner felt like an R-rated high school theater production. In addition, we were seated on the second level. It definitely would’ve been a better experience if we had been able to sit on the first level, but we were running 15 minutes late for our reservation. The seating downstairs looked like it would’ve been more comfortable. I will say, I had a Pimms Cup as my drink, and it was tasty! The decor was also pretty cool and elaborate. Maybe more of a fun place to grab a few drinks, rather than to see a show. On the plus side, we didn’t have to pay an entertainment fee as mentioned in another review. All in all, would return.

Great tiki drinks. Great entertainment. Great ambience. The food(non-vegan popular plater) was also very good. The service was a struggle at times. Part of that is the nature of the establishment, part of it was our particular server. Either way, it was still worth the trip, and I will be back.

Really enjoyed the theme of it all. Food selections are very minimal, but tasty! Please note the light yellow sauce that comes with the pu pu platter is horseradish and not honey mustard. (Learned that the hard way!). The show was entertaining but at times slightly awkward, especially with the transition between acts. The drinks differ greatly between bar tenders. There is a $5 per person entertainment fee added to your bill that I don’t recall seeing listed anywhere beforehand. All in all, go! I have already made my next reservation. Also, Contessa was our server and AMAZING. Probably was my favorite character and if I could request her as a server again I would!

Excellent concept and with some minor tweaks it would be simply amazing. Food was cold and heat on pupu platter didn't last long enough to heat it. Cold bbq buns are not good! Drinks were pricey but Excellent and for those complaining it covers the cost of the show so no problem there. Comedian was horrible... everyone else was good to great. More interaction with the cast would be good. Maybe even a murder mystery night. The cast of actors/wait staff with better material could be a focus and a draw for patrons, they are a talented group with great comedic presence. The venue itself is a true gem and done so well it transports you back to an Era gone by.

The immersive experience was amazing! The set design is a visual treat. Everyone was in character from the host to the servers for the entire evening and very engaging. The acts on stage were creative. Definitely 21+. Food and drinks were delicious. Pricey, but if you factor in the entire evening was entertainment, it is worth it!

Good food and drinks! Fun for a date night or with friends. Only slight drawback was that I made a reservation for specifically NOT bar seating and still got sat at the bar. There was a no show so we were able to move to a table and all was well. I’m vertically challenged so my legs just dangle from stools and it’s very uncomfortable. Otherwise it was great an we’ll definitely go again:)

Very fun experience that I highly recommend to anyone! We almost decided to leave before the final few acts and the last one was easily the best. The food and drinks were more expensive than we expected, but I assume that is because it helps compensate the entertainers. We didn't know what to expect and going inside doesn't give much away. It's fun without requiring you to actively be a part. They seem to encourage audience participation without expecting it. There is a tip jar by the stage but it is unclear how that gets split and it was easier to just assume our 25% tip on the check would be enough for everything.
