About this restaurant

The Merchant is a big space that served for more than a century as a leather store. We've brought in high-top tables near the windows ... a 40-foot bar on one side of the room … and more formal dining spots on the opposite side. We have a private dining room in back, and another private dining room downstairs. For our menu, we make almost all of our fare from scratch. Executive chef Ignacio Lopez previously worked at both Beat Hotel in Cambridge and Tuscan Kitchen in Burlington. Chef Lopez cures and smokes all the meat in house. Our burger is top-notch, as are other dishes like house-made Gnochhi, Organic Chicken Milanaise and Steak Frites. The Merchant serves salads, sandwiches ($15-$21), and more for the lunch rush. And for dinner, we are a full-service brasserie (with most entrees ranging from $25-$30). The bar has 30+ rotating beers on tap, many of them locally brewed, plus a full selection of craft cocktails to serve our patrons, including the after-work crowd.

    We heard the food is really good at this restaurant and always wanted to try it. After the graduation weekend, we came here for lunch with family. Everyone loved the food here and the service was amazing. Highly recommend!

    Once again The Merchant excels! Our server Elizabeth is especially great - she has had our table several times before and she is always terrific. She remembers us and what we like and we barely have to say anything she just knows what to do. My burger was superb! So was the red ale. And my wife's street corn and chicken wings appetizers were fantastic together. And dessert... the icing on the cake! Well - not cake, but cobbler, and ice cream. One of our favorite haunts! We will be back (repeatedly).

    We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Merchant. Our server was attentive, patient and friendly. The food was very good - our favorite was the cauliflower with Korean BBQ sauce.

    The Merchant is very reliable, has a terrific menu with many options, and is very conveniently located right in Downtown Crossing. But best of all is the service: we have favorite servers but all the servers are terrific, the bartender knows what they're doing, and the restaurant, even when very busy, seems efficiently focused on their customers. Our favorite servers - Elizabeth, and Eric - are both superb. They remember us and our preferences from one visit to the next, and treat us like family. This was our friends' first visit, but they enjoyed it a lot and it won't be their last! We have never had a bad meal here - always very delicious and satisfying. For an any-time go-to place, add The Merchant to your list.

    Great atmosphere and enjoyed the dim lighting in the restaurant. The server was great and friendly. She provided helpful recommendations for dinner and dessert. Enjoyed the evening with friends!
