By far the worst omakase experience I had. This is basically a nigiri sampler, 10$ per piece.

While the atmosphere and decor were great, the food was nothing special. We don’t plan to go back. The highlight was their selection of Japanese whiskeys. Superb. Great for a drink but a very limited menu.

Menu is not extensive, but some great options. Food is high quality and unique options. Void of the lamb gyoza being a bit gamey, everything else was delicious. Waygu sliders were amazing. Nigiri rolls a tad on the small size, but very flavorful. Buttered mushrooms very good also.

Exceptional. It is quite expensive so more of a special occasion place, but this is best sushi place in Chicago in my opinion. My third time there and it always delivers. Thanks!!!

As a out of town visitor, the choice of the restaurant was solely based on availability of time. Being unfamiliar with this city, it was looking “sketchy” as our Uber pulled into what looked like an industrial park that was DARK. The only reason we got out, we saw signs of life through narrow windows. The “side” entrance didn’t make it clear how to get into the place. Nonetheless we made it inside to discover what looked like a happening spot. We weren’t there to chill, we went there to eat. The extremely limited menu made it difficult to make decisions especially when the offerings were single items. Meaning for a sushi restaurant, the sashimi was priced for ONE PIECE ONLY. There were no options for multiples other than ordering more. The food was good BUT nothing to make a lasting impression. This place is basically a tapas joint that serves sushi. Nice but not enough for a return visit.

Everything was great! I’ve never heard about this place before and that I was surprised they’ve been opened for a couple of year! The decor and ambience was really nice which perfect for a date night I think. Food and drinks menu was kinda small. For 2 people I recommend 2-3 dishes to share. Also I noticed that they also have an Omakase as well. I’ll be back to try it!

I love the vibe of the restaurant. The appetizers were decent and so was the noodle. However, the maki rolls were disappointing. The rice was very dry and not a lot of taste to it. The sweet potato maki was just sweet potato and unagi sauce. There was not a lot of dishes on the menu if you are expecting a full list of sushi. The service was excellent. Overall, if you are looking for a new place to try, this might be the place. If you are here for sushi, I would recommend finding another restaurant to try instead.

This place is perfect across the board. The ambience, the service, the decor, the FOOD!, and the prices are almost too good to be true. The menu is exactly what a typical guest is looking for, not overly cluttered with random components, honoring traditional Japanese fair with just enough creativity that brings it into a modern day experience. Will definitely return.

Terrific ambiance considering we were the only ones at 6.30pm. Nice decor. Friendly attentive staff. Nice cocktails. Great starter courses, cucumber’s and mushrooms especially. Wagyu sliders were great too. Only 4 choices of true Sashimi fish, all of which were excellent but you wish there were more, after all a sushi restaurant. Perhaps the Omekazi service will be better but they do only one Omekazi serving a day, at 7pm , something not clearly advertised. Excellent choice of restaurant, in a hideaway location!

I wanted to like this place. The entire experience was odd. The staff is unexperienced servers who are trying their best but come off as over-trying and way too many touch points to the table. The fish is terrible. The non-fish items are much better than the fish. The ambiance is NOTHING like what is shown on their website; the complete opposite actually. The website seems as though this place is the hippest newest spot. It's not. Unfortunately, trust the 1 star reviews on here and choose somewhere else to go.

Site reservation page is unclear that omikase is available exclusively after 7 and only at 7:15-7:30 pm. Otherwise there is a bar menu that prevails. I was disappointed that sushi on the bar menu is limited. After making clear I was present to have sushi I was advised of the limitations. After we ate from the bar menu, I was advised that I could choose certain sushi’s from the omikase menu. I was full and too late. Life is sufficiently complicated already and Hinoki might adopt a clearer reservation communication so diners can know what to expect. Bar food I had was good but quite salty.

I have never written a bad review but oh man, this was an unfortunate dinner. We arrived and the staff was visibly stressed and anxious. The restaurant was full but not out of the ordinary to warrant this vibe (one of our party saw a waiter throw chopsticks angrily to the floor while walking to the bathroom). They were out of avocado, spicy crab, spicy tuna, and wasabi (???) which severely limited their already small menu. We ended up having to bring out own drinks that had been sitting ready at the bar back to our table ourselves and the service was generally very slow. The food arrived haphazardly and to the wrong people. It was truly just shockingly bad. The manager was very nice about it, sent out some freebies, but it was definitely a bad place to spend a birthday dinner

I've been to sushi restaurants all around the world. I've had good sushi, I've had cheap sushi, and I've loved both. I did not have a good experience, and couldn't even complain because our waiter was never at our table! We ended up accidentally going during restaurant week, and the deal didn't look too enticing to us so we opted for the regular menu. The lamb gyoza were good, but the other appetizers were all quite average (green beans, shishito peppers). Chirashi bowl was an excuse for reusing leftover cuts marinated nicely, but poorly done. Plenty of restaurants have good ways of reusing fish that don't include ruining a standard entree. Spicy Soft Shell Crab was the only good Maki we had, but even then it was only on par with other restaurants. Only redeeming sushi was the Tako nigiri, but at $12 a piece I'd go elsewhere. I didn't take photos of the food as I usually do as their lighting was so poor that it was nearly pitch black and was too dark for even my fancy low light camera. I'm down for an intimate romantic experience but we were in the middle of a large room with a bar, just simply in between lights in the dark. Will not return Do not recommend

This is the hidden gem of Chicago! Great ambiance, outstanding service and amazing food! The lamb gyoza with miso-ginger sauce are out of this world, and the best chicken karaage I have ever tasted. The drinks at the bar pay homage to their Japanese inspiration, the Ume fashioned takes the old fashioned to the next level!

We have been to the izakaya downstairs several times, and it keeps getting better. Standout small plates (which come with happy hour pricing till 7PM!) are the soy marinated cucumbers, nasu dengaku (Japanese eggplant), sesame green beans, lamb confit gyoza, and (really outstanding) chicken karage with truffle dijonnaise sauce. A great new dish is essentially pasta with clams but the sauce is butter, sake and soy sauce, so a long way from Italy. Rolls are great, and you can often get a piece of sushi from the omakase meal upstairs. Service is friendly and relaxed, and manager Zak makes everyone feel welcome! It's in a non-descript warehouse neighborhood along the Elston Corridor (soon to revive with Lincoln Yards), but quite warm and comfortable inside. Great sake menu (and Zak is a sake expert); my only request would be to expand the two red wines on the menu to include some lower priced options. A nice Rhone blend or Rioja, maybe? Overall a great experience!

Food was okay, nothing special and menu is very limited. The reason I’m giving 1 star is for service. We ordered a salad, apps, and sushi and it all came out at the same time, barely fitting on the table. When we finished eating we waited for our check for 20-30 mins, then had to ask for our check twice and wait another 20 minutes to get it. People were waiting for our table. Staff just didn’t have their system down. Came here for a special celebration and I would not recommend this place for a special night out. A frustrating experience and food was only ok. Location is also not great for transit.
