Our Story The goal – to guarantee a wonderful meal with authentic cuisine and fabulous margaritas, serve over 50 artisanal and ancestral mezcals, and over 100 different types of tequila brands in a vibrant unique atmosphere that boasts excellent service. Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine opened in Astoria in 2021 with such a wonderful and successful home run that a second location opened in Patchogue in March 2022. Ruta Oaxaca means “Road to Oaxaca,” a historic state in the southern part of Mexico. Mr. Castillo and his Partners are keenly focused on honoring Oaxacan culinary traditions, whose fame is derived in great part from its many varieties of moles. By legend, these ancient recipes are more than sauces, they are the very focus of the meal. Ruta Oaxaca proudly features four moles, each prepared using the Oaxacan mole recipes that have made the cuisine world famous. Quality of food has gone down. When Ruta first opened, the food and service were elevated. Since they’ve opened up other locations, seems they standardized food to be just like any other Mexican place. Eh. Won’t go back.

I love the food and drink here. Their pescado dish is hard to beat if you’re looking for a healthy, flavorful dish option and all their other menu items have not disappointed either. The Órale cocktail is also hard to beat. My only negative here is that it’s often quite loud, and the wait for drinks can occasionally be long. As long as you’re not in a rush, you’ll have a good time and great food.

I had the Oaxaca chicken and it was excellent. The chicken was tender and the accompanying beans and eggplant in the mole sauce was sublime. The mole was complex with a little bit of heat which I loved. I scraped the left over mole up with tortilla chips. The service was in point. They are friendly and efficient, but never make you feel rushed.

Food is ok. Ceviche is spicy, but I’m used to non-spicy ones.. Tacos are good, but nothing special. Margaritas are great. Service was ok, but rushed.
