Sel et Poivre Restaurant

French
For thirty years Sel et Poivre has served classic French bistro fare at their location on the Upper East Side. Situated on Lexington Avenue between 64th and 65th Streets, they are open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and feature a prix fixe brunch menu on the weekend.

The menus are elegant, yet not overdone. Appetizers include terrine de foie gras with red wine grapes, mussels marinière or à la provençale with French fries, and of course, an exceptional French onion soup that should not be missed. Dinner entrées include classic French items such as frog's legs in Pernod sauce and duck à l’orange with wild rice, plus items such as pan-seared chicken breast served with wild mushroom sauce and mixed vegetables, a bistro burger with French fries, and thin-sliced steak frites and salad. Of course if you're ready to indulge, they also feature a filet mignon in a red wine shallot sauce with roasted Yukon Gold potatoes and an aged New York sirloin steak with Roquefort or poivre sauce.

The food and service are very good but the price for a glass of wine is very overpriced at $17.00 need to reduce that down to nmt $12.00.

Sel et Poivre RestaurantResponded on September 17, 2022Dear Peter G; Thank you for your review ; We are happy you enjoyed your meal and service. To operate a restaurant these days has tripled in overhead! The price of wine ,delivery has jacked on unexpected new taxes. We like to serve good quality wine. We checked out all our neighborhood restaurants and beyond and that is also there avarage cost of a glass of wine. . Prices are subject to change on all products .hopefully inflation will end soon. thank you Se et Poivre

Sel et Poivre is a Manhattan culinary institution whose menu is exquisite. For those trendy diners who believe paying more reflects higher quality food, you are misinformed and missing a gem. Last December, my wife called a fashionable restaurant on Madison Ave - 2 blocks from Sel et Poivre - to ask what they would charge per person for a ladies lunch of 16-18 people. "We can do a prix fixe of $80 per person plus wine." I was charged with contacting the proprietor, Christian, at Sel et Poivre and asking the same question. "Our prix fixe for 3 courses for lunch is $29.95". End of discussion. The food bill was $400. The wine tab was $700. The menu contains many classical French dishes. The hors d'oeuvres are delicious and the profiteroles are my favorite - along with the apricot crepe. Book now.

A great restaurant if you're on the East side of the city. Very old-fashioned French -- and I mean that as a good thing! Extensive appetizer list; good variety of entrees, though I wish there were more French classics offered, like a Croque Monsieur, for example. (To be fair, there is a special classic French entrée every night; the night I was there, it was sweetbreads, which didn't appeal to me. Wish I had gone on a Coq au Vin night, or a Pot au Feu night.) It's a very busy restaurant, but the service is super-efficient and the waiters are very attentive. This is my go-to restaurant for an event from East 42 to East 86 St.

Dis French restaurant on the upper Eastside has so much genuine atmosphere that it’s worth the visit. My duck a’la Orange was absolutely splendid. The wait staff was attentive and very engaging. The only caveat I would give to the restaurant is that the restrooms are downstairs…..

We always enjoy Sel et Poivre for its ambiance of quiet which makes conversation a delight. Service is always attentive and gracious without hovering. The food is uneven. Of our party of 5, we had 3 likes and 2 unhappy. We always know that a visit here will be a bit of a trip back to an older New York and it’s worth it!

Sel et Poivre is NYC's most authentic French bistro. Having just returned from Provence, where food and rosé define the area, dining at this restaurant last night brought back memories of our holiday there. The stuffed quail is unique to Sel et Poivre. My wife's cold salmon was superb, and the crispy soft shell crabs atop green beans was exquisite, said our friend. The staff is incomparable and if your are sufficiently fortunate to meet Christian, the owner, you will go back many times.

During the period prior to the "pandemic", when we traveled the world extensively, teaching seminars, we did have occasion, at one point, to dine at Sel et Poivre, a neighborhood spot, and thought it was very good. However, our meal, on this particular occasion, while celebrating our 30th anniversary, was nothing less than superb, simply top-of-the-line French bistro fare. I began with excellent escargot, and my partner had a lovely homemade fennel soup; delicious! Portion sizes of the entrees were very generous, which was most welcome. She has a garlic allergy, and enjoyed a beautiful brook trout amandine with carrots. My pan seared pork chop, with roasted potatoes, green beans and Calvados sauce, was terrific -- perfectly prepared, and sufficiently ample that I took some home!! Desserts -- Tarte tatin and creme brulee, were equally scrumptious, as well as a glass of an Oregon pinot noir, Pacific, which had a beautiful nose, and lots of lovely fruit. However, the undoubted highlight of our dinner was the excellent service provided by the charming and humorous waiter, Alberto, with whom we had a number of delightful exchanges. He would make anyone's meal memorable, and we look forward to having him wait upon us again in the future!! Highly recommended, both for the excellence and authenticity of the cuisine, and the professionalism and entertainment value of the service!!

Our experience began with a very friendly greeting by the hostess when we arrived. We were then seated and almost immediately our water glasses were filled and bread and butter was brought to the table. After taking our drink order our waiter gave us the day’s specials. We then placed our order and within a short time our appetizers arrived. (I am very aware and sensitive to the pacing of a meal and this one was perfectly paced). Every one I’d greatly enjoyed our appetizers and entrees. We had a light dessert and cappuccino which was also very good. This was our first visit to Sel et Poivre but most certainly will not be our last.

Visitors to NYC ought to place Sel et Poivre at the top of their dining lists. There is no more authentic French bistro in Manhattan. Nor will anyone find 1) a better and more inclusive menu of French dishes or 2) a more reasonably priced menu. The staff is attentive, amiable, courteous. The owner, Christian, is a long-timer NYC restaurateur whose touch is perfection. Last night, within ear-shot of our table, was a young couple who were going to the Metropolitan Opera across town. They told us that Sel et Poivre was their restaurant of choice when coming's to NYC. Reserve now!!!
