French
For thirty years Sel et Poivre has served classic French bistro fare at their location on the Upper East Side. Situated on Lexington Avenue between 64th and 65th Streets, they are open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and feature a prix fixe brunch menu on the weekend.

The menus are elegant, yet not overdone. Appetizers include terrine de foie gras with red wine grapes, mussels marinière or à la provençale with French fries, and of course, an exceptional French onion soup that should not be missed. Dinner entrées include classic French items such as frog's legs in Pernod sauce and duck à l’orange with wild rice, plus items such as pan-seared chicken breast served with wild mushroom sauce and mixed vegetables, a bistro burger with French fries, and thin-sliced steak frites and salad. Of course if you're ready to indulge, they also feature a filet mignon in a red wine shallot sauce with roasted Yukon Gold potatoes and an aged New York sirloin steak with Roquefort or poivre sauce.

Sel et Poivre, my favorite NYC bistro, has retained a strong following. On Valentine's night, there were customers waiting for tables. Thereafter, the restaurant has been extremely well attended. Sel et Poivre has all the characteristics of a superior French bistro, especially the old world style in which vintage photographs of Paris and France line the walls. The staff is excellent - accommodating, cordial, helpful and professional. Last night I had a French classic - kidneys in mustard sauce - not every one's idea of gourmet fare but available at Sel et Poivre. My wife had superb cold salmon. Our friends shared a good and well-seasoned steak cooked to perfection. There are specials every night such as coq au vin. Book now. What is better than profiteroles doe dessert?

Some of you have read my enthusiastic reviews of what I consider to be NYC's outstanding bistro. Last night, I introduced two friends to Sel et Poivre. They brought the wines for a corkage fee of $35/bttl. One of us had skate wings. Two of us had Coq au Vin, the Tuesday special. Both of my guests spend time in Paris for gastronomic and oenological reasons. They were astounded by the quality of the food and service at Sel et Poivre - and by the reasonable prices. Christian, the owner, was present and joined us to taste the wines we brought. My guests and I shall return soon for another outstanding meal.

We were celebrating my two friends' birthdays The festive afternoon could not have been better. The waiter took our pictures (twice!) on my new phone, the hostess/manager accommodated my friend (making her a special whiskey sour with frothy egg white on the top), and the meal ended with a profiterole on the large round plate, "Happy Birthday" elegantly written around it in delicious chocolate. I can always count on delicious food and outstanding service at Sel et Poivre, my favorite neighborhood restaurant, and I look forward to my next visit. Diane :)

Sel et Poivre continues to be the gem of bistros in Manhattan. The extensive menu will satisfy all Francophiles and will enlighten those unfamiliar with the range of French fare. The prices are reasonable, particularly the prix fixe lunch and dinner. My wife has booked tables for her friends' traditional holiday lunch in December, which last year numbered 18. No loud music, no star-watching, no pretensions. Excellent French food of a range and quality difficult to find in NYC or elsewhere.

Attentive service, reasonable prices especially with the fixed price dinner. The restaurant had an odor of pest control - glad that was taken care of but initially very noticeable, at least for me, but my husband didn’t smell it (except downstairs). Food was quite good: string bean salad was nicely dressed and fresh with a sprinkling of crunchy almonds; the skate was excellent with a lemony butter sauce; good duck and pasta with salmon, tasty onion soup. We appreciated the extra profiteroles too. I found it hard to hear our conversation because of the noise level - a satisfying buzz for some people.

Food is excellent as us usual. The only complaint is the restaurant was swelteringly hot - at least 85 degrees with no fresh air and we were all dripping with sweat. It’s never been like that there before and after a number of meals there which have always been excellent this is the only time it was so hot so I excuse them as there might have been an HVAC issue. But it was 68 degrees outside and they could have opened a window. But if it’s that hot again I’ll never go back.

I’m sorry to relate that we had such poorly done skate snd trout that we aren’t coming again. This was our third bust: the first was good, and the skate was done very nicely. The second time? Not so much. But we gave them another chance and they failed miserably! The fish was tasteless, with no texture, and, frankly, I was embarrassed.

Sel et Poivre is a Manhattan culinary institution whose menu is exquisite. For those trendy diners who believe paying more reflects higher quality food, you are misinformed and missing a gem. Last December, my wife called a fashionable restaurant on Madison Ave - 2 blocks from Sel et Poivre - to ask what they would charge per person for a ladies lunch of 16-18 people. "We can do a prix fixe of $80 per person plus wine." I was charged with contacting the proprietor, Christian, at Sel et Poivre and asking the same question. "Our prix fixe for 3 courses for lunch is $29.95". End of discussion. The food bill was $400. The wine tab was $700. The menu contains many classical French dishes. The hors d'oeuvres are delicious and the profiteroles are my favorite - along with the apricot crepe. Book now.

A great restaurant if you're on the East side of the city. Very old-fashioned French -- and I mean that as a good thing! Extensive appetizer list; good variety of entrees, though I wish there were more French classics offered, like a Croque Monsieur, for example. (To be fair, there is a special classic French entrée every night; the night I was there, it was sweetbreads, which didn't appeal to me. Wish I had gone on a Coq au Vin night, or a Pot au Feu night.) It's a very busy restaurant, but the service is super-efficient and the waiters are very attentive. This is my go-to restaurant for an event from East 42 to East 86 St.
