Inspired by the warmth and vibrancy of Jamaica’s culture and people, Chubby's Jamaican Kitchen is a take on traditional Jamaican cooking balanced with relevant culinary twists. Co-founded as a passion project by Gusto 54 founder Janet Zuccarini and Angela Lawrence, Gusto 54’s Chief Culture Officer, Chubby’s is a celebration of their long friendship, and their love and respect for the island’s food and all the amazing Jamaican cooks they know.

Located in a circa-1890 row house re-envisioned by Partisans Architects and interior designer Wendy Haworth, Chubby’s boasts two floors of seating, two bars, and two outdoor patios. It melds old and new, inside and out to create a transporting dining experience complete with delicious Caribbean cooking, eclectic design and soulful hospitality. Chubby's is also a Michelin Guide CA - rated restaurant.

I will start by saying the food is absolutely delicious. We truly enjoyed every dish that we had. The issues we had were the lack of communication and the service, which did not warrant the auto-gratuity that was added. We had a reservation for 3pm for 7 people (my parents, aunt, uncle, cousin, sister and myself). We arrived 5-10 minutes early and were asked to wait. Another group arrived at 3pm, with 6 people. They were seated right away, with no communication to us. Once we were sat, we had to wait about 5-10 minutes before anyone came over to ask if we wanted water. In the time that we were waiting, we had time to figure out our drinks and appetizers. During dinner, dishes were not cleared, and no one actively checked in on the table. We asked for a side of gravy that never came. We asked for side plates so we could eat our dinner on them, I watched 3 employees look at our table without even trying to bring plates for us. Auto-gratuity is added but that doesn’t mean you ignore the table/guests. After dinner was finished, we sat for about 15 minutes with empty dishes on the table. When they finally came around to see if anyone wanted dessert, before the order was even placed, they were asking how we wanted to settle the bill. You never checked in on us throughout the course of the dinner, to see if we wanted more drinks, how things tasted and were going, but now you want to settle a bill!? A couple was sat beside us, and they waited a long time as well for someone to get a drink order. A server never came back to their table, so they paid for their drinks and went somewhere else to eat. Will I order food from here again to eat elsewhere, definitely, but not sure I would make the drive to dine in again.

We were the first customers of the day and they were so welcoming. Everything was delicious. Reasonably priced and service was lovely. Tia was the best! Go There!

Loved the ambience,vibe and great menubut being of West Indian decent I’d say the food is more Jamaican-inspired than authentic. Ordered: Jerk chicken, wings- delicious but not authentic Ackee&Saltfish - delicious, great portion, not greasy Rice&peas :( not flavorful, disappointing Festival, fried dumplin delicious Would return to try other items on the menu.

We have been to Chubby’s twice and thoroughly enjoyed both visits. The atmosphere is dynamic and the wait staff were extremely attentive. Food was excellent and with the heat quotient we like. Happy Hour was good value, especially if you are on your way to a concert or entertainment and the Jamaican Mule was addictive. Enjoyed our later afternoon meal. In particular our waitress, don’t know her name but a great British accent, was a gem, really helpful, checked in with us a lot and we never felt abandoned. The staff all work together really well.. We will be back.

We went to Chubby for a birthday celebration. We were impressed by the decor and warm hospitality however, the restaurant was very hot and didn’t seem to have air conditioning. The food was tasty however the portions were small and overpriced for Caribbean cuisine. We spent $200 on jerk chicken, oxtail and curry goat. Not worth it in my option.
