The Umami Burger is a must
I dont know why the menu was changed. Do not try to change something that is not broken. Unfortunately, once we were sat we didnt get greeted till maybe almost 10 mins in... after 15 mins another couple sat two tables down samw waiter. However they got their drinks first, their appetizers first, and their meal first. I dont like complaining but clearly they look like they had more money than us so hey i guess that means better service. We received our meal one hour after sitting down. That is crazy! And it was bery underwhelming. The food was way better before. You guys tried to be fancy and completely backfired. Will no longer go there.
Another outstanding experience at John Davenport's for Restaurant Week. Imaginative recipes and generous servings in an outstanding environment, fresh and contemporary. Must try!
Staff were very welcoming from the bartender to the hostess to the wait staff. Views are best in the city and the quality of food is very good. Service was excellent. Attentive without being intrusive. I will definitely be back for a special occasion or when I am looking to impress!
The receptionist was very unprofessional. I reserved a table on Nov 4 at 11:30am for Restaurant's Week's lunch through John Davenport's Restaurant Week link , but when we arrived at the restaurant she told us that there is no such a thing, so we ended up having a regular brunch there. A few minutes later, another couple actually did receive a Restaurant's Week's lunch's lunch menu. Also, the restaurant was under-staffed. The few waiters were very busy, and could not be attentive to individual tables. Davenport has a beautiful view and good food but I hope the service will be improved to make the restaurant more attractive to customers.
Good friendly and efficient service and a good range of dishes on the menu. Good views across the Yale area.
If only everything there was as good as the view!
Upon arriving everything looks beautiful! The view is outstanding, there is food as far as the eye can see, and everyone was all smiles. Unfortunately, things immediately took a turn for the worse.
Let me start at the end... although John Davenport's website shows that "The Art of Breakfast Buffet" is $23 the actual cost is $35 per person. That's a 50% difference right there! While $23 is a little on the steep side for eggs and french toast $35 is outrageous in my book!
After sitting at our table for a few minutes (only 3 other parties in the restaurant) our server proceeded to come over and take our drink order then disappear for 10 minutes. I should not have to get out of my seat to go look for water! This was a theme for the morning as my coffee cup and water glass seemed to be constantly empty.
All in all, the food was lukewarm and standard breakfast fair at best. The service was atrocious and the cost was egregious. I do not recommend.
We were met by friendly staff who showed us to our table. The view is spectacular and ambiance right for business lunch. The food was delicious and served in a short and prompt period of time.
Everything was lovely except for the food.... we all agreed the food looked better than it tasted. :(
Sunday brunch was awful...food was cold...I found hair in my eggs and restaurant was dirty
We have been dining at Jonathan Davenport for many years. It is a wonderful spot in New Haven. The wait staff is amazing, especially Robin. She is more than accommodating, as she anticipates and your needs. She always makes the evening exceptional because of her heartwarming touch. She and the restaurant are a true gem in New Haven.
Had a wonderful time celebrating my birthday at John Davenport's in New Haven! The six of us first enjoyed drinks and 2 items from the starter menu; Fried Oysters and Local Artisanal Cheeses. Both apps were delicious and the Tequila Old Fashioned was perfect! The Filet was ordered by 4 of us and was out of this world! Had a taste of the smoked short ribs which was tender and seasoned perfectly. The Diver Scallops and Shrimp looked fresh and amazing! Our server Monica brought over a gooey, chocolate dessert for the table to share, yummy!! And a big thank you to the chef for creating a birthday chocolate plate that made me feel so special! Oh and can't forget the wine!! Lots of choices and so tasty! Loved it all!! Will be back soon!
Coffee was Luke warm, limited choices, some of the selections needed refilling, service was fair at best. A $35 per person brunch that was extremely lacking in every possible way! Would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. Very disappointing!
Aiden was our waiter with the help of George. They were AWESOME!!! Extremely accommodating, polite, helpful, attentive and friendly. The restaurant was very clean and the view from the 19th floor is really nice.
Have enjoyed the restaurant before. The meal service was brunch only on a Sunday. By our seating at 1pm, the hot food choices were barely warm and not refreshed. and of other items, choices very limited.
Menu was very limited , it was very disappointing , I would not recommend this resturant to no one
Great food along with a nice view of downtown New Haven. Service was exceptional. The Ribeye for two is delicious and a tremendous value. The dessert that came with it wasn’t anything spectacular. Other than that the meal was wonderful
The food, service, and view was great! Absolutely no complaints whatsoever. Thank you.
What a great dinner. Service was spectacular, as were the food choice and drinks. Would definitely go back.
Good, but not what I expected. From the reviews and write-up, I expected John Davenport's to be an upscale restaurant at the top of the Omni hotel with great views of the city. The view was nice, but not anything beyond what you get from staying in one of the hotel rooms. The service was great, friendly and professional. Food was good, respectable but not great, but not a lot of variety on the menu. I don't know that I would consider this a special occasion restaurant. It felt like a hotel restaurant where you can get a decent meal, that happens to have a view of the city. Our meal was good, but not great, and not anything special or unique.
For great sunset views, rise to the top of the Omni in New Haven! The bar and restaurant at John Davenport’s are a tasty way to relax with panoramic views of the city. We had the Diver scallops and an excellent hot lobster roll; look forward to visiting again next time we’re in town. Welcoming staff, too! Bet they throw marvelous parties...
Great brunch! Excellent value, comfortable seating, gorgeous views, attentive service, and good food.
Nice wine list for reasonable prices & the chef's steak special is an awesome deal!
Hostess, manager, waiter, and omelette maker were all very friendly. However, other than my omelette, the food was just average, the floor around the brunch buffet tables was sticky, and I had to get up from my table to find a waiter to ask for a refill of my orange juice. I don't want to get anyone in trouble because they were all so nice, but .... there was plenty of room for improvement. Aside from that, the view of the city from the restaurant was spectacular, but not worth the price of admission.
We return here for special occasions. You never disappoint with fine food. We love your tasteful ambiance. It is quiet and we can easily converse with our friends. And, of course, the view is an extra treat.
Some of my meal was exceptional but there was other items that were not. The shrimp and scallops were very good......but the sauce on them and the quinoa was cold. I'm sure it was just a timing issue but it did take away from my dinner.
My friends and I had such a great time celebrating my birthday. The food was amazing, the service was amazing I will highly recommend this restaurant to any and everyone.
Lovely view, great food, friendly service. I’ve been here several times and would definitely recommend it.
The food was incredible the service impeccable Robin was our server she was amazing. The view absolutely gorgeous.
Stopped for a meal break on long day trip. Welcoming & convenient.
The facility and views were spectacular. Service was sub par. We ordered mimosas and the server just dropped the mini bottles of asti at the table with a glass of OJ. I guess we were supposed to serve ourselves. Two ordered from the menu and I ordered buffet. I was never directed to go to the buffet until after their meal was served. Buffet was generous but eggs were very dry and rubbery. I’m told the French Toast from the menu wasn’t great. Our table was off balance and the coffee kept spilling. We asked a staff member to put something under the leg but they never returned to help.
I took my parents here last year for Father's day dinner, and we had a great experience! So I decided to make a reservation for Father's day again this year. My parents wanted to eat earlier this time, so I made what I thought was a lunch reservation for 1:30. Unfortunately, when I made the reservation through Open Table, it didn't show that lunch wasn't available then, and that it was actually the very end of brunch. If I had known only brunch was available, I would have changed the reservation time.
I later looked on the restaurant's website, and learned that our reservation was accepted for 30 minutes before the restaurant had planned to close for a few hours prior to dinner. So, a number of the brunch items were no longer available at the buffet. When my parents went to the carving/omelette stations there was no one there to assist them. The french toast was virtually gone, and the couple of pieces that were left were stale from sitting for a while. I completely understand not wanting to have a bunch of items freshly made shortly prior to the end of brunch, but I just don't think I should have been able to make a reservation 30 minutes prior to the intended ending. Fortunately, when my mom found someone to ask for assistance, they were very accommodating at the carving station, and they also had a couple of fresh pieces of french toast made especially for us. But it felt uncomfortable having to request these things.
Our server was also very inattentive. As someone who works in the service industry myself, I try to be very understanding and patient, but she really just didn't seem interested in doing her job. Given that it was a buffet, all she needed to do was get our drinks. Instead, the host and another server were the ones to get us water, and to refill our water glasses. We had a difficult time getting our servers attention to order the bar drinks my parents wanted.
We won't be back for brunch; maybe for dinner since we had a much better meal then.
Went for Father's brunch. Buffet offerings are excellent although breakfast bowl at the omelet station was no longer offered. (We went two years ago)
Prime rib was excellent. Staff are attentive, accommodating and professional.
Gorgeous views overlooking New Haven. Cocktail not included in price of brunch.
Our waiter was wonderful, the food was great, but I feel the decor needs some updating. Overall though, a lovely experience!
We have enjoyed the spectacular brunch here many times but wanted to try dinner. We were not disappointed, great value, food, and service.
I seldom go to hotel restaurants unless I am traveling but JH is a reliable exception.
Great view and food was good, ambiance was not intimate but our server Robin was wonderful.
Def. one of my favorite restaurants. It was my wife and I, second time going there. We previously had our engagement dinner there. It’s an amazing place, with a great view of New Haven. Very cozy, very intimate. Excellent staff, fantastic food. We’ll def. be going back.
Very lackluster experience. Will never return.
Mother's Day menu was great! My wife enjoyed the delicious gluten free variety. The menu offered both simple breakfast and gourmet lunch choices. The deserts were fun and tasty even when a buffet.
