What an enjoyable experience! Ashley was incredible!! Food was delicious service perfect ! Will be back many times !!
Keeping in mind that it was in the city, I thought it was very expensive for what we got. The food was good. Small portions. The service was friendly and attentive.
Chef Steve Monnier offers classic bistro fare in addition to a tasting menu on Wednesday and Thursday evenings that is adventurous and fun. Chef Steve is a master in the kitchen and i have always had fantastic meals at his restaurants. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Loved, loved, loved this restaurant. Worth the drive from DC!
Excellent French food, one of Baltimore's best restaurants.
Steve Monnier has created a nice spot for lunch or dinner, in a nice building downtown. The food is creative and good and the service was very nice. Clearly a great lunch place or a pre-theatre outing. Definitely will return.
Early dinner for us. Happy hour was hopping but restaurant was quiet. Enjoyed several of the appitizers and seasonal fare. Our table was by the open kitchen. We enjoyed watching the chef prepare our food. Our server said they had only been open 9 months. Baltimore need to find this gem in the city. Great wine selection.
Outstanding service from the Maitre D and waitress. Food was outstanding, freshly prepared and hot. Seasonings were appropriate and not overwhelming and portions were generous.
Summary- Great Restaurant!!
Lovely time, great food and very nice staff.
Fantastic experience. The service is always friendly and attentive and the food is terrific
The fixed price soup and sandwich was good, although the squash soup a little too heavy on the salt, but it was on the high side price wise.
Excellent food and service.
this place is well worth the money. the food was delicious and i wish i could've stayed longer to come back to try something new. the food and wine were delicious, i will be coming back for more next off season!
Amazing food and great service
And they got us to the theatre in time! Loved it. Always do.
Really disappointed after hearing nice things from a friend. Out of popular dishes at 7:45PM. Food we had was oversauced and underseasoned. And service was pleasant but not competent.
Will not be back.
Go here! Such an underrated gem. I've been here twice and all the food I've eaten and wine I've drank has been top quality. Really beautiful french bistro atmosphere too.
Foie gras was great. Dinner menu wasn’t that great. Got the mushroom ravioli because, frankly, it looked like the best option if I didn’t want to share a plate. That main course was ok, but just ok. Dessert menu looked fine except you have limited choices if you have a nut allergy. Was a bit shocked and disappointed with dinner because I have gone there a few times for lunch and had a good meal each time.
The food and overall experience was spectacular. The seating was in direct view of the talented chefs preparing our meals which was wonderful. Every thing from the appetizers to the dessert and coffee were as fresh as possible and beyond expectation. Seriously, the best foie gras I have ever had!
A French bistro, done right. The place is cozy and welcoming, with nice finishes and an open kitchen. Service is knowing and helpful. Like all bistros, the menu is a bit limited, but what they have is very good. The kitchen is a bit uneven; steak was over cooked and duck was under cooked. But the meal was all in all very good. We will go back.
Outstanding in every way, and I'm a foodie. Try the celery root pasta. Celeriac Carbonara. Unique and incredible.
Just go! Great experience all around.
Chez Hugo may be the best French bistro in town! I've been there multiple times and I have been thrilled every time. My son is a chef, so I have very high standards. This place has it all ... knowledgeable, talented chef (and the entire kitchen team!); the wait staff and bartender are knowledgeable and helpful; the hostess is welcoming. Love this place!
From the moment we walked in from the rain storm to our departure, we were treated as welcome friends enjoying a delicious, unhurried meal in a lovely setting. Our food was excellent, particularly the potato leek soup, the fresh green salad, and braised lamb main course. Our table faced the kitchen where we could see the multiple chefs and sous-chefs making plates for us and other customers. All-in-all a wonderful way to celebrate a wedding anniversary.
We went to celebrate two birthdays. It was a very rainy evening, and the restaurant is a little off main drag in Baltimore, but we found it without any trouble. We thought the complementary parking garage was next door, but couldn't find it easily. We had to circle back through one way streets to get to Chez Hugo and then did street parking. When we entered, the hostess told us the parking was a couple of blocks away and it was raining cats and dogs, so that wasn't very helpful
The drinks and the food were well prepared, very tasty. The potato leek soup and escargots for first course were great. Everyone's main course was well prepared. The braised lamb was so tender and flavorful, the duck confit and sausage was great and the steak frites was very authentic. Desserts were great. Paris Brest, apple tart and marshmallow dessert were good.
Overall it's a lovely space with thoughtfully prepared bistro food. It is a bit pricey however. We were there on a rainy weeknight, and it was not at all crowded. I hope that it's busier and that this restaurant will be a successful venture. Chez Hugo is a great addition to the Baltimore Restaurant scene.
One of the better restaurants in Baltimore. Excellent halibut and creative cocktails.
We had a great meal on Saturday night. The food and service were equally exceptional. I had the cassoulet which was rich in flavor and plated with skill. If you are looking for a French bistro, I would definitely recommend Chez Hugo.
Food and service were terrific....the noise level made it impossible for us to stay for dessert!
Having written reviews for Open Table for many years, this is the first time we feel compelled to write a negative one.
Sadly. we hoped that Chez Hugo would be a positive experience and it was not.
The wine and liquor pours were very skimpy - smaller than we can remember in a restaurant. My husband ordered a Great Goose on the rocks and it had very little vodka in the glass. He then ordered a Grey Goose neat to add to the glass and it appeared to be less than 1/2 inching in the bottom of the glass.
We thought the bottle of wine markups were outrageous. 2015 Brewer Clifton Santa Rita Chardonnay was listed at $137/bottle. We buy the wine for $25.00 per bottle and checked this wine and two others online while having dinner to find similar huge mark ups. The Brewer Clifton was marked up 4448%! When we asked the server about the size of the pours, he said that it was what it is. When we asked him about the wine markups he said that they came from a former wine manager.
As for the food, the escargots were exceptional. The halibut was small in portion and luke warm. We did not stay for desert because the two courses ordered took 3 hours to get tot the table and eat. That is 1 1/2 hours per course.
Service was obviously poor. The pace of the meal was slow on a night that the restaurant was at least 2/3 empty when we arrived and maybe 1/3 or more empty when we departed. The server was not attentive and has to be reminded of things we ordered - both drinks and dinner.
Unfortunately, Chez Hugo has a very long way to improve to survive in a city with many good alternatives.
I've eaten lunch twice at Chez Hugo and dinner once and enjoyed each meal. No disappointments. All of the food, from salad to bread to main dish to dessert, is outstanding. French bistro, fresh, local, delicious. Service was great, the wine list was comprehensive, the seating very comfortable, and the atmosphere excellent. You can actually have a good conversation and relaxed and excellent meal here. It is worth the one block walk from the inner harbor to enjoy such a good restaurant.
Absolutely delicious. The best meal I’ve had in a long time.
The French onion soup escargot and dessert were amazing as well as the service. The duck and steak frites were below average. They served us undercooked soggy fries and it appeared as if they realized it but still served food anyway. Saw a chicken dish go by for which I may go back and get.
A very good place to go. Excellent service, excellent wine list. Food was fantastic, from the apps to the entrees to dessert. It was a treat to watch the kitchen in action preparing. Haven't tried the bar, but next time may arrive early to check it out.
Excellent food paired with wonderful service and decor made for a lovely evening!
Excellent traditional French food, top notch service, very good wine list.
Great French Bistro! Excellent food! Excellent service! Highly recommended!
This was our first visit to Chez Hugo but not our last. The food was incredible!
Utterly amazing. A true gem and one of my favourite meals (dare I say in the top 3?) in Baltimore over the past four years.
This was our first visit to Chez Hugo. And what a good one! The food was superb, and the service excellent, and the architectural surrounds very interesting.
My only disappointment was that the melon and ham I ordered for an appetizer was so tiny. Two miniscule slices of cantalope with a few very small squares of ham. Delicious but diminutive.. My companions all had lovely salads. ...all said they were delicious. My main dish was so good that it made up for the slight disappointment over the appetizer. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
The first part our experience was not the restaurant’s fault. We parked on Redwood and went past a trash strew alley crawling with rats. We sat down in a well appointed area and then told they only had enough Grey Goose for one martini when 2 were ordered. We ordered dinner and it took nearly 45 minutes to be served. My gazpacho was very good and exceptionally small portion followed by the fish which was a small portion, but was just warm ( probably sitting for 15 minutes).
Um... no grey goose, slow service, small portions. At least I didn’t over eat
