Food quality was excellent. However, the service was horribly slow. We spent over 3 hrs for dinner. In addition, my friend had the coffee creamer spilled down her back and jacket which was on her chair. The server didn't even bring it to her attention that she had done it until my my friend realized she was soaked. The restaurant did not offer ample amends until I asked to speak with the manager. Ultimately, they did comp her meal which they should have done outright.
Not that the Oban wasn’t nice it just wasn’t what I expect from a higher end restaurant. The French Onion soup was burnt on top and not overly tasty. The beet salad had tasteless dressing. The salmon dish was good I will admit and the sweet potato soup was phenomenal.
The most disappointing of all was the service. For a high end restaurant I expect high end service. The waiter didn’t know what was in the soup which is fine but he didn’t offer to go find out and did so reluctantly when we asked him to.
The beet and goat cheese salad had lots of salad but precious little beets or goat cheese. The add on Chicken was well cooked and delicious but was $10 extra, I did not feel that this plate was worth $23. Excellent service, good atmosphere, but not great value for money
We came for Fabulicious on a Sunday. The restaurant itself was lovely - great ambience and character. We were early for our reservation and were seated promptly in a wonderful corner window location with a good view of Gate St. and people passing by along with the horse carriages.
The meal was ok - nice choice of selections. The squash soup was described by the waiter as "spicy" and it really was spicy. No problem for me but my wife found it far too spicy and when she had neglected to finish, the waitress asked if it was ok and whether the waiter had mentioned it was spicy or not. She said he had told her but the waitress still offered her another appetizer - a nice touch but my wife didn't ask for another. The meal was quite nice but was somewhat lukewarm - still good though. Dessert was the highlight of the meal - a delicious pumpkin cheesecake. All in all, a nice meal in a lovely restaurant.
The service was quite good, however perhaps the best way to describe our meal would be inconsistent. The appetizers - one good (french onion soup); one fairly good (sweet potato soup, which would have improved visually and taste-wise with a swirl of balsamic vinegar, rather than the swirl of oil that persisted as a little slick of oil droplets). The rib eye was tender, tasty and cooked to specification, and although the accompanying vegetables had a pleasant appearance, they were oily and lacking in taste. The presentation of the chicken and rice main course was extremely unappetizing - the rice seemed to have been cooked excessively, resulting in a somewhat regurgitated lumpy pudding appearance. The chicken was moist however quite bland. Desserts were the best part of our meal - well presented and tasty - the apple in puff pastry was delicious; the poached pear very nice, with the exception of the sponge toffee pieces, which stuck the patron’s top and bottom teeth completely together.
We have been to Oban Inn many times in the past, as residents of this area. The food is always good as it was on this occasion for the 2017 Fabulicious event.
The salad, salmon, and the chocolate tort were excellent. However, the service is usually lacking to be rated above "average (3 stars at best). We asked one waiter for salt but it never arrived. A bit later as the food was getting cold, we asked another waiter who brought it promptly. No one asked us if we wanted coffee or tea with our dessert at any point. Seemed like they were in a hurry to finish serving us. We went elsewhere to have coffee after eating the delicious tort.
As we were leaving, our coats at the coat check could not be located as we were not given anything to help relocate them. One of us needed to go back to where the coats were hung to help retrieve them.
It is a pity that the excellent efforts of the Chef and the entire kitchen are not adequately completed by some of the others at Oban Inn, which was a problem in previous visits as well.
Go for the food but do not expect great service.
Our meal was delicious. Everything was well-prepared and portions were generous. Our waitress was friendly and helpful but didn't hover. We would eat here again.
The only downside was the couple at the next table who were a bit too loud and too nosy. They wanted to engage us in their conversation when we preferred to be by ourselves. No fault of the restaurant!
Our waitress, Alexa was lovely. The restaurant is small and warm feeling. We had a great table that overlooked the gardens. They are missing an opportunity to set up small landscape lights to view the garden after dark. My husbands Diet Coke was flat. The 2nd glass was fine. Now for the food - my French onion soup was Luke warm, the cheese was still in slice form and was still cold. The broth tasted like a fatty broth. Alexa offered to bring a new another one. Did not take her up on the offer since even heated with melted, bubbly cheese you could not save the flavor. The shrimp and scallops over pasta was flavorless and extremely oily. My salmon over vegetables was extremely oily as well. A great disappointment.
We had a very enjoyable dinner at the Oban Inn. The mushroom soup was good and the salmon main course was very good. The pumpkin cheesecake was excellent - not too sweet. Note - the side of vegetables with the salmon was spicy for my husband and I would recommend that the wait staff always give a heads up if something is on the spicy side. We will definitely come here again
Excellent atmosphere, great food, amazing service! We had a phenomenal late lunch here on Sunday afternoon. We had tried to go to some of the other wineries for a bite to eat but they were all full or had a wait so we ended up at the Oban Inn and were not disappointed! The meal was wonderful in every way and parking was easy which is hard to find around that area!
Our party of four had some food sensitivities (one didn't like spice, one was gluten- and lactose-intolerant). Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu, make creative suggestions and remembered all our peculiar little requests. The food and ambience were both delightful and we LOVED our view of the breath-taking gardens. A wonderful experience!
Once again, we were warmly greeted by the friendly, professional, and delightful staff, who made sure we comfortably finished our meals well in time to walk to the theater. Our appetizers and main courses were some of the best we have had the pleasure of enjoying, with exceptional attention to detail, presentation, rich, luxurious sauces and the highest of quality of ingredients. Dessert, a rare treat for us, was well worth the indulgence, and not to be missed. Local wine choices were extensive and well priced. We enjoyed everything about the meal at Oban Inn, to the degree we cancelled our coveted Saturday night reservation at another top local restaurant, to have the opportunity to dine at Oban Inn for a second evening. We'll be back again soon!
We dine here a few times a year and it is never disappointing. The food and service are absolutely outstanding. Food is creative and beautifully presented. Wines are pricey, but typical of all other restaurants in NOTL. Alexa took care of is this time and we were treated royally from the moment we entered the dining room. Thank you for another great experience.
Ordered the king crab & avocado salad, it was good except for the chunk of shell.
The seafood linguine was really quite heavy on the garlic.
I don't think the kitchen was informed of my complaints though, for either dish.
Ordered a glass of wine that the server suggested but I could not drink it. No one asked if I wanted something else or remove it rom the bill.
I won't be back.
My friend and I greatly enjoyed our meals prior to attending the theatre. The beef was excellent and nice portion sized. A bit on the expensive side, but worth it for a once in a year special treat when attending the Shaw Festival in beautiful Niagara on the Lake. We hope to come back next year.
Love the setting and the grounds were beautiful, had a loud talker beside us but no fault of yours. Had a 25th wedding anniversary dinner after getting engaged at the Oban Inn and did not expect anything but would have been nice to have a offer of a after dinner liquor or a desert once again not something that was required. Request the best table days prior but ended up waiting for a clean table by the window but received the one with the post so not the nicest table after specifically requested it.
Ambience and diner was superb and the only small difference I would have liked was fresh table flowers and or a romantic candle.
Very well prepared and presented food and beverages. Menu was not large, but had a variety. Server was attentive and knowledgeable. Glad we chose this for a birthday celebration. We would go back again when in the area. Only critique is the kitchen was quite slow during our visit given that most tables already had their dinners when we arrived.
Great meal and service, unfortunately they would not accept our open table reward cheque saying they had never seen one before and did not know how to credit our bill. If they are an open table client they should be educated on your policy.
We had a wonderful server, Alexa, who provided the perfect level of service - attentive but not intrusive. She worked with the kitchen to happily organize a delicious vegan option for me, & had hearty meaty options for my dining companions. It was a cozy setting in a beautiful old inn with lovely gardens. I would definitely recommend it!
