Restaurant Nora- Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Although I ordered from the fixed price menu, the waist continued to pressure me as well as my guest to get another dessert, which would've cost more. Neither of us appreciated being pressured after already spending a good amount. For that to happen made the overall experience bad. They even brought my guest dessert silverware although my guest had already declined dessert. That type of pressure is rude and disrespectful.
I went to Nora for the first time 25 years ago and loved it. Over the years I've been and enjoyed it but I believe it is living on its initial reputation. The meal I had this week was disappointing on all levels. The room was very noisy and we were seated in the middle of it. The service was very slow and we had to ask for things several times. We were also told that they were running out of things including the wine we had ordered a bottle of and the dessert. Finally, the food was mediocre. My halibut was overcooked and my husband's scallops undercooked.
I do not live in DC, but try to go to Restaurant Nora every time I visit the district. The restaurant was not up to typical good service and food. First, I arrived at 7:10 for a 7:15 reservation. The hostess was not at the stand; so the manager checked me in. The hostess returned and sat two tables who came in after me before evening acknowledging that my party of two was waiting. Second, the server was not good. It took a long time between ordering drinks and appetizers before our order was taken. My dining companion ordered a salad to eat before the entrée. Our entrees came out first and then the salad. Third, the food was good as usual, but seemed like it may have been sitting for a while before it was brought to the table. I think this is a rare occasion for NORA, as my other experiences there (at least 12) were wonderful. I was told that the restaurant is closing soon, so the quality may reflect more experienced servers moving to better places.
Braised Lamb Osso Bucco was delicious, so tender and flavorful. For dessert, the combination of molten lava cake with ginger cheesecake made a heavenly bite! Service was attentive and warm, like being hosted at a friend's home. Wonderful experience all around.
I decided to try out Nora's because a friend of mine told me it was vegan friendly and really good but I was only offered one meal which could be made vegan which was the risotto and it was just rice and some chopped unseasoned veggies. There isn't a variety to choose from and I wasn't offered any non alcoholic beverages. My waiter seemed a little drunk and was walking into tables and chairs and we were not approached once we sat for a good 20 minutes. It is ridiculously overpriced for very tiny and flavorless portions. I honestly did not enjoy it at all.
for a restaurant with such impeccable credentials, my own many years of patronage including birthdays and retirement parties, and *especially* with the restaurant closing in 2 weeks, the SO and i expected more attention to detail from the server. it is not acceptable tor her to overlook a simple gin and tonic, ordered at the beginning of the meal, so belatedly that it comes out with the diner's entree and is no longer appetizing. the generic "happy birthday" menu would be lightyears more personal with the simple addition of the diner's name, which i did provide via open table. other small details like this add up. for our last experience here, i was surprised and disappointed by the lackluster service.
My wife and I have been coming to Nora's for the past 26 years and have never been disappointed. As usual, the food was excellent in taste and presentation, the service quick and efficient. This is a restaurant where you can sit across from someone and be able to have a conversation in a low voice. A very nice place that I would highly recommend.
We celebrated our wedding anniversary this Saturday night. The Maitre D' was thoughtful enough to remember that we had had our wedding luncheon in the garden room and seated us there accordingly. We have always had outstanding meals at Restaurant Nora's. Saturday's meal was no exception. As much as we enjoyed ourselves, we couldn't help being somewhat wistful realizing that a restaurant that I have loved since the early 80s would soon be no more! Nora, thanks for everything. We went there to say farewell to an excellent restaurant that was an early leader in local and organic food and still be a top level restaurant. We left (for what is likely our last visit) on an extremely high note. It was a superb meal-- excellent service, food, wine, with the quilts on the wall lighten up the dining space!!!
Don't wait until near closing date, because by then you may not be able to get reservations. Nora's is going out on a high note; don't miss the chance to say farewell.
Restaurant Nora is a lovely old style restaurant that was the first organic certified restaurant in the United States. It closes at the end of June having pretty much run its course -- the food while elegantly prepared and presented is somewhat uneven. I had the rib steak and it was tasty - but full of fat and grizzle - something I was disappointed with considering the $42 price. Mussels were exceptional in a great broth and the lamb chops my companion had left me wishing I had chosen that instead of the steak. Deserts were excellent across the board. Worth visiting to cross off the bucket list one of America's legendary trend-setting restaurants before it is gone having left a legacy of the now every where farm to table featured dining.
Restaurant Nora has been a favorite visited on many trips to D.C. Where Nora Pouillion has been at the helm for nearly 40 years. The food was as good as always -- but sadly, the restaurant will be closing on June 30th. Many locals patiently waiting on reservations Sauturday evening when it appeared that folks were making certain they had one last dining experience there. It's a restaurant that I will definitely miss on future trips to D.C.
We had a wonderful meal and opted for the winepackage, tailored to go well with the dishes. Unfortunately our servant didn't tell us spontaneously about the wines, the presentation was unengaged. The quality of the dishes however, balanced the negatives quite well and we had one of our better meals in the US.
We celebrated our three year anniversary at Restaurant Nora and the experience was beyond spectacular! The food was fresh, perfectly seasoned, with lovely presentation! Cocktails were well balanced and wine list was wonderful! Highly recommended for date nights and special occasions!
We were seated in an annex area that we did not enjoy and the restaurant was not able to accommodate our request to be placed in the main area. This did cause some annoyance with us which we conveyed to the wait staff. It seemed difficult for the wait staff to be as engaged as one expects and the service was not up to past experiences. However, they are closing soon and perhaps there is not as much concern with that standard knowing we are unlikely to return.
It met all my expectations. The service got a little slow after dinner was served and we had ordered dessert. I love what they are doing here with everything organic and I love the information on the back of the menu. I read every word to my tablemates!
I am so sad this is my first time at Restaurant Nora and that it will be closing on next month!
Best wishes to Nora and all her staff. You have all been part of an era which I hope will continue to florish and grow.
