Since 1963, we have been offering the best of traditional edo-mae (Tokyo) style Japanese dishes from Sukiyaki and Tempura to Sushi and multi-course Kaiseki.
A restaurant of firsts, Nippon was the first Japanese restaurant to serve Sushi in NYC, and made global headlines when founder successfully petitioned the FDA to allow fugu-blowfish to be imported to the U.S. Nippon is also the birthplace of the Beef Negimayaki and many other dishes that are now standard fare in Japanese restaurants around the world. In addition, Nippon makes its own premium quality ni-hachi soba-noodles and presses its own tofu.

Excellent as always!
Very expensive. Good quality of food but very expensive
What an incredible dining experience at Restaurant Nippon. They do everything right- the quality of the food, the pleasant staffs & the professional services. That's the reason that it has been a successful establishment after all these years. Highly recommend!
The miso soup was good but was a tiny portion, and to me, was too brief a dining experience. The fish and vegetable Tempura was very good. When I am in a fish restaurant, I usually do not order a dish with shrimp in it because they are often pre-cooked. Here, in this Japanese restaurant, they were very tasty, and apparently not pre-cooked. The vegetables were tasty as well as the shrimp.
Always reliable with excellent food and service. I am here once a week for business meals. All my clients and colleagues want to come back after they come once.
Wonderful! I had a wonderful lunch outdoors at Restaurant Nippon. The service was impeccable as always and the food was delicious. The outdoor setup is lovely and private and I felt safe eating there. I always have a great, authentic experience at Restaurant Nippon.
Welcoming, wonderful experience! The staff could not have been nicer, offering advice and service when needed, but not intruding unnecessarily. The menu is traditional but innovative. We enjoyed a terrific, celebratory evening.
I know them for 50 years, and recommend to anyone
Nippon has been consistent for me for over 20 years. One of the few Japanese restaurants with both great sushi and great Japanese barbecue. Superb service.
It was an oasis of serenity, relaxation, and enjoyment. The duck and the Seabass were excellent, though the fish a bit better than the duck. The octopus was delicious. But it was the way everything came together that was perhaps the best thing of all. We highly recommend this for people who like good food and good service and good conversation.
First discovered in year 1972. Frequent diner, consistently good in food, service, ambience.
Food was very good. I am assuming due to staff shortages, service was slow. One drink was never delivered and we had to wait 25 minutes, after 3 requests for our bill. Noise issue was due to I e child , whose parents allowed him to run around.
Really nice ambience, great service, delicious food :)
went here with my family and friends, we had the tempura which was very good, the karage which is also very good, and we got some nigiri sushi. as someone who really loves sushi i could tell that the fish wasn’t the freshest which for the price made me very disappointed. i would recommend anything on the menu except the sushi, ESPECIALLY if you already know and love good sushi
Very pleasant ambiance and friendly personnel. Food was high quality-so delicious. I really had a very nice dining experience.
The service was just amazing! The care taken in explaining various menu items, the selection and presentation of the food was the highest level. And the food - in our case sushi- was absolutely delightful and wonderful. We so enjoyed our dinner there.
Poor food quality. Stay away from their tasting menu. Dishes are pre-made and taste worse than what I normally get from the Japanese supermarket.
Quality never disappoints!
Overall experience was good, the food was excellent. The quality, the presentation and the variety really set this establishment apart from most others in NYC. This is real Japanese food.
On a more negative note… The waiter was a little too chatty for our liking, it felt like he forgot about us in the beginning as we waited about 30 minutes to order our food… said it was really busy inside but it wasn’t. He charged us for 2 bowls of rice which we ordered but never received, but we didn’t say anything just for the sake of leaving and not having to interact with him more than we already had.
Authentic Japanese Real Food. Always makes us happy and smile. Thank you for providing great services.
Truly authentic Japanese restaurant. Very polite and friendly service. I felt like I was in Japan! Definitely come back again.
This remains as one of my favorite classic Japanese restaurants in NYC. Interiors are inviting with careful attention to health safety measures. All Menu dishes remain consistent and authentic. I also like that they have lunch and seasonal specials.
Love Restaurant Nippon. It is one of the most underrated Japanese restaurants in the city.
Food is always excellent. They have sushi as well as innovative dishes, including negamyaki, which they invented. Their soba is grown on their own farm.
I had the sushi lunch special - $43 was high for what I received. The nigiri was of mixed quality, the tuna and salmon was very good, but the remainder was fair at best. Service was spectacular, location convenient and the ambiance very pleasant. I will likely give it another try to see if I was just unlucky, but I won't go out of my way.
I have eaten at Nippon since the mid-1960s. My latest meal there was excellent. I recommend Nippon highly. The sukiyaki is superb. The atmosphere is wonderful.
Great service, great food (not the most commonly known Japanese menu). Always worth a visit!
I hadn’t eaten in this restaurant for many years and was not disappointed last week. The food was as I remembered excellent and the service is spectacular. I would recommend it highly
The food is standard sushi fare. It won't disappoint you; neither is it worth going out of your way for. The service is excellent. If you are in the midtown east and hankering for sushi, you could do worse.
Authentic, fresh and tasty food. I liked that the menu had many Japanese specialties. All the guests were pleased. Service was wonderful, and I loved the "old school" style of the place. Not flashy, just solid. Will definitely go back.
Food and service was amazing!
The food was nicely prepared and tasted pretty good. The serving staff was friendly but seem to take too much time delivering meals.
Excellent all around. One of the best on New Yotk. Highly recommended.
We have been eating at this restaurant for years. It only gets better. Last nights dinner was fantastic. Please have dinner there.
Advertised as the oldest continuous Japanese restaurant in New York City (56th year) we decided to try it out. All of the staff were very gracious and the food was good quality but unfortunately it was seriously overpriced. Perhaps the best value we had was a bottle of dry chilled sake for $95. I like Japanese omelet so I ordered 2 pieces sushi and 2 pieces sashimi. The waiter did not tell me that in our mixed assortment plate there would also be omelet. I ordered an uni handroll and was advised that because of the quantity of uni they would be using, it is priced as a double portion; $40 is too much money, and the uni was not overflowing. In fact it was made up of small pieces trimmed off other orders and terrible value. The quality of the food was very good but considering that we only had one bottle of sake a bill of $525 for four people (with tax but before gratuity) is simply too much money. Next time I will remember HATSUHANA is a better choice.
Incredible service with impeccable food. Highly recommend for sushi lovers!
I went to this restaurant for my wedding anniversary with my wife. We could not be more happy with this restaurant. Everybody was super nice, food was delicious, price-quality was great. We will definitely come back on our next trip to NY.
It was a great dining experience. Highly recommended!
Excellent old timer Japanese restaurant that has been around for a a long time. We ordered large sashimi which was very fresh and high quality. Homemade tofu was also great and came with tasty paste. Will come back to try more dishes.
Service was so great all around. We had such a good time. The uni was so good.
The food is excellent here. The fish is very fresh and everything is prepared artfully to look appealing as well as taste delicious. It's very authentic Japanese food and although it is expensive, it is worth the price
