Japanese
Enjoy the perfect mix of elegance and comfort at the original Nippon, New York's oldest authentic Japanese restaurant -- now in its 56th year!

Since 1963, we have been offering the best of traditional edo-mae (Tokyo) style Japanese dishes from Sukiyaki and Tempura to Sushi and multi-course Kaiseki.

A restaurant of firsts, Nippon was the first Japanese restaurant to serve Sushi in NYC, and made global headlines when founder successfully petitioned the FDA to allow fugu-blowfish to be imported to the U.S. Nippon is also the birthplace of the Beef Negimayaki and many other dishes that are now standard fare in Japanese restaurants around the world. In addition, Nippon makes its own premium quality ni-hachi soba-noodles and presses its own tofu.

There is a reason this place is still busy after 52 years - food and service are authentic and attentive. May you be here for generations to come!

Traditional, a bit old fashioned even, quiet and serene. Good service. Tasty, very fresh sushi. The soba were just so-so.

A traditional Japanese restaurant in Midtown that I have been coming to for decades. Comprehensive menu, including a great luncheon card. One of the few restaurants in New York with a tempura bar, with each individual selection lovingly cooked to order. House made soba is some of the best in the city. Long serving and professional management and staff unobtrusively give you a sense you're in a quiet corner in Japan.

Sukiyaki is authentic and so delicious! My favorite dish is Sukiyaki and I have a hard time finding a restaurant that can make it well and correct. Restaurant Nippon definitely has it right.

Nippon did not disappoint! Everything was excellent -- it was perhaps the best sushi I have ever had. I also appreciated that it was not terribly loud so I could talk without having to raise my voice. One special treat was that the wait staff noticed I had made the reservation because of a birthday. They and made a point to celebrate it, without any prompting from me. It truly was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. I recommend it highly to all.

Had an amazing experience at this restaurant. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and accommodating. They helped us prepare and set up for my sister’s 50th bday. I’m glad we went to this place to celebrate. We had an excellent time. The food was very good too. Very good presentation and very delicious. Would highly recommend this to everyone. We also have a 7mo baby and they made us feel comfortable and took care of our needs.

The service was excellent. Our server was friendly and very helpful. The food was ok. The menu didn’t match what I had found on line which made it harder for my daughter to eat. I had the NY sushi platter and again, it was ok. It was quiet and we enjoyed our conversation. The decor was older and outdated. My mom had the beef wrapped in scallions and enjoyed it. The miso soup was good as well. The chicken teriyaki was again just ok. I was underwhelmed overall.

Sushi was presented in a straightforward fashion. The fish was superb. The selection could be broader, they lacked amaebi and mackerel despite being on the menu. Service was attentive, but in no way rushed. Highly recommend due to the freshness of the sushi, the careful preparation and the service!

This was my first visit. I meet a old friend (who lives in Taiwan) for lunch every year during the week of Thanksgiving, when we both are in New York. We like to have a leisurely lunch and recount what has happened to us and acquaintances during the previous year. The restaurant was perfect for this. The food and ambiance were perfect. We were not rushed and the service was very good. My only (minor) issue was that the quantity of food (sushi and sashimi) was a bit light, considering the price. I understand midtown prices but I was a bit surprised. However, we intend to repeat our visit next year.

I always dine at least once when I'm visiting from Washington. It's the most authentic Sukiahi you will find in New York and they introduced it to the City in the 70's. Very fresh authentic ingredients. Order the more expensive one and you will get quite a show at your table where they cook it.

All the other dishes are excellent as well and don't be put off by its age. It is the older version of Japanese cuisine but the dishes are fresh and the atmosphere is quiet and lovely. Kimona clad waitresses and you can have your own private room where you sit on cushions, if you wish.

It’s been a few years that my mother has been able to cook, she’s now 95. She’s Japanese and cooked Sukiyaki all the time.
I thought that this sukiyaki was like my mother’s. My mother would slice the beef like thin bacon, here it’s larger pieces which made it cup and curl more and had to be torn in pieces with a set of chopsticks to eat, not all that easy. Otherwise it was very, very good.
We used to drop a raw egg in our big bowl of sukiyaki but here I was told to dip my food in the separate bowl of egg, and it’s traditional. After the cook left I dumped the egg over my food! I prefer it that way.
Staff is top notch and atmosphere very authentic.

We ordered sashimi, pirikara-shrimp, agedashi tofu, and cold noodles. Sashimi was fresh and good but there's not much for the price. Pirikara shrimp was good but again not much quantity- just a little bit. We expected very good soba but it was ended up with disappointment. Soba noodle was very gummy. We had never tasted such gummy noodles before! Miso soup was very poor quality tasted like instant soup. The service staffs were very awkward and we felt uncomfortable. For some reason, voices from other corner was annoying. We are not going back again.

Great experience will come back again and again. Only improvement would be that the waiters leave the table/not stare at you throughout dinner. It clearly comes from a good place, they are so friendly and service is great aside from this.
