Since 1963, we have been offering the best of traditional edo-mae (Tokyo) style Japanese dishes from Sukiyaki and Tempura to Sushi and multi-course Kaiseki.
A restaurant of firsts, Nippon was the first Japanese restaurant to serve Sushi in NYC, and made global headlines when founder successfully petitioned the FDA to allow fugu-blowfish to be imported to the U.S. Nippon is also the birthplace of the Beef Negimayaki and many other dishes that are now standard fare in Japanese restaurants around the world. In addition, Nippon makes its own premium quality ni-hachi soba-noodles and presses its own tofu.

Amazing! Authentic Japanese food, experience and great/friendly service!
Everyone enjoyed their meals.
Great outdoor dining setup, with partitions between tables and a relaxing garden vibe. Food was fantastic!
Had a really nice dinner here - outside and with a lot of privacy. Attention to detail is immaculate and service level good. Food is also worth the visit! Will be coming back
The quality of the service and food was fantastic. Under the circumstances it was a top quality effort.
Fantastic food and service
Outdoor dining extremely noisy
Love Nippon. I think Nippon is the most underrated Japanese restaurant in New York.
Food is always good. And in addition to traditional sushi, they serve many Japanese dishes not easily available. Well have never had a bad or disappointing meal there.
Glad they are redecorating. It is needed. But the food here is always great.
Very cramped quarters and rushed service. Is being renovated and hopefully will lead to a better experience.
Very old school Japanese restaurant. I loved the ambiance, but the service and food were only okay. Even though they say they have vegetarian options, the server was offended and astonished when we asked. She sputtered they have a few salads, but wasn’t even sure they had the vegetable roll listed on the menu.
not sure I like the new menu. miss the noodle options
Excellent as usual
Magical! Staff was warm and accommodating. Food was exceptional! Authentic Japanese cuisine at its finest!!!
After 30 years of service, Nippon is the original Japanese restaurant in Manhattan. They are a proud and excellent kitchen, service and management team.
Recommended to go there by a patron at another sushi restaurant we met in Chelsea. We were looking for Sukiyaki, which is not common to find anymore. This restaurant had the best sukiyaki we have had in a long time. The staff were very friendly and prompt.
Nice and quiet so we could chat all night long.
Thank you so much for joining us. We are so happy you enjoyed your Sukiyaki! We look forward to welcome you back soon.
Authentic Japanese restaurant. Quiet and seats are separate. Good for business dinner.
Surprisingly good experience I wasn't expecting. They put us in a private dining room and emphasized that they won't be charging extra. Waitress was a little curt but warmed up toward the end. Anniversary menu was a great bargain. My guests who are Japanese food novices loved it.
Excellent sushi and great service - really convenient location
It is the best and most authentic Japanese food restaurant. We have been going there for 11 years now, and never go to any other restaurant for Japanese food.
One of most authentic Japanese restaurants I have been. Wonderful food and service.
Expensive but worth it. A special place, and it was lunch.
Very good service. They are very attentive.
Solid and authentic mainstay of Japanese cuisine in New York. Under the experienced guidance of longtime GM, Yasuhiro Makoshi, this restaurant has a diverse menu and relaxing environment with high quality offerings. While not flashy, you will enjoy a first rate dining experience.
The lunch service is not as nice as the wait staff kept rushing us; rushing to order, rushing to serve multi-courses ... I don’t do midtown sit down expensive lunch unless it’s a meeing. I would not come again.
Nice ambiance - food not that great. COD was certainly not fresh. Very mediocre
Overall, a positive experience with good and friendly service. Food was a bit mixed in all fairness, fantastic miso soup but average tuna sushi. Restaurant Is a bit old-fashioned but nicely quiet, which is a rare treat in NYC.
I’m glad I found this sushi restaurant in NYC! Loved the food and the service! Will be back next time I’m in town.
Ganz lieber Service. Essen langweilig aber qualitativ gut. Ambiente leider mangelhaft.
Great, as usual.
My colleague from India loved the Sushi a la Nippon and green team ice cream so so much. Thank you for the excellent food as always.
Authentic Japanese restaurant in Manhattan. Sushi and Saba was so nice.
Restaurant Nippon has been at the top of the classical Japanese restaurant scene in New York for over half a century for a very good reason. While it doesn’t have the star appeal of Nobu or the niche gastronomic panache of Masa, Nippon was one of the very first NYC introductions to the full Japanese dining tradition, and 56 years on remains one of the best. For a traditional, exquisite, quiet, romantic or business meal, this is a wonderful choice. They have their own soba farm in Canada, the most attentive Japanese service in New York, and an elegant, understated dining room. (Trivia: since Japan Airlines began flying, Nippon has catered their first class Japanese meals out of New York, and they’re still doing it!)
This was a lunch with a friend who is also a work colleague. Excellent food and I loved the quiet of the restaurant. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more considerate. The food was excellent. Only quibble was that it was on the pricey side. The restaurant was as neat and meticulously kept as I've ever seen, including what we could see of the kitchen, as we were seated near the sushi bar. The price will make me keep it to special occasions, but I'll enjoy it when I do go.
Nippon on E 52nd has always been our local sushi place. It never disappoints. Excellent sushi, reasonable prices and a quiet environment for business discussions.
I cannot say enough great things about this place. The food was absolutely delicious. The service that was provided to us was top notch! I would find it hard pressed to find a better place than this in New York City. And this is coming from people that have been to the finest French restaurants finest Italian places and finest steakhouses in the city. Highly recommended!
Food and the service was extraordinary. I would recommend this place if you would like to eat authentic Japanese foods.
Nippon is my favorite Japanese restaurant in NYC. The food and service are outstanding.
Great sukiyaki cooked at our table. Very friendly staff.
Simply the best!
