Since 1963, we have been offering the best of traditional edo-mae (Tokyo) style Japanese dishes from Sukiyaki and Tempura to Sushi and multi-course Kaiseki.
A restaurant of firsts, Nippon was the first Japanese restaurant to serve Sushi in NYC, and made global headlines when founder successfully petitioned the FDA to allow fugu-blowfish to be imported to the U.S. Nippon is also the birthplace of the Beef Negimayaki and many other dishes that are now standard fare in Japanese restaurants around the world. In addition, Nippon makes its own premium quality ni-hachi soba-noodles and presses its own tofu.

Tasty fugu sashimi, worth a try!!! Nice services..
This is an outstanding restaurant. But tonight, we felt (although the restaurant was not too busy) that the food was rushed at us in an effort to get us out quickly. My wife was still eating her first course when the second was shoved at her. The second cooking of our beef was tough. Will we go back? YES
Just 👍 great. Simply great place.
Beef tongue was excellent. Sashimi was yummy’ Kamonabe was fun and delicious.
You don’t go here for this, but don’t miss the Udon. We ordered it on a whim and were fighting for the leftover noodles. Skip the rare and poisonous Fugu sushi, definition not worth it. Sushi and nigiri were great. Tempura was soso. Service was outstanding.
We went for Christmas Eve dinner and had high expectations. While the staff appear to be friendly, they tend to sell only the most expensive items on the menu like Sake and fish. Staters were greet but the main course was absolutely below par and then some repeat starters were not made with the same passion. Absolutely worthless place
The service was amazing. The people were lovely and the food quality was very outstanding. You should definitely try the tempura!
Very nice place. People were very attentive and polite.
Excellent food and service.
This is a NYC classic that has been consistently excellent for decades.
I have been to Japan dozens of times, and I also regularly visit a variety of Japanese restaurants in the States. While there are a lot of restaurants that offer sushi and tempura, not many offer shabu shabu, kaiseki and fugu sushi (only authorized importer of fugu in the US) at the same time! Food quality is excellent, and the flavors and smells are authentic Japanese. There are a lot of excellent Japanese restaurants in this town, but Nippon clearly stands out from the crowd.
Great service and great authentic menu
Nippon has served the best Japanese food in NYC for many , many years. Always provides excellent service and quality Japanese food !
The restaurant was very authentic and all of the waiting staff and owners were super nice!!! Food was great!!
We have been here many times. The service and food are exceptionally good.
We will continue to return.
Great experience! Best sushi on the east side of NYC!
Just perfect. The food, the service and all the attentions that we received was excellent.
Our favorite Japanese restaurant in Manhattan. The first time my father took me here was over twenty years ago and we have always enjoyed our meals here ever since. Great atmosphere and EXCELLENT service. Terrific dishes as well. Definitely highly recommend.
Updated décor. Chose table purposefully when reserving; was shunted to bar. Tempura oilier than I remembered
Nice service and good food
Excellent as we have come to expect from this gem.
Food was not good at all. Sushi was good but cooked food sucked. Too bad. Exceptional service
Bento box was exceptional. Wonderful flavors.
This is a wonderful restaurant. Entire staff was courteous and our waiter went above and beyond. Food was absolutely delicious...I recommend the Beef Sukiyaki and the Godzilla Curry
Wonderful menu with a wide variety of delicious Japanese food and drink. Lovely and peaceful atmosphere. Attentive service. Absolutely recommend.
The food here is always very reliably excellent. I am sure I will enjoy it every time I come here.
Very comfortable service.
Food was superb.
Everything was perfect.
Spent extra money for the good drinks.
Ha, ha, ha !
Amazing experience, food and hospitality! It was my mother’s birthday and they remembered to say happy birthday using her first name right when we walked in. She felt so incredibly special. Attention to detail 10/10! Food was incredible, sushi was so fresh, and teriyaki salmon was so made so well, unlike I’ve ever had before. The hospitality was warm and inviting- felt like you were at an upscale relative’s house for dinner-amazing! The staff all greeted us on the way out as well. Truly memorable experience!
Very limited lunch menue. Was looking forward to ordering from extensive menue but was unable to. Resigned to ordering alot of sushi rolls, salad, and upon only to be disappointed that one shrimp in seafood upon was not fresh. Left with a bad bitter taste.
Sat in a private booth--great value for $15 only!!!
Authentic atmosphere and fresh fish, very quick service allows for a business meal.
We had such a wonderful time! The food was absolutely divine, and the staff was wonderful. We liked that this was a "local place" where the staff knew the families that came in AND the food was top notch. We did a Kaiseki menu--each course was beautiful and delicious. Our favorites were the sashimi (the tuna in particular) and the beef fillet. Okay, the lobster was great as well (and the duck and the soba...). The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. We look forward to going back.
Incredible omakase menu!
Nippon is one of the very few classical Japanese restaurants in New York that prides itself on a full, seasonal, kaiseki experience. Great service, great food!
Excellent as always!
Very expensive. Good quality of food but very expensive
What an incredible dining experience at Restaurant Nippon. They do everything right- the quality of the food, the pleasant staffs & the professional services. That's the reason that it has been a successful establishment after all these years. Highly recommend!
The miso soup was good but was a tiny portion, and to me, was too brief a dining experience. The fish and vegetable Tempura was very good. When I am in a fish restaurant, I usually do not order a dish with shrimp in it because they are often pre-cooked. Here, in this Japanese restaurant, they were very tasty, and apparently not pre-cooked. The vegetables were tasty as well as the shrimp.
Always reliable with excellent food and service. I am here once a week for business meals. All my clients and colleagues want to come back after they come once.
Wonderful! I had a wonderful lunch outdoors at Restaurant Nippon. The service was impeccable as always and the food was delicious. The outdoor setup is lovely and private and I felt safe eating there. I always have a great, authentic experience at Restaurant Nippon.
