Since 1963, we have been offering the best of traditional edo-mae (Tokyo) style Japanese dishes from Sukiyaki and Tempura to Sushi and multi-course Kaiseki.
A restaurant of firsts, Nippon was the first Japanese restaurant to serve Sushi in NYC, and made global headlines when founder successfully petitioned the FDA to allow fugu-blowfish to be imported to the U.S. Nippon is also the birthplace of the Beef Negimayaki and many other dishes that are now standard fare in Japanese restaurants around the world. In addition, Nippon makes its own premium quality ni-hachi soba-noodles and presses its own tofu.

Everything was excellent!
Lovely place and very authentic I went there to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday the staffs are very friendly and good service .... can’t wait to go back there again
The food was delicious and service was very courteous. We had a course meal and everyone of 6 dishes were delicious.
The best Japanese food
I would go there everyday
It is everything it is made out to be
This is traditional Japanese cuisine at its finest. The sukiyaki is worth traveling for, and the house made soba noodles are the best in the city. The ambiance is dated, and the service sometimes a bit unsure. Still the food is superb and never fails to deliver.
Nice people but I had the back cod and it was Tiny. The service was just off. My friend ordered the vegetable tempura but they brought shrimp. My dinner was supposed to come with a miso so soup that they never brought it out. However they were nice people maybe everything’s off because of the pandemic?
Decent food and good service. Atmosphere is tradition Japanese. Wine and its selection was not that great. The place smelled like smoke, I don't know who and where was smoking you could really smell it. Chop sticks were cheap, -- I got splinter from using it. Overall was good.
La mejor experiencia, la atención insuperable! La comida de primera. El restaurant espectacular!!!
What an extraordinary dining experience at the restaurant Nippon. We ordered the Spring season kaiseki 6-courses meal. Each course was savory & sensational. It was such a treat to dine there!
It was delicious and we had the best waiter!
Food was amazing and the service was great as well.
Awesome! Fabulous! Everything was indeed superb, authentic Japanese Restaurant! And also they are providing thoroughgoing safety measures.
This meal was outstanding the service was outstanding just a wonderful experience I loved it and I can’t wait to go back and bring my friends. That Japanese pastry was out of this world The soba salad with the most delicious tofu and the Sashimi was so fresh the tuna just melted in your mouth the best we ever hang.
Wonderful traditional authentic ryori
The food is very good. Authentic Japanese. Good value. We ate at the outdoor tables. The ambience it's nice but it could be a bit more refined (plastic flowers and tablecloth are easy to be replaced by real ones!)
Excellent service and the food is divine. I’m not sure what is in the dressing of the soba salad but it’s sooo good
Good food and great service
A tour to Japan without leaving the country. A true Kanseki experience. Dishes are beautifully presented and the flavor is perfectly well balanced. The tables are with good distance from each other. Staff are attentive. Lovely decor. We really enjoy our dinner here and will come back again.
Authentic Japnese delicious foods.
Sushi set was excellent.
The food as incredible. Very fine traditional Japanese restaurant. I wish I had know about that restaurant before ! What really stood out for us was the service! The food was delicious but the service is one of the best service I experienced in years! We were to celebrate my daughter’s 6th birthday and it’s really not a typical restaurant where you can go with children as it’s fine Japanese cuisine but my kids love this kind of food; yet the attention provided to us and our children was incredible. The waiter and hostess were very knowledgeable about the menu and how to match it to our needs! I can’t wait to back with some friends next time!
Food was bad. Fishy, hard rice, salmon was not grilled it was over cooked, and thereby hard.
The best sushi experience ever even with teenagers
Absolutely amazing. Best sushi in Midtown East.
Their food and service are outstanding. The outdoor seating is in a four sided hut with open windows and doors, and partitions between tables. We were near the door so felt like there was good airflow. The heating was overhead electric heating, which was effective enough to take our heavy coats off - which was a nice change for outdoor dining in winter!
Amazing food, especially the soba salad. Also consistently excellent service.
I was pleasantly surprised by the tasty dishes. The tofu in dashi was a stand out for us. We ate outside although the tents are 3/4 sided. I would have felt more comfortable with more air flow. The service was excellent, friendly and super safe! Went in to use restroom and it was impeccably clean. Definitely will return!
Really nicely set up for outdoor dining, electric heaters made it very comfortable. Service is always excellent.
Una Jyu lunch is delicious, service is excellent!
Excellent food and clean , organized restaurant! Very professional service.
In a time of a pandemic- Nippon came through. Alex- probably the greatest waiter who has ever served. The food, atmosphere, and staff were beyond lovely. If you’re looking for a safe place to dine as well as having some amazing food nippon is your place. I will deff be returning and telling all my friends and family to go. Please ask for Alex, he is the waiter from heaven. If I could give more than five stars I would.
Great food and service. Especially nice outdoor seating
Super authentic Japanese food. I lived in Japan and rarely get to see some of the items that they have on their menu, which is extensive. Everything tasted super flavorful and fresh, and the service was really warm and friendly. Perfect social distancing and spotless clean.
Very traditional Japanese restaurant. I would definitely go again!!!
First time going to Nippon, I highly recommend. The food was delicious!
I am Japanese guy living in NY and it serves most legitimate taste of Japanese cuisine.
Beautiful restaurant - the very first Japanese restaurant to debut in NYC. Service was fantastic food was beautifully presented and delicious. Temperature checks done upon entry and all staff wore gloves, masks, and even visors. Highly recommended and definitely will return soon. The sukiyaki and the inaniwa plus chef selection of sashimi were my favorites.
Great atmosphere if you enjoy traditional Japanese dining! Menu was tough to navigate. But the Japanese culture and experience was phenomenal.
Restaurant Nippon is fantastic! I’ve been multiple times and it truly is an authentic Japanese dining experience. Their customer service, attention to detail and quality of food is perfect. I highly recommend this place.
