My husband and I went there for the 2nd time and for the 2nd time it was bad service. It was slow, maybe a handful of people in the bar, and no one in the dining . For such a nice place they were super casual, borderline nonshalant about seating us (told us to go sit wherever in the bar). No we're here for dining room. We ordered drinks -- which took way to long come to us.
We ordered our dinner (ribeye to share, prepared medium). When it arrived it was already cut (not over the moon for them to cut it for me), the steak was charred on the outside, super thin, and cooked well done. My husband doesn't like to make a scene (neither do I), but I told her I would expect this kind of steak from Applebee's, not from a fancy restaurant in downtown Minneapolis and I further told her that it wasn't worth the $34 that we were paying for it. DID I MENTION THAT WE WERE ALMOST ENTIRELY DONE WITH THE POTATO, ASPARAGUS, AND SALAD BEFORE SHE DAINED TO COME OVER TO SEE HOW WE WERE DOING!!!!! AND DID I MENTION THAT THE PLACE WAS PRACTICALLY EMPTY, SO WHY SHE DIDN'T SEE THE STEAK ON TWO PLATES ON THE SIDE OF OUR TABLE THE ENTIRE MEAL AND DIDN'T COME OVER.
The manager came over, apologized (he should've comped the meal), told us the chef was preparing another ribeye (gave some crappy excuse about cut of a ribeye, like I don't even know what one is supposed to look and taste like). It's been a while since I've had such bad service as enough to call over a manager, but he didn't even offer dessert on them, or another round of drinks, NOTHING. Just some lame excuse to defend his crappy meal. We finally got a really nice cut of ribeye cook perfectly. It better not be because we had a Groupon.
If they don't step up their service and staff, they're going to close and I wouldn't be a bit surprised.
Food was average, the restaurant was beautiful and the server was awesome.
Nice atmosphere. Food was ridiculously overpriced. Service was terrible. Waiter needed deodorant.
Had an amazing time. We were a few min late. I had tried to call but no one answered as we arrived and stated we had reservations they New ya by name. Said we have a nice bar table area u might like it was super nice. Waitress was great. And over all just really enjoyed our time there. Hamburgers were yum although a tad to greasy it squirted all over and stained my top
You might want to think twice about dining here. There was nothing special about the food, service or atmosphere. I had a Groupon I had to use here and it still cost us 60 dollars! Wish I could find something nice to say but to be honest, there are tons of restaurants where your money and time would be better spent, or better yet, pick something up and stay home.
I got the salmon. It was very dry and over cooked. Have been there before. It was our last choice since it was the holiday season and most of the area restaurants were booked for parties and celebration dinners. I'll search earlier next year.
Great service and excellent experience.
Limited dinner menu options but the flatbreads were spectacular.
It's a nice quiet place. Food is very good but the menu is small. Cocktails are excellent
Restaurant was not busy, but it still took an hour to get food from time of seating - two salads and a bowl of soup. No explainations till we were done , at which point they comped meal stating computers were down.
Extremely long wait for food. Our server was absent, and said nothing about the reason for the long wait nor offered nothing. A manager then delivered two of our four meals and told us their computer went down for about two hours (that would have been good information to know!), they were working off paper tickets, and asked what else else were missing, and again, offered nothing. This was extremely disappointing to me because this is a facility that I schedule have work meetings and events.
Enjoyed a delicious dinner at Restaurant Max where our server (Brittany) was friendly and attentive. The handsome dining room was nearly empty (on a Friday evening), likely due to an exodus from the city for the Labor Day weekend. The bar was lively with patrons, and there was also a family party in one of the private dining rooms. Spouse ordered chicken marsala which was wonderful and served over polenta. I had broiled walleye, prepared and seasoned expertly, accompanied by a medley of pickled vegetables (asparagus, carrot, onion, cauliflower) and roasted potatoes. A very fine evening.
I was totally shocked when we got to Max. There were maybe 8 people total in the restaurant. The menu was very light, too light. Instead of dinner, we had drinks, "$16.00 each," and left.
Food was very ordinary and not worth the price charged. Large restaurant with about 15 customers, including us. Waitress was very good and not over attentive.
It is never a good sign when you can easily get a reservation on a Friday night when others are fully booked, that is how we ended up here. When we arrived, we were told the dining room was closed due to staffing shortages, and to grab a place in the bar area. That was inconvenient, but not terrible. The only good thing after that was our drinks. The food was flavorless and overpriced. Not a good experience. I will not be going back, nor will I allow anyone I like to eat here. It's a great location and great space, too bad it misses the mark in so many ways.
The only good thing about Max was the wine and beer we had for dinner. The chicken wild rice soup was bland, the chicken marsala was cold and overly sweet, and the margarita flatbread was soggy. We were very happy that we had a Groupon to the restaurant because it was so disappointing.
Food was fairly good, but the shrimp in my sandwich was overcooked and a tail was left on. Two in my party commented to the waiter about their drink tasting odd, and rather than just apologize and fix it, he got defensive, made excuses and then slammed the replacement drinks on the table. Unprofessional.
This place is a joke. Even with Groupon it cost us $80 with no drinks for 2 and the food was inedible
Very poor food quality & over priced. Won't be going there again!
Very quiet on Mother's Day lunch but was nice .. food was good and we as a nice time . No hustle and bustle
Attend happy hours and lunches here. Happy is the best with great deals and excellent service. Lunch had been having spotty serve - long wait to be waited on, rare water refill, only saw our server twice. Food is good with excellent portions.
i wasnt wow'd and for spending $140 on dinner for two I wanted something to stand out. We had the breakfast buffet the next morning and if it wasn't for our, lovely waitress it would have been a bust
Food was cold, but didn't send it back. Won't go again.
Fabulous French cuisine that was an enjoyable evening out with friends. Food was delectable service was impeccable and we will definitely return.
It's a really neat bar. But they forgot about my reservation so we ended up sitting in a closed section, my suggestion as there wasn't anywhere else, but then the wait staff seemed to keep forgetting us.
It was a really nice dining experience. Went with my coworkers and had a nice table in the corner to enjoy our lunch and exchange Christmas gifts.
I normally absolutely love the food at Max. This time was a bit different. The scallops were the best around, but they haven't been on the menu in some time. I had the walleye, it came with broccoli rabe, which was tough, bitter and inedible. My husband had a hamburger and sweet potatoe fries, which was good. The server never asked if we wanted desert or something else to eat/drink, just brought the bill. When I told her how bitter the rabe was she indicated it was the second time already that night she had heard that (we ate early at 6:30ish), and said "I'll tell Jim" - that's it, nothing more was said or done about it. Considering a huge portion of the plate was comprised of the rabe, I was surprised. The potatoes were good that I had, and the walleye was good - but served without any lemon wedge or sauce. Granted, I could have asked, but the server wasn't around a lot...My opinion of Max is unfortunately changing...
We loved the decor with the huge pillars and intricate lighting. My crab cakes were delicious and well cooked, the Brussels sprouts were good too with lots of bacon in them. The pork loin is very tender.
Mediore food and service. Don't go out of your way to try this one.
A quiet spot for lunch. It is off the beaten path in Downtown Minneapolis, but the food is always good, and there is always a table. So worth a stop, or simple to go in a spot not everyone is at.
It is highly overpriced for the food quality, you can get a better burger from five guys ... at least the staff at 5 guys smiles
The beautifully restored and elegant dining room area at Max's was closed off during our Saturday evening visit. We were told to seat ourselves anywhere we wished, in the bar area, but it did not have the classy ambiance of the dining room. So, our evening was a bit of a disappointment.
Our small group enjoyed our business lunch and we had excellent care and service. Everyone seemed to really enjoy what they ordered, and we'd like to come back just to try your desserts next time! Thanks for a great lunch!
Limited selections, but all are delicious
Lovely interior ... very nice place to have meeting.
the restaurant was slow when we got there. i think there were maybe 10 people total. my husband and I were there for a romantic dinner and while the waitress was amazing......the food was blah. the steak was super fatty, the potato was obviously made well ahead of time as it tasted kinda old. the deserts we ordered to go were super small for the price and the butterscotch pudding was actually kinda gross. my husband got the same dinner i did and he thought it was ok. he likes a fattier cut of meat but he did wonder how old the potatoes were. overall we had a good time but the food was a miss.
The rigatoni and also the crab cakes were fantastic
Good place for a working lunch m. Our server was on top of it and recognized when to jump in and when not to based on conversation we were having.
We were seated on time. Food was good . Convenient location for our guests. Valet parking was convenient.
The service was very slow on this visit and not very attentive. My tuna melt was not really "melted" - it was cold. We were allowed to stay as long as we wanted, which was good as we had a lot of chatting and catching up to do. All in all, an off day at Max but will not keep me from going again.
