In June of 2005 Humberto and Lorena opened the doors to Lorena's a BYOB in the heart of Maplewood Village.
As an alumnus of the C.I.A. and a graduate from New Jersey's top kitchens, Chef Campos will be offering a menu deeply rooted in French technique and inspired by the seasons of the Garden State.

The reviews on this place made us have to try it. Very happy we did. From the moment we sat down we felt we were treated specially by our server and he was just the right amount of attentive. He knew everything about any menu question we asked and was very pleasant. Now the food. The chef sent out an amuse bouche to all customers this night of a small elegant shot glass type of glass with a warm spring pea soup with a special flavoring on top. Delectable! The bread with the fruit and nuts was much better than the sourdough but it was nice we could get a piece of each. We shared the crepe stuffed with lump crab meat and a lovely sauce. They separated it in the kitchen which I also appreciate and it had large pieces of crab and the sauce was just so light for a creamy sauce. I had the duck with a confit of some sort. I know I am not doing the descriptions justice and I can't even remember all the lovely ingredients within every special entree! My friend had the venison and short rib dish. We each tried each others and this was cooked to perfection as was the duck. For dessert, we shared the apple tart with homemade ice cream and were treated to a little something from the chef with our teas which was a berry sort of concoction, also delicious. A wine store across the street makes it easy to have something for the BYOB. Not cheap, but boy do you get what you pay for here. Excellent on all measures.

Lorena's is without equal in New Jersey. Chef Campos is a creative master. The crab-mushroon crepe is original and a superb blend of flavors and textures. The halibut was done perfectly with a wonderful potato puree with fresh peas. The restaurant is welcoming in its appearance and in its staff. The art work is excellent and worth viewing. Lighting soft and tasteful. This is a great dining experience: expensive, but well worth it.

My mother and I had a wonderful experince dining at Lorena's on Mother's Day. The food and service were outstanding. We will definitely be back!

People rave about Lorena's, but I found that, although the food is good, the ambiance of the restaurant is not great--the sconces on the wall, the decor, etc., made the place feel like a hotel lobby or other similarly character-less place. The wait staff was excellent, but there's something depressing about eating food that's supposed to be exquisite in a setting is aesthetically lacking. I was disappointed.

if it was an option, i would give lorena’s 10 stars! from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything was superb. being a food snob from ny who recently moved to nj, my vocabulary doesn’t contain enough flattering adjectives to describe our dinner, the service and ambience of the restaurant.

This was one of the best meals I have ever had out. The restaurant is classy and charming. The service was wonderful. Our waiter was friendly, professional, and knew the menu and wines well. He also made excellent suggestions. We were never rushed and enjoyed truly wonderful meals. The food presentation was perfect at each course, and the portions were well appointed. We started with fresh oysters which were delicious. I had the mushroom crab crepe as an appetizer and the flavors complemented each other and made for a delightful starter. It was not over powered by a sauce and the crepe was light as could be. I highly recommend the artic char entrée; although the other entrees at our table were equally enjoyed - the venison, the duck and the scallops. To end a wonderful meal on another high note - order the lava cake. Amazingly delicious. We are already planning on going back!

I'm vegetarian and the chef prepared an off the menu dish based on things that I like and vegetables in season. I was very pleased that they were able to accommodate. My husband had the crabmeat crepe and halibut for dinner and loved both dishes. Would certainly like to come back again.

This was our first time at Restaurant Lorena. I made the reservation for our anniversary based on my son's recommendation. The service was very good - our server was always in sight in case we needed him, but he wasn't looking over our shoulder all night. The server also wasn't pretentious, which can happen in some higher end restaurants. The menu is on the limited side, so if you are looking for a place with a 20 page menu this is not it. The food was delicious and presented beautifully. It was so nice to be in a restaurant where you could actually have a conversation without screaming. My only disappointment was that creme brulee wasn't on the dessert menu, however that wasn't the restaurant's fault. Would definitely return for another dinner.

We’ve been to Lorena’s many times, whether we have something to celebrate or not; this time was my husband’s 65th birthday. He ordered oysters, salmon tartare and we both had the short rib and filet duo (his medium, mine medium-rare and each was perfect), and I started with the duck confit Thai salad. Dessert was apple tart and hazelnut cake, plus an extra treat, candle included, in honor of the occasion. What can I say, every course was wonderful - as usual. Service was comfortably attentive without hovering. Outstanding dining experience overall.

Always a great special occasion place, we tried the mid-week prix fixe menu. It was just wonderful and we hope it becomes a set part of their dining experience. It will expand our visits.

We have always enjoyed our everything at Lorena's/ Food and service is as good as it gets. Atmosphere is quite sparse and could be a bit stuffy for some. We love it!
Three negatives this time around: 1. Party of 4 at the next table were a bit loud. 2. Espresso was tepid, had to send it back and ask for another cup. 3. It was a bit tacky when the Chef/Owner visited the only other table in the dining room at the time and gave the table of 4 each a foie gras sampler. (We certainly did not expect Chef to give us the foie gras as well, but it would have been the courteous thing to do to simply say hello to us.)

As good as it gets. Started with a dozen fresh delicious oysters with an unusual dipping sauce that paired up perfectly. Appetizers: beet salad and fois gras prepared to perfection. Scallops and a duo of filet mignon and short ribs were the entrees beautifully presented and cooked. Dessert: a deconstructed banana split and because we had mentioned that it was our anniversary they also brought a lovely panna cotta with a candle in it. Our server Mario was attentive and warm. We will return!

As before when we have dined here, another EXCEPTIONAL MEAL.
Every item on the menu is delicious and artistically presented.
My wife will always have a dish from the ocean. She had the Main Diver Scallops
My only difficulty is deciding what to order for my main course. I would enjoy everything offered. This time, I savored the Venison Sirloin. I was as tender as top notch filet of mignon.

We shared two first course.appetizers: Market Salad of Organic Baby Lettuces
Crumbled Blue Cheese, Pear, Grapes, Cashews
Lemon-Olive Oil Dressing
and the " fan favorite" Warm Crêpe of Lump Crabmeat and Wild Mushrooms.
The freshly baked bread offering are also wonderful.
And of course, the wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable staff with the addition of new server Andrew added to our dining pleasure.
We'll back at the end of this month.
It's no wonder that Lorena's is listed regularly as one of the best restaurants not Just in in New Jersey but in the Entire U.S.A.!!!!!!!

We have lived in Maplewood for a few years and finally made it to Lorena's to celebrate a birthday- our only regret is it took us this long to go! The staff is wonderful, the food is DELICIOUS, the portions are perfect, and it's a great ambiance! We will be back again soon!

Comfortable gem of a restaurant with excellent food. The service is comforting, unobtrusive, and precise. The atmosphere is perfect for occasions ranging from intimate to serious to relaxed and festive. When I sat down, I felt relaxed and in good hands. The menu is carefully curated so each dish is seasonal, simple, and beautiful without being "tweezer" food. BYOB, though the server is attentive to the wine glass. Parking can be an issue.

Lorenas has come down. Way too expensive for the quality. Very disappointed with the rush act and the lack of taste. We had rack of lamb which was so tasteless. The salad I had tasted like bagged lettuce. Once again poor. Will not be coming back.

Make no mistake, this is not a French style restaurant serving small elegant portions artfully arranged with gossamer ingredients. The food , however, is quite tasty and well made. But it is “slab” restaurant, ie, the protein portions are large pieces of meat or fish. Main complaint: waiters are pleasant but hard to understand. Also my wife’s tights were ripped by an exposed nail under the chair. We pointed it out but the staff took no responsibility other than change her chair. We “let it go”.
