There are no blenders, mixers, choppers, ice cream machines, deepfryers, burr sticks, nor anything else with a motor--nothing with a plug. Food machines with motors made possible an imbalance of diet that had never occurred before: we could suddenly fry enough food to make ourselves sick, we could preserve food longer than its last dangling vitamin. Refusing food-enabling machines is another way to keep the food honest, and in reasonable balance. There is not even a freezer. No perishable ingredient may travel further than a good, strong horse. The menu will move absolutely in lockstep with the seasons, as okra and eggplant taper off and leafy greens move in, we must change ourselves tosuit the product--not the other way around. What is outside is inside.

Always a good experience and the menu never disappoints. You can always tell the roots of where this place derives its culinary treats.
The food was innovative and tasty. The service was excellent and attentive. However, I was not impressed by the beef, a part of it was so chewy that I could not eat it. Also, the timing of the courses was off. The restaurant was not that busy. There were 3 tables of 4 persons, us, and one other couple, lots of empty tables. On a scale of 1-5, I’d have to give it a 3, maybe 3.5 in comparison to meals we’ve had at other comparable restaurants. While the presentation(s) of the food was excellent, when one goes to a high end restaurant for the Chef’s menu, one expects a more detailed explanation of the food and how it was prepared. That didn’t happen for us. To be honest, we left somewhat disappointed. The coffee service was fun to watch and coffee was excellent.
The portion sizes for the 7 course tasting were ridiculously huge. I could barely even have a bite of the last few. The cold potato soup was incredible. Love the concept and great service.
I really wanted to love this place, however, that's not the case.
My wife and I went to this place for our 10 year anniversary. I figured it was a special occasion, so we could splurge a bit. We both got the tasing menu and we tried all of the dishes offered. Although we didn't have anything we didn't like, there was nothing that blew us away. The presentations were beautiful, but the taste was just ok. Also, unfortunately a couple of the dishes were very under seasoned (and there is no salt or pepper on the table), and one dish was very over salted. These are things that shouldn't happen at a fine dinning establishment. My last critique is for the wine pours, they were supposed to be 3OZ, but were way less than that.
Excellent food with attention to detail!
Environment was quiet and dim. Natural light came through the windows.
It’s prob better to go for dinner vs lunch to experience more of the cuisine.
Food was very good and well prepared, some food items were unusual but wonderful. Service was spot on. We had a relaxed meal and pleasant time.
Excellent in every way. I can't express how much we enjoyed our evening there.
Excellent restaurant, and we have dined in many of the top restaurants of the world. Had the seven course wine paired dinner, plus escargot. The escargot was some of the best we have ever had. If you like escargot, go here for that reason alone. Wine pairings were all good, but none was amazing. But I would not hesitate to do the wine pairings again. Wait staff was friendly and helpful. Quiet, comfortable space. Pricy but worth it.
Husband and I truly enjoyed our evening. We wanted to try something different. We did the chef's choice 7 course with wine pairing. The selections were amazing. My husband does not normally go for white wines but most the wines that were paired were white. The food and wine really complemented each other and he enjoyed them both. The other reviews say this place is 'an experience'. And that sums it up for us as well. An enjoyable experience. The staff was very friendly and helpful if you had any questions on the food or wine. There was no feeling of being rushed; it was laid back, relaxed atmosphere. I am glad we got to go while we were in town.
Michelin guide is not in Texas. Having eaten at Michelin rated restaurants in the U.S., Restaurant Gwendolyn would be rated as a three Michelin star establishment. Thank you for the great experience.
It was perfect from beginning to end. Each of the course was beautiful and delicious. I was constantly surprised. It was an experience that won’t soon leave me.
We had the wine pairings with 5 courses and loved everything about it. Presentation was creative and the food was delicious. It was a special night and nice contrast to all the tourist attractions down the river walk.
This restaurant is like visiting a world class art museum. The plating is always exquisite and not only do you get to marvel at the works of art they serve, you also get to eat them. 😆 what flavor! What planning! I love you Restaurant Gwendolyn.
Very creative menu and an adorable place but tiny tiny food!! You will leave hungry and it is not in-expensive.
Small restaurant with limited staff still execute at a very high level. Wait staff is friendly, unpretentious and knowledgeable. Food is top notch using all local ingredients prepared by hand (no electric food tools e.g. food processor). Wine list is not extensive but reflects a good variety of regions and types.
Restaurant Gwendolyn is a great exploration into food without the use of modern machines (i.e. mixers, blenders, etc). You have a couple of options when you dine here. A five or seven course tasting menu, a la carte, or charcuterie board that would feed you for your meal. My fiance and I went here for our anniversary dinner before seeing a show at the majestic. Due to time constraints we could not do their typical tasting menu so they helped tailor a tasting menu to us. Every bite was amazing and the fact that they source all of their produce and meat from a 150 mile radius I feel enhances the flavors and show the love and passion the staff and chefs have for the food their produce. I hope to go back to be able to experience their full tasting menu and not have to rush the amazing cuisine.
What a great experience food is great service is wonderful. My wife and I are both foodies and this is a perfect place to enjoy a great food adventure.... highly recommend
Everything at Gwendolyn was outstanding - from taking care of parking our car, to a wonderful table where real conversation was possible, to splendid food from the prix fixe menu, to a waiter totally attuned to every special need we had - all of us agreed it was the best restaurant meal any of us had had in years. Keep up the great tradition and good luck - you are a major addition to the San Antonio dining scene. Just fabulous.
Great fine dining experience really enjoyed the prix fix
It was wonderful. The food was so flavorful and the presentation beautiful. The wait staff were very attentive and outstanding.
We had a 7 course experience. It was a 3 hour marathon of excellent food and service. A bit much for us as we did not realize the time commitment. If you enjoy a wonderful long fine dining experience i recommend highly. Service is beyond compare. Maybe 12 tables - quaint little hidden hem.
Gwendolyn's was phenomenal. The staff was amazing and the food spectacular. Our table had a view of the water and a window into the kitchen which was fantastic to watch. Everyone was in perfect sync and the presentation of the tasting menu was marvelous. Would definitely recommend!
A great evening, the staff was friendly and attentive, the food was delicious, beautifully presented and interesting. It made for a wonderful birthday celebration for my wife that was enjoyed by our family immensely. Recommend Restaurant Gwendolyn for a great evening of food in a comfortable and friendly place.
Truly a great food experience, we went for the seven course wine pairing meal. The different species would explode in your mouth. A little pricey, but in my opinion well worth the money.
My wife and I decided to celebrate our anniversary with Restaurant Gwendolyn. It was an amazing treat. The menu said happy anniversary (nice touch). The wait staff is knowledgeable, courteous, prompt, and patient, without being pretentious nor arrogant. We felt comfortable asking questions about the food and wine choices, which were excellent. The flavors were unique and surprising, and the portions were great for the 5 course selections we made. Thanks for a great evening.
Only challenge was sitting outside. May say stay inside. Guy above cussing ridiculously. Vehicle noise. Food though makes up for it. A huge go!!!
Our second visit. This is a top level restaurant that matches anything in NYC or Paris. A very special place. Transports you to another world. Tops in San Antonio.
Good was outstanding and Lauren, our server, took care of us so well. Truly a culinary delight.
Everything was perfect about the evening except for one minor thing. We didn’t have time to indulge in the tasting menu so we went ala carte (Tobin Center performance). Food, wine and service were amazing. Best restaurant experience in San Antonio, bar none! Lovely ambiance! We will go there again and indulge in the tasting menu.
One minor complaint. We got to the restaurant and there was no one to take our car at valet parking. My date called, we drove around the block and there was someone to take our car. This should not happen.
So so. 2 meals served undercooked from tasting menu. But only sent back the main course fish. Trainee waiter.
Excelente comida y servicio. El tipo de música seria lo único q cambiaría
Amazing. Great new tastes and trys for the adventurous diner
Cosy old fashioned feel with excellent food and service.
a true dinning experience. The food was delicious, freshly prepared & worth every penny.
We really enjoyed this restaurant and our visit to San Antonio. Wait staff was very attentive. Co-owner helped come up with a menu that was dairy free for both of us. Entire meal was created to work around our restrictions. Very nice strawberry, coconut, granola, sorbet dessert! Highly recommended. Thanks!
Absolutely fabulous. We had the 5 course tasting menu and were seriously impressed. From the inventiveness of the tomato and strawberry gazpacho to the perfectly cooked beef and pork with excellently paired wines. Leaving with a taste of pink peppercorn sugar brittle. Great service, ambiance and location. A meal to remember.
Amazing food as always with exceptional service and attention to detail.
Great food, pretty pricey, but I am the frugal one in the family.
The only gripe is the awkwardness of the wait stafff. The restaurant was super quiet and only one other table was occupied when we first arrived (we were eating early). The wait staff seemed to be coming every few minutes to check on us throughout our 2.5 hour dinner (we did the 5 course meal, $75/person). It was awkward and hard to have a normal conversation.
First time there – will definitely be back again. A unique restaurant that has certainly earned its good reputation...
This was experience I have never had just phenomenal. Our server Andrea was just outstanding
