About Restaurant Gwendolyn
The concept of the restaurant is everything old school, using what they had and doing as they did before the break of the industrial revolution: approximately 1850. This was the last time that food was honest.
There are no blenders, mixers, choppers, ice cream machines, deep fryers, burr sticks, nor anything else with a motor--nothing with a plug. Food machines with motors made possible an imbalance of diet that had never occurred before: we could suddenly fry enough food to make ourselves sick, we could preserve food longer than its last dangling vitamin. Refusing food-enabling machines is another way to keep the food honest, and in reasonable balance. There is not even a freezer. No perishable ingredient may travel further than a good, strong horse. The menu will move absolutely in lockstep with the seasons, as okra and eggplant taper off and leafy greens move in, we must change ourselves tosuit the product--not the other way around. What is outside is inside.

I visited with my husband for my birthday. We ordered the 5 courses meal with coffee at the end served with the desert. We had an amazing experience. Food was exquisite! We highly enjoyed the broad variety of flavors and textures throughout the different courses. It was like a party in our mouths at every bite. Coffee was brewed at our table in a fancy coffeemaker. My husband and I really loved the coffee flavor. It makes a true difference when all the ingredients are locally grown. I highly recommend Restaurant Gwendolyn to whoever is looking to have a once in a lifetime experience!
Have dined at RESTAURANT GWENDOLYN since it opened before attending the symphony performance. The welcome from everyone is always very friendly and sincere. My last visit I chose the AFRICAN LAMB CHOP, HARISSA AND COUSCOUS. The flavor was outstanding and expertly paired by Jenn with Copertino Riserva 2008. The biggest surprise was bread pudding with ice cream flambe. The flame added a delicious crust.

Food was beautifully presented and helpful suggestions were made regarding wine. They have a fixe prix menu and a la carte, and they ensure you can get out in time to walk to the symphony or other nearby venues. Excellent service and scenic atmosphere, overlooking the river.
Food was great, service outstanding. We were pressed for time because of a show time and had to order ala carte. Not a good value for the price. Tiny portions, as you would expect for the type of cuisine. The 5 or 7 course pre fixe would be a much better deal. We’ll go back when we have more time to enjoy.
An under acknowledged gem in downtown San Antonio. Choose the patio in the right weather conditions. Staff very concerned about customer happiness. When I pointed out that the red wine was too warm they were distraught and found a cooler alternative.
If you stay in a downtown hotel, do try to visit this charming place.
This was my first time going for dinner (we frequent this location for lunch all the time). We didnhe 7 course option and everything was amazing. As we had no control over what came out, my wife and I both had food we probably would not have ordered on our own. The staff was amazing and while it is on the pricey side, it is well worth the cost. Everything used is within 150 miles so it is very fresh and nothing was “off”. Amazing gem in downtown SA.
I had a marvelous time with my wife for our 13th anniversary. We tried the five course meal. Each course was more splendid then the precursor. The chef's handiwork is evident in every detail of the dishes.
I have had the pleasure of eating all over the US and this was an amazing experience. The dishes were far superior to eateries in San Francisco and New York. I encourage all out of town guests to visit and try Gwendolyn and Chef Michael's creations.
Amazing service! Made changes to the tasting menu due to seafood allergy for us and a comp glass of champagne due to our 10 year anniversary. Could not say enough good things about the service. Was not too loud but could see it getting louder if it was busy. Very expensive so a nice treat every few years, and worth it!
This restaurant is an overrated gimmick. I get the idea of the place - preindustrial approach to food - but it's hard to buy in to the idea when there are wine refrigerators visible in the main room and music from mid 20th century piped in. One of our courses was wrapped in foil. And they're Definitely selective about their locally sourced food. Some items on the menu absolutely come from further than "local".
If we eat with our eyes, good luck, the place is pitch dark. I get ambience, but this was dark to the point of dysfunction. Our waiter had to pull out his iPhone flashlight to show us our food. The food is a gimmick as well. Overthought and too much an attempt to be clever. Pay more attention to flavors and less time with the silly themes that supposedly tie the tasting menu together.
Bottom line: We were completely underwhelmed, and borderline angry when we got our $300 bill. Felt like I'd been conned. Definitely NOT WORTH IT.
Gwendolyn has carved a niche for historically prepared food from within an 150 mile radius of San Antonio. It uses no electricity and relies on historical recipes and creativity in its food preparation and presentation. It has a slew of polite service personnel who can become a bit too intrusive when one simply wants to enjoy their dish. Food offerings are limited by freshness and season. The plated portions are small and expensive. Their wine list is extensive but also expensive. It is a restaurant where one dines seldom, so it seems geared for visitors rather than local residents. I wish the good restaurants in the city would be more accommodating to locals who have no expense accounts to pay for their dinners. I would return happily, but only if my bank account was flush.
Gwendolyn is a special place serving very well prepared "elegant" food. Not items you would find in any other restaurant. Supposedly, all preparation is made without electrical kitchen equipment. All is made in house and fresh each day. Atmosphere is old quaint elegant. Not a big restaurant and you can talk to each other at the table.
I would not recommend this restaurant. We went for restaurant week dinner. The theme for the 3 course meal was Christopher Columbus coming to America. They didn't exactly have fine dining on the ship or when they hit land. Portions of 2 courses were ridiculously small. The entree course was larger but tasteless. Boiled fish and garbanzo beans. My friend had to ask for salt so the fish had a little more flavor. One of my friends doesn't eat fish so she was forced to order the $55 tasting menu which consisted of 5 courses. Her meal wasn't much better than our $35 meals. One thing was good about the restaurant - the service. Our waiter and the other servers were excellent. If only the food was as good as the service.
Not our kind of place. Food lacked flavor, too bland for our tastes. We both ordered the 5 course selection and the best part was the lemon sorbet they served us to cleanse our palate between courses.
We were greatly disappointed since we had both heard good things about Restaurant Gwendolyn. We do not plan on returning.
Before our evening began we received a wonderful phone call from this establishment checking to see if anyone in our party had and food allergies or dietary needs . Later in the evening from the moment we walked into Restaurant Gwendolyn we knew we were about to experience something wonderful and it was definitely a wonderful time as the food, service, prep, presentation and all were top notch. 2 of us tried the chefs tasting menu while the other 2 tried the ala carte . No one was disappointed and everyone complimented their food that they were served and then came the out if this world coffee along with our dessert to which I can only say heaven found me tonight. The pricing isn't cheap and wouldn't expect it to be with the service and meal served, I will and would recommend this establishment to anyone seeking a special experience with food and ambiance. I shall return again and am thankful for the friend whom passed along this recommendation to me.
Seasonal local food prepared as if no modern luxuries exist (per their website pre-industrial revolution period; 1850's). Overall experience was excellent. We did the Tasting Menu 5 course plus an appetizer plate called "Cheesecuturie". Wife had a French rose wine and I had an aged stout beer. The wait staff was knowledgeable and personable. The food was excellent and the plating was incentive and inquisitive. Every course build upon the previous endeavor. Just an awesome place for foodies, couples, date night or special occasion. Wonderful atmosphere. Will be back in the winter, as the menu changes based on the season.
It is extremely overpriced and too precious. I paid $35 for to, very small--two small bites size, Bolivian empanadas that were just OK. The chimichuri sauce that accompanied was much better but the dough was pasty and nothing emotly as delicate and flaky as the real Bolivian empanada dough. And to top it they allowed the table behind me to have a meeting where one of the attendants was on the SPEAKER PHONE. I had never experienced that ever, maybe because it is extremely annoying. At least my waitress was very pleasant.
The restaurant, food and service were nice. We had tickets to an event at the Tobin Center, which they knew, and made it to the show on time. The program for the event had a page in their with an advertisement for the restaurant, offering 10% off of bill if you had tickets to an event at the Tobin Center...We were not made aware of this despite the fact that the staff at the restaurant knew we were going to an event there after dinner. I feel that if an establishment advertises something, they should inform their customers. It's not about the money. They would have gotten a positive reaction from me if they told us, as opposed to a negative reaction after finding this out after the fact. This is just my opinion and will dictate recommending this place or not to someone else, I spent a lot of money there that night...
Perfection across the board. The meal was exquisitely amazing. The staff was polished, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The ambiance was quiet and romantic. All in all one of the most enjoyable meals I have had across the many continents I have traveled.
We were greeted by our wonderful waitress Ayesha (?) and our anniversary dinner was a special evening from beginning to end. We selected the 5-course tasting menu beginning with the cheesecauterie, and our adventure in dining grew with each course, anticipating each dish to come. To add to the ambience of our evening we were seated at the Chefs Table which only added to our experience. Many thanks to Chef Michael and his staff. They could not have made our evening more special. We will remember this evening for a long time to come.
