There are no blenders, mixers, choppers, ice cream machines, deepfryers, burr sticks, nor anything else with a motor--nothing with a plug. Food machines with motors made possible an imbalance of diet that had never occurred before: we could suddenly fry enough food to make ourselves sick, we could preserve food longer than its last dangling vitamin. Refusing food-enabling machines is another way to keep the food honest, and in reasonable balance. There is not even a freezer. No perishable ingredient may travel further than a good, strong horse. The menu will move absolutely in lockstep with the seasons, as okra and eggplant taper off and leafy greens move in, we must change ourselves to suit the product--not the other way around. What is outside is inside.
Incredible experience!! Heath and Chef Andreas made it an unforgettable evening. Food, ambiance and exceptional service mad this one of my top dining experiences all time!
We came here on a recommendation from a friend in Houston. The food was fabulous and seasoned to perfection with unique flavors. Everything was cooked flawlessly from oysters, shrimp, pork cheek, and rabbit. Being able to valet park was another big plus since the weather was 102 outside. We called on our way to dinner and they had a valet waiting for us out front. This is a very small restaurant downtown and it was obvious that the chef loved Creating food on a superb level using throwback hand created delicacies in the tradition prior to 1850. Make reservations and enjoy the experience, we did!
The entire dining experience was just wonderful! The service was friendly, professional, knowledgeable and amazing, the food was delicious and unique. We have been wanting to try this restaurant for years and finally did it! After a wonderful meal, we ordered a German coffee siphon. It was just so fun to see and even better to taste!
Very pleasant experience. Small size made for great service and low noise atmosphere. Food was excellent. Be ready to make an evening of it.
$28 dollars for 2 ravioli....no sides, ridiculous....wish I had taken a picture The food was very tasty and the service excellent but after dropping $250 on food alone, our party of 4 had to go out afterwards to get something else to eat (two of us ordered the 5-course meal and you'd get more food if you simply ordered the charcuterie appetizer). Bottom line is that if you're looking to make an impression, this is a fine choice. If you're looking to have a normal sized meal, there are many better options on the Riverwalk.
Absolutely Fantastic! The menu changes often so I am already looking forward to another trip. We had the table that looks into the kitchen and over the riverwalk. The staff was excellent and open to conversation and very knowledgeable on the wine pairings, the food, and restaurant history. This was an amazing food experience with nothing but exciting, high quality and well thought out dishes.
Fantastic. Totally awesome!!! Beautiful place for a special occasion!!
Great Service and Great food! First time and it won’t be the last.
This restaurant prepared and served the finest meal we have experienced here in San Antonio. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute and every taste.
Service and Presentation were outstanding!
Phenomenal execution of a very important and eminently interesting philosophy towards cooking. Not just local, not just pre-industrial, not just haute cuisine, but all three done with exacting standards and great respect towards each ingredient which fulfills the desire of Mr. Sohocki to make his food honest.
Great experience and amazing food!!
Wonderfully delicious culinary experience. Don't come expecting to leave after an hour. 3 hours of foodie bliss, minimum 😁👍
Fantastic from the start. An intimate setting in the middle of San Antonio, low lighting, whisper quiet with soft music playing. Tasting menu was wonderful and the petite “cheese cuterie” platter was enough for 4 people. An excellent experience with great food and wine
I always have trepidation when I choose to dine in a decidedly upscale restaurant alone. Will I feel out of place, will it be weird? Usually I choose to eat somewhere there is a bar I can sit at but, reading reviews of Restaurant Gwendolyn and my love of farm to table
Food was amazing, staff was friendly and professional. Can’t wait to visit again.
Ft Worth, TX
Awesome experience. The food and service was great!
Two words: mind blowing. Food was amazingly delicious, scrumptious, yum yum yum! Best food I’ve ever eaten. Service was spectacular. The bread is to die for. Presentation was great.
Staff and seating was great. Several of the dishes were amazing while others missed the mark (meat dishes were either dry or bit chewy but still had solid flavor) but everything else was fantastic.
Truly wonderful dinner experience. Two sisters enjoyed 5 course menu with courses wine pairings. Waiter was most helpful with menu along with pleasant sense of humor.
Table overlooked beautiful riverwalk.
OUR MEAL WAS DELIGHTFUL AND OUR SERVER HEATH WAS VERY WELL VERSED. ALL IN ALL, I AM PLANNING TO RETURN WITH MY BRIDE OF 30 YEARS. WE BOTH LOVED THE FIVE COURSE MEAL AND HAD A LOVELY DINNER IN A PERFECT SETING. WE NOT ONLY HAD A GREAT MEAL BUT WE HAD TIME BETWEEN COURSES TO TALK AS WELL.
We really enjoyed out evening. We started with the meat and chees charcuterie board which was fantastic. We followed up with the 5 course tasting menu which was all excellent. My only complaint, I wish they had a full bar. Over all a great experience!
Dining at Restaurant Gwendolyn is not just dining out, the unique restaurant provides an exquisite experience in service and food. We chose the Chef's Choice Seven Course Meal with Wine Pairings, and the food and the wine delighted us all. The service staff, led by Jennifer, is beyond belief - we have eaten at Michelin starred restaurants that did not attend to detail like the staff at Restaurant Gwendolyn. We have eaten meals at restaurants owned by chefs with the names Boulud, Bourdain, Batali, Flay, Puck, and Morimoto and this meal was more delicious and more memorable than some of those meals. Jennifer called to verify any allergies or food aversions before our arrival. They know your name and every course is served with excellent explanations of both the food and the wine. We forgot a hat, and they called to let us know what time they would be there the next day so that we could pick it up at our convenience. I have Celiac's, and I know with confidence that nothing I ate had touched wheat - and the almond flour chocolate cake they whipped up for my dessert...oh, my, it was sinful deliciousness. I had a piece of mackerel that although beautifully cooked and seasoned, was a bit too bony, and that was the only hiccup for all of us in the meal. Every wine enhanced and enriched the food. Every course was plated uniquely and with magnificent design of the chosen service piece to the presentation of the food. We will be back the next time we are in San Antonio because this experience was more than worth the money.
Great food but definitely overpriced. Service was great.
Out waiter was awesome! And th food was great!
Restaurant Gwendolyn is by far the most pleasurable and surprising meal in the Texas Hill Country. Each curse is photogenic and has a special appeal. The Quail Roulade and the Conejo Colorado were too good to believe both in presentation and in flavor. Restaurant Gwendolyn is always on our mid when we visit San Antonio.
Dining at Restaurant Gwendolyn was a wonderful experience. We chose the 5-course tasting menu and a bottle of wine. The food was unique, delicious and well portioned. As it began I worried that perhaps we wouldn't get enough food as the earlier portions were smaller, however by the time we were done it was obvious that the portioning had allowed us to enjoy all the courses. The service was extraordinary and since we were seated by the window to the kitchen we got the privilege of watching the chefs and the restaurant's unique preparation (no appliances that plugin are used). Highly recommended!
One of my favourite restaurants in North America. The tasting menu, service, ambiance and coffee are all awesome. It is a great way to spend an evening.
Great food and great service. Exactly what you would expect from a high end establishment. We let them know a dietary restriction and a timing issue up front and they made sure both were followed closely. We will be back!
It was totally awesome
Restaurant Gwendolyn is the most unique place I’ve ever dined! 1850s inspired menu. No electric in the kitchen. Ingredients with in 150 mile radius of the restaurant...as far as a horse could travel in one day in the 1850s. Only whole animals are used. As the animal ages they serve different cuts of meat. And they use everything from that animal, no waste.
The restaurant is small. The service was top notch. Everyone was very helpful. The menu is small but plenty to choose from. They do have valet parking, it is $10 charged on your bill. For me it was worth it because I didn’t have to find parking. I did the five course meal with wine pairings. Everything was delicious and wonderful I cleared my plate for each course. When I return to San Antonio, I will dine here again. Plus I am telling all my friends about this unique restaurant!!!
The food and service was outstanding! The restaurant is small and intimate. We requested a table with a view of the kitchen where we could watch the chefs preparing and plating our food. Highly recommend this venue!
What an experience!
The restaurant was fine, I like the ambiance and the concept. Unfortunately I got violently sick from the food after the first 2 courses and even though I tried to continue couldn’t finish the prix fixe. (I picked at the food a bit since I didn’t want to ruin the evening but couldn’t When I informed my waiter he “boxed up” the last 2 courses and gave us the bill - full price. When I spoke to him about it, he gave me a 10% discount. I’m sure a different time I would’ve been happy to pay, but I’m this case I was pretty upset that I walked out with a bill for food that made me sick. (I visited their bathroom at least 5 times if you know what I mean).
Reached high and missed. Often a kitchen will over season meat and have a light hand with vegetables. Not so this night at Gwendolyn - salads were over salted and meats arrived seemingly devoid of any seasoning at all. Keep in mind that this is coming from an avowed salt fan. I've eaten literally all over the world and had good meals from carts and in fine dining. This was a disappointment given the reviews I had read prior to going here for a mid-week dinner. Atmosphere and staff were pleasant, I can only assume that the chef and kitchen staff had a off night. The staff were knowledgeable of their product however; in execution it was a failure. Examples: The muffaletta's bread was gummy; surprising, because the rustic table bread was lovely. The fish broth was great but the garni were annoying, ugly and took away from the dish. The lamb barbocoa was confusing - the taste was satisfactory however the presentation was awkward. The goat entree was perfectly cooked but with a lack of seasoning you were forced to use the gremolata which was bitter and took away from the delicate taste of the goat. The tomahawk pork chops were obscene with all of the previous petite tastings it seemed out of character to then serve a 3+ rib plate. It was literally a roast. We took the 3 rib roast home and discovered it was almost rare and we prefer pork med rare. The tapioca dessert was cloyingly sweet perhaps some additional pecans would have helped to balance the plate. The no-flour chocolate cake was fabulous. I would return solely for that dish. We do not have sweet tooths and rarely indulge in dessert. A dinner for 2 at $300 should have better memories.
Outstanding food and service. Definitely a place to check out in SA, you won’t be disappointed.
An unparalleled experience. We were celebrating an anniversary/engagement and the staff went above and beyond to make the experience unique and memorable. The courses were well-timed and the uniqueness of the preindustrial touch was reflected in the flavors, presentations, and ingredients.
First time to Restaurant Gwendolyn and I brought out of town guests. Everyone had a lovely time. The food was delicious and the wine selection solid. They were very accommodating to an upset tummy and provided freshly brewed ginger tea.
AMAZING! One of the best (and longest) meals of my life. Truly the height of luxury, right in downtown San Antonio. I was staying in the city for my birthday weekend and this was the highlight of my trip. When I arrived, the menus were printed with "Happy Birthday" on them. We were greeted with complimentary champagne flutes. The service was impeccable. The atmosphere is not fussy or super fancy-which I loved-the star of the show was the food and wine. I had the 7 course tasting menu, my family had an a la carte menu and a 5 course menu with pairings. It was just an incredible experience. Not just a good meal-an experience like no other. My favorite things on the menu were the snapper, the TX bbq, and the cauliflower soup. The pairings as well as the bottle recommended by our waiter (Kevin, I believe his name was?) were perfect and so interesting. Thank you Gwendolyn staff, for the best birthday!!!
