There are no blenders, mixers, choppers, ice cream machines, deepfryers, burr sticks, nor anything else with a motor--nothing with a plug. Food machines with motors made possible an imbalance of diet that had never occurred before: we could suddenly fry enough food to make ourselves sick, we could preserve food longer than its last dangling vitamin. Refusing food-enabling machines is another way to keep the food honest, and in reasonable balance. There is not even a freezer. No perishable ingredient may travel further than a good, strong horse. The menu will move absolutely in lockstep with the seasons, as okra and eggplant taper off and leafy greens move in, we must change ourselves tosuit the product--not the other way around. What is outside is inside.
I'am happy that I chose Gwendolyn because this is an outstanding experience. Excellent service, outstanding food and the "ambiente" was perfect. I and my wife went for the five course menu, wich turns out like a seven course, because of the amuse bouche and the sorbet before the main course. Also to have a full view into the kitchen at any time was nice experience, because I like to cook myself everyday, you always can learn something. We also liked the fact that there was always enough time between each course. We enjoyed over two hours of excellent food in a very pleasant environment. A great "Thank You" to the whole staff.
The experience was very unique and appropriate for celebrating a special occasion. The menu items are pricey though, and our server attempted to up-sell us so many times that it become awkward and uncomfortable at one point. Otherwise we loved the creativeness of the dishes’ flavors and their presentations.
Awesome place for a premium dinner date. Great food, always some new things to experience on the menu. We will be back!
Frequent guest and it’s an amazing culinary adventure!
This was our second visit and it did not disappoint. It is easy to see that every dish is made with care. Presentation is amazing and the food is delicious. Portions are perfect and you are full at the end of the seven courses.
Really great experience.
EVERYTHING, was wonderful. I enjoyed every dish served! The chef, is amazing. I had a wonderful time with!
Amazing food. It’s a dining experience!
Will be highly recommending to any friends & family traveling to San Antonio. Everything was outstanding-service, food, wine-simply wonderful!
Food was amazing. Nothing from a box or freezer here and you can tell. No mixers or electronic tools are used. Everything made by hand like my great grandmother did. I did not think it would make a difference but it does. Plus, outside patio with beautiful river view. So worth a visit!
First time customer. Food and service were excellent. Very fresh ingredients and great flavor.
Amazing 5 star restaurant. The 7bcpurse menu was amazing it was my first fine dining experience but it was well worth the money spent.
Amazing experience at this restaurant. My wife and I did the food and wine pairing tasting menu and were very satisfied with the food, drink, ambience and service. I highly recommend the restaurant and definitely worth the high cost.
Delicious, creative and relaxing meal. You need to have time to enjoy and the money to spend. Definitely high quality ingredients and interesting way to prepare without modern instruments. Now that I know what to expect, I would go back.
Restaurant Gwendolyn is a fine dining experience on the Riverwalk! The "Tomahawk Pork Chop" was the best thing I had with the 5 course dinner. Definitely a restaurant for a special occasion.
Incredible creative plentiful tasting menu with exceptional service!! Definitely a must!
Best ever. Enough said. Kevin was the best very knowledgeable on the menu.
It's a great concept, and the food is high quality. The problem is that it's extremely expensive for the dining experience that it is. The service is simply "okay," if not a bit awkward, the ambiance is nothing to write home about, and for the price you pay, it just doesn't seem to make sense. If it were about 25%-35% less expensive, you'd probably be matching up with what you're getting, but the premium simply doesn't make sense to me.
My wife and I chose to indulge in the Chef's choice dinner...dish after dish of tasty and unique dishes were served with a new taste of wine with each. The staff was very attentive to our every need. Very intimate atmosphere.
An amazing location in downtown San Antonio overlooking the winding river below. With the great location and a charming interior, our expectations were building. Wow, what a disappointment. Three of us did the five course tasting menu and chose different items so our comments are not limited to just an item or two. Without question, each plate was a feast for the eyes. Beautifully and thoughtfully presented and leading to an expectation that was quickly squelched by the reality of what our mouth was telling us. How can something so beautiful be so overwhelming? You would have to ask them because they did so course after course. Overcooked fish, overcooked pork, under-flavored caesar and the list goes on. The mediocre food was painfully paced and spread over three hours and fifteen minutes. We were in agreement that the star of the night was a watermelon granita palette cleanser. Probably not what the chef intended. Gwendolyn has everything it needs to succeed but great food. It was sufficiently so off across the board that we can't chalk it up to a bad night in the kitchen and I won't give it a second try.
This was likely one of the best meals I will ever eat.
Best and most hard working kitchen in all of San Antonio. Service is always great.
I just thought the restaurant was uncomfortably fancy. Just not my kind if place.
I usually don’t score restaurants so high in each category but they deserve top marks across the board plus extra points for their mission. I’m not sure how they can afford to offer such an incredible menu at the current price. Value for money that could well be my favourite restaurant IN TEXAS!
One of San Antonio’s most unique dining experiences...pure farm to table, excellent service, every detail was perfect! Great to be able to have a nice dinner with good friends as hear one another’s conversation.
This was our second time at Gwendolyn and it was not a great experience. I ordered the tasting menu and my wife went ala carte, which seemed to set our server off a bit, so an awkward start to our meal. We've been to a good range of fine dining establisments and found that sometimes not all the courses of a tasting menu are amazing but normally a few are off the charts. There was not a single course that hit the amazing rating - my wife's garlic shrimp was odd with a garlic stuffing that tasted burnt, the lamb chop was undercooked, chewy and had too much fat, the grouper with fingerling potatoes was heavy on the potatoes and light on the grouper, and even the cookie jar dessert was overly salty and doughy.
The service was attentive although the pace was leisurely, to be kind. There seemed to be confusion around what role each of the wait staff played, so sometimes we were told what was being served and other times thie course was just placed on the table. While we watched other tables enjoying coffee brewed in the super cool devices we were never asked if we'd like any with the final course.
I write this review as less of a warning to future diners but more to help Gwendolyn's consistently meet of exceed expectations. Our first time at Gwendolyn was good enough to bring us back, but after last our dinner there, not sure we'll return.
We had a wonderful time dining at Restaurant Gwendolyn. The food was INCREDIBLE. Every course was excellent and the customer service was impeccable. The entire experience was unforgettable. Thank you, Restaurant Gwendolyn.
We walked into this restaurant not knowing it was a “fine dining” establishment! I was in cargo shorts and a little embarrassed at first, the staff made us feel perfectly comfortable and relaxed. The food was great and the service even better. The place is very unique in the way they prepare the food and I will definitely be sharing our experience with friends and family!
Not what we were expecting. We have done several tasting menus, in New York and Chicago as well as other cities. The food was not tasty at all, but we wish you the best.
Excellent service; we enjoyed the Restaurant Week menu; unique concept of using all pre-industrial cooking methods; liked most of the unique dishes
We had predetermined that we would do the seven course with wine as an anniversary gift to ourselves. It was just fabulous and pleasant timing in delivery. The dining room is quaint and small, however it is not confined. Kevin was an excellent host as he explained what was coming out with the wine parings and also shared his personal experiences and family experiences making the evening feel as if we were with friends without being intrusive. The food is local as witnessed the staff gathering a small amount herbs which are grown on the front porch. The menu changes frequently so it is difficult to say get this or that, but what we experienced rivals that of McCradys in Charleston, SC and Commanders Palace in NOLA. Thank you had a wonderful encounter!
The meal was delicious and we couldn't finish so we asked for a to go box. The server neglected to box our meals and they were thrown away. Of course we were very disappointed, but the meals were comped for the mistake so the restaurant made it right.
Very quiet, great service. Although, I would say the service is slow, and planned to be that way perhaps... our meal lasted three hours, which was a bit too long for my preference. It took at least 15 minutes to order a glass of wine, and another 30 minutes to order food. Then at least an hour for each dish to start arriving. But with good company, we enjoyed it, and nice experience.
Fantastic service and delicious food. Went during restaurant week and thoroughly enjoyed our experience.
Once again another perfect evening with best friends. The food was not only delicious but the presentation was spot on!!!!! Jenn and Kevin did such an amazing job taking care of us and making us feel like the only patrons in the restaurant.
Been here 3 times. It is awesome. Expensive, but worth the money. Never the same. Amazingly creative. Never had anything I didn't like.
Great service and a great tasting menu. Reasonably priced for the value of what you get.
Lovely little restaurant with excellent seasonal food
Went for the the wine pairing with the 7 course chef's menu and it was absolutely fantastic. Can definitely appreciate the fresh ingredients and the techniques without using machines. The homemade ice cream was unbelievable especially when paired with the peach cobbler and the tomahawk pork chop was over the top but super tasty. Great service from the maitre d and wait staff puts this as a must visit if you're in San Antonio!
If you come to San Antonio try not to miss this restaurant. Food is delicate, excelente. We did the tasting menu and the wine pairing. Excellent!
