The concept of the restaurant is everything old school, using what they had and doing as they did before the break of the industrial revolution: approximately 1850. This was the last time food was more honest.

There are no blenders, mixers, choppers, ice cream machines, deepfryers, burr sticks, nor anything else with a motor--nothing with a plug. Food machines with motors made possible an imbalance of diet that had never occurred before: we could suddenly fry enough food to make ourselves sick, we could preserve food longer than its last dangling vitamin. Refusing food-enabling machines is another way to keep the food honest, and in reasonable balance. There is not even a freezer.No perishable ingredient may travel further than a good, strong horse.The menu will move absolutely in lockstep with the seasons, as okra and eggplant taper off and leafy greens move in, we must change ourselves tosuit the product--not the other way around. What is outside is inside.

I love the concept! The fact that we could hear a rooster (dinner) crowing in the basement was fantastic. The staff was wonderful and knowledgeable about the area. Unfortunately the food was not as yummy as we hoped. Truffle fries, onion rings, and sauces were great. Portobello burger, not so much. Although the bun was great! Their take on pulled pork was a miss for my husband, but I found it interesting. Lastly, big leaf kale is too chewy for a salad! Stew it with bacon and onions!

I cannot recommend this restaurant - an establishment of sublime quality and absurd value that would be right at home in NYC, London, or Paris - more highly. The flavor pairings in each course are highly original, creative, and unfailingly please the palate. This is a true gem, and I return upon each visit to San Antonio. What else can I say but that upon each first bite of every course, a smile appears on my face?

Our server was an overbearing machismo freak show. The quiet, possibly amer-Asian or Hispanic woman who was responsible for the wine pairings was incredible. I wish she was our primary server, but I believe she served as captain of the dining room. Overall it was a great experience, despite the missteps from the bravado server.

We loved the many courses and the chef’s inventive menu! The Quail “wings” with sriracha were fun and the peach purée and strawberry sorbet were fantastic! The fried green tomatoes for dessert - not so much -😉 but you could have told us that, right? Enjoyed the excellent service!

The experience was okay, but not worth the cost of the meal. The service was pretty good. The dessert we had (some kind of chocolate torte) was not very good and was very bitter. Overall we had a very nice time and enjoyed our visit.

My only regret for our visit was not ordering a larger portion of the soup. Lunch was fantastic and the coffee service was unique and delicious. Wonderful experience.

Food was between disappointing and intolerable, except the fois gras which was quite good with an interesting citrus twist. Waitress needs a lot of training. Price was okay for lunch, but still not worth the experience.
Left unhappy that I wasted precious vacation time dining here at all.
Far prefer Bella on Houston.

We were recommended to eat here because we were told it was all about the “experience” and it sure was.... to be honest the food was disgusting. The only thing we enjoyed was the $70 bottle of wine we got. It’s over priced for the trash food they serve. I understand trying to be “unique” or “diffident” in your cooking style but everything that was served for the 5 course dinner was just 100% nasty. I would not recommend anyone to go waste their money on this place. Maybe it’s for some people but not for us. Waste of $245. Pretty disappointing

We love this place and have gone for two years on our anniversary. My wife is Vegan and it’s hard to find a place we both equally enjoy, but I think we found it. The only item that I think could have been better, and I think this was because of preparing a Vegan dish at the same time, some items of mine where cool or little over done. Not to the point that it was not great! I would recommend them to anyone who wants a great mean and great service.

Also nice to see the same front manager for two years, she is great.

Talented chefs and knowledgeable staff make this dining experience extraordinary! The restaurant concept is interesting and the food was mind blowing. The plating was beautiful for each course almost too creative and pretty to eat. It is expensive but worth every penny!

Worst restaurant experience ever. Service was horrible. We were completely ignored and we had a reservation. Never received our soup, water or wine. The appetizers came at the same time as lunch and was cold. Waitress did not know the menu or the wine. We received wine glasses but never the wine. Three times we asked for water and she said she would be back with wine as she refilled water at the other tables around us. The appetizers were cold and the hamburgers were like hockey pucks on bread that was burnt. I would never go there again even though they gave us free lunch passes for our next lunch. Manager should have come out to explain lack of service or something. It didn’t seem like anyone knew what they were doing.

I'am happy that I chose Gwendolyn because this is an outstanding experience. Excellent service, outstanding food and the "ambiente" was perfect. I and my wife went for the five course menu, wich turns out like a seven course, because of the amuse bouche and the sorbet before the main course. Also to have a full view into the kitchen at any time was nice experience, because I like to cook myself everyday, you always can learn something. We also liked the fact that there was always enough time between each course. We enjoyed over two hours of excellent food in a very pleasant environment. A great "Thank You" to the whole staff.

The experience was very unique and appropriate for celebrating a special occasion. The menu items are pricey though, and our server attempted to up-sell us so many times that it become awkward and uncomfortable at one point. Otherwise we loved the creativeness of the dishes’ flavors and their presentations.

This was our second visit and it did not disappoint. It is easy to see that every dish is made with care. Presentation is amazing and the food is delicious. Portions are perfect and you are full at the end of the seven courses.

Food was amazing. Nothing from a box or freezer here and you can tell. No mixers or electronic tools are used. Everything made by hand like my great grandmother did. I did not think it would make a difference but it does. Plus, outside patio with beautiful river view. So worth a visit!

Amazing experience at this restaurant. My wife and I did the food and wine pairing tasting menu and were very satisfied with the food, drink, ambience and service. I highly recommend the restaurant and definitely worth the high cost.

Delicious, creative and relaxing meal. You need to have time to enjoy and the money to spend. Definitely high quality ingredients and interesting way to prepare without modern instruments. Now that I know what to expect, I would go back.

Restaurant Gwendolyn is a fine dining experience on the Riverwalk! The "Tomahawk Pork Chop" was the best thing I had with the 5 course dinner. Definitely a restaurant for a special occasion.
