Alma is the winner of the James Beard Best Chef Midwest award. and has received 4 stars from the StarTribune.
Great food however overall over priced.
Truly a memorable meal, celebrating 3 birthdays. Our table service was excellent—stellar. The only thing that tainted our visit to restaurant Alma was our experience with the host. She was unenthusiastic when we arrived pointing vaguely to the cafe were we could wait for our table to be made ready. One guest was delay going into the restaurant and was asked to step aside while the host dealt with other reservations. We learned of this at the table when our guest texted us that she was outside the doors waiting for permission to join us. We went to get her and the rest of the evening’s service was great. Hosting is a difficult task, you have to control the flow of guests and do it in a welcoming way. Your host did not get the welcoming part right on Saturday, Oct 12.
Fantastic experience! Creative, fresh, expertly prepared with perfect wine pairings!
Alma is the greatest and I won’t hear different.
Why eat anywhere else?! The food is soooo good! Thank you!
It was the usual great dining experience matched with excellent wines and outstanding service.
Excellent wine pairings, bringing out the food flavors. Flan and shrimp dish was a revelation. Duck Two Ways was best duck entree I’ve ever had. Panna Cotta was wonderful to end the meal. One nit: replace the murky water in the flower vase on the table.
Excellent meal - we will definitely return for a special occasion!
Best dining experience possible. It's a bit pricey to go often but worth every penny.
We really enjoyed our experience at Alma. It's a bit pricey but with all of the courses and little treats you get, it's worth it. We had a really knowledgeable and friendly server as well, and appreciated the constant refilling of our water glasses. It was refreshing to go to a restaurant where the staff makes an effort to pay attention to us. Some of the food was overly salty and the risotto didn't have enough flavor for my pallet, but there were several dishes we really enjoyed (even the "appetizers" they bring on the house in the beginning). The sweet corn soup was my favorite from the 3 course meal followed by the marinated mushroom salad. The dessert (caramel canele) was fabulous and worth trying. I think we wouldn't mind coming back for another special occasion and trying another seasonal menu.
Maybe it was an unusually off night for them? The several severs attending to us admitted to, and apologized for, some dysfunction stating that there were a lot of new people training that night. The dining experience was over two hours making us late to our concert. Our courses came to us incomplete and out of order, and the hot food was cold. On one of the longer stretches between courses we were given short glasses of wine and a small sample of a pasta salad that I took after I asked if there were any duck components to it, the server said no, but I came to find that she was incorrect. Some part of it contained duck fat which made me feel ill for awhile after leaving. Other than that, we were celebrating our anniversary and shared a nice time together outside of the above and would still recommend Alma.
This was my first visit to Alma and it lived up to all the hype! What a wonderful meal from start to finish! Every course was spectacular and for only $62!!! Totally worth the price and more! Celebrated my birthday with my parents and we had a meal we won’t soon forget! Thank you Alma!!
It was our 30th anniversary & we requested a quiet, romantic table in the corner by the window. The night before our dinner, we spoke with the front desk and they promised we'd be seated at the requested table. Upon our (on time) arrival it was clear that a couple had been recently seated at the only table in the restaurant that fit this description. This disappointment did not set a good tone for the evening and we would've gone to a different restaurant if we had known our request would be ignored. The restaurant was extremely loud & not conducive to a quiet, intimate conversation (the acoustics need to be improved--it's very disrespectful to your customers to have to shout in order to hear each other). The food was okay but not, in our minds, reflective of a Beard Award-winning restaurant. At the prices charged, we would have expected each course of the prix fix menu to be excellent (it wasn't). We opted for the wine pairings that were inconsistent in being well-matched to each course and were over-priced especially considering the disappointingly small pours.
Service took a hit when we waited ten minutes in the bar without anyone even acknowledging us. The drinks then took too long to come. Food was outstanding, but the main course was really the size of an appetizer course. Why not give people the option to pay a little more and not leave hungry?
The food was very good but $230. With tip is crazy for a working class couple. We try to tell ourselves we can enjoy this and deserve it for a special occasion but we will not and cannot recommend to anyone we’re close to.
As it was our anniversary we were brought upstairs and were the only diners. Immediately three servers appeared with water, menus and table bread. Our server was constantly up and down the stairs checking on us. The food is otherworldly like always. We come here for her birthday and our anniversary every year. Alma never disappoints.
Best restaurant in town. The service was polished. The food was creative and delicious.
Seriously, the best restaurant in town and worth every penny.
Staff were pleasant to talk to and were very informative about both food and wine. They seem to genuinely enjoy informing guests about what they serve.
Food was great, service was awesome. Would highly recommend
Disappointed in service for the first time of many Alma experiences. Off night perhaps or new server?
Exceptional service, particularly given my advance requests for 25th Wedding Anniversary flowers & good seating - which were provided along with a complementary glass of Brut - excellent food, and not unmanageable noise levels. It was a terrific experience and I'd highly recommend the restaurant.
Exceptional service....the entire staff makes you feel like the most important person in the room.
Brought the wrong entrée. Brutal noise level. Tacky décor.
Overall we had a nice experience. Our waiter and food runners were on point, the food was tasty and wine selections were good. I wasn't a huge fan of the upper deck seating, main floor would have been livelier. The host did not seat us until 15 minutes after our reservation although the restaurant was mostly empty. I was a little confused by this with no explanation.
Alma is consistently excellent. Definitely recommend.
The food was great! Everything we had was so unique. Really great service!
Great for lace for a date
Friend and I had dinner at 7:30pm. She and I both loved the food and she especially enjoyed the wine pairings. Staff was wonderful...
Alma never disappoints!
Always a treat to spend a few hours at Restaurant Alma.
We celeb special events here.
I went alone for dinner on a Tuesday, and had a fantastic time. I sat at the bar, and frankly some restaurants don't appreciate solo diners (see Eater's articles on this), but Alma isn't one of them. I read my book and watched the kitchen work, while being politely presented with three stunning courses - cold corn soup w prawns, grilled quail w a glorious salad (not a phrase I get to say that often), and arctic char in mushroom ragu. The quail was a favorite for the delicate balance between the earthy meat and the crisp greens, which were dressed in easily the best dressing I've ever had - some combo of buttermilk and truffles, brilliant. The char has a stunning crisp skin and perfectly flaky meat, with a pungent mushroom ragu and little crispy bits of kale for texture. I enjoyed fantastic wine recommendations from the bartender, who was considerate and fun to talk to, as well as a gorgeous cocktail for dessert. Servers presented me with little amuse-bouche between courses, which is always a great touch for any prixe-fixe menu. The staff seemed not only professional but also proud of their work (as they should be) and fairly stress-free, which was lovely to see in a high-end workplace. Overall, one of my top meals.
It was a spur of the moment decision and we were a half hour late due to traffic. The staff handled it perfectly. Our server, Jackie, was knowledgable about everything and did a fabulous job. Food was very well prepared, season and presented very well. Kudos to all!
The food was wonderful. We enjoyed the unique preparation and the wine pairing. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly. Great night.
Interesting, creative dishes. The atmosphere is a little elitist but the service is friendly and professional. Good for a special occasion dinner.
Phenomenal food and service at a very reasonable price.
Fabulous as always. Best restaurant in all of Twin Cities. Always great. Service, food creative organic and always excellent!!! Wonderful fun people!!!
Celebrated my wife's 60th birthday with friends at Alma. The complete dining experience was
exceptional. Thank you Alma and staff for a memorable experience! David
Amazing service, wonderful food - we went for a special dinner based on recommendations from friends and were not disappointed. We sat upstairs so it was kinda quiet, actually think I would have preferred main level.
Absolutely my favorite restaurant! Never disappoints. Beautiful atmosphere, wonderful service and AMAZING food. Savored every bite.
