We went for our anniversary dinner in December. Little did we know there was live music. So much fun!!!
The food was delicious and our waiter was lovely.
We are totally planning to go back.
Lovely luncheon. Will happily spread the word.
Very relaxing but fun environment. On the evening we dined there, the live music was very engaging with many tables were singing along with the musicians. Unfortunately the one dish I really wanted (which apparently is a favorite) was unavailable to order, even though we dined there at 1930. Another problem we had was with our server. He seemed very friendly, but I am a pregnant woman who cannot drink alcohol. Our server made a couple of comments about me not ordering a drink, and then had a difficult time getting even water to our table. I would see him go to other tables with the water pitcher and avoid ours, even though I had asked him 5-10 minutes prior for water. Very frustrating!
As the restaurant is at a tourist hot spot it wasn’t my first choice. But we were positively surprised. Great service. We both had greatly prepared dinner. Reasonably priced overall a recommendation for a dinner.
Started out on the wrong foot. We got a call to say they couldn’t keep our OpenTable reservation for 715 pm and we would have to call back if we wanted an 8 pm seating. We made our reservation more than a month before our visit so this was quite upsetting since we were also staying in the hotel.
I was not impressed that they did that to us, but in the end it all worked out fine.
The atmosphere was very nice . They had live music which added to the ambiance. . The staff were very helpful and the food was very good. I had the seafood and it was delicious. The vegetarian option was also very good.
We had breakfast there the following morning and it was quite good.
I would recommend this restaurant for sure.
Overall very disappointed- we got seated right away having made a prior reservation but things rapidly went downhill from there - waiter confused the orders, food was mediocre - shrimp dish had small shrimp which appeared to have been boiled and previously frozen , poutine was a gelatinous mess, desserts were meh... save your $ and go elsewhere
Nice restaurant with good food but very much a tourist location.
Pleasant place to have a meal. Service good. Food enjoyable.
Had seasonal set. It was a lot of tasty food. Very good place for valued food.
We were in Quebec on vacation; this spot looked like a real tourist place because of the location so I was genuinely surprised by the wonderful atmosphere and the food was superb. Every bit as good as French cuisine. The service was impeccable.
Wife and I were in Canada for our 25th Anniversary. I made a reservation for 7:00 at this restaurant almost 2 weeks ahead. On the day of our scheduled dinner they left a message saying that they had a reservation problem and they could not take us at 7:00 and not until 8:30.
Very UNPROFESSIONAL and poor service.
I never was able to eat at Restaurant 1640. The restaurant did not honor my reservation. The sent me a voice mail on the day I was traveling to Canada, the same day as the reservation, and I did not receive it until after I walked to the restaurant that nite. They had accepted a large group, bus tour, instead of keeping a place for me. I then needed to find another restaurant with no reservation. Was totally disappointed with the total lack of regard for honoring my reservation when I had confirmed it the day before.
Reservation recommended, great set price menu option. Authentic historic Quebec dining
Worst service I have received in a restaurant in a long time! I had to refill my own water 5 times (I was near the water pitchers) inattentive and never checked on status until course was finished - ordered vegetarian items, with 1 mistake made on my part - server did not inquire or ask on this even when with 1 dish I specifically said no protein, vegetarian. Would NEVER come back here!
I’m always skeptical regarding restaurants in Quebec City as many cater to the tourist trade. This resto did not disappoint! We shared a Discovery Platter with great cheeses and cold cuts which you don’t usually find in our local restaurants. For sure they were imported. I had the beef cheek which was tender and tasty. The accompanying sauce was light and well seasoned. The meet was sitting on a cheesy bed of mashed potatoes and the side was a perfectly cooked medley of vegetables and home cut fries. My wife had a delicious balsamic dressed salad with a 1/2 lobster on top. The only complaint was a mediocre capuchino. The wine suggested was very good. Pretty good value for the money. And he staff were all smiles and very professional
Lively atmosphere with great music and reasonable priced menu. Great location and friendly service
The food was excellent. Would give it 4.5 stars if that were an option. Loved the deconstructed Cesar salad served on a slate tile. Beef cheeks in wine sauce were succulent. The service was personable and attentive but not intrusive. We dined inside, but they have a nice patio dining area. View from the patio is of Hotel Frontenac. We prefer quiet dining, so luckily for us we were there on a night when there was no live music. The cocktails were inventive takes on old standards, and delicious.
Visited from fancy reviews but it was disappointing.
Ate here while visiting Quebec City, it came recommended. The food tasted good, Lamb shank, but was served very quickly, within a few minutes of ordering, and was just lukewarm. Also, one person was served the wrong item, but it was a miscommunication English/French. Beautiful restaurant, great location and good service. Would go back again when visiting the city.
Service was nice and friendly. Great location. The food was just not good.
Beautiful restaurant, fantastic food (and wine) and exceptional service (thanks Lucas!)
This is one of Quebec Cities finest dining spots with classic dining in a casual setting. The food, service, wine list are all among the best I have ever experienced. This is a “must” when dining in Quebec City!
Meal was very good. Tuna and salmon tartare and maple crepe brûlée was outstanding. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and it was such a pleasure to have her wait on us. She remembered us the next morning at breakfast and greeted us like old friends. Breakfast was very delicious too. Would recommend eating here and would definitely come back again.
The service was terrible!!
Great food and service, on short notice, for our family of seven
Nice restaurant, live music, good location and environment.
But make sure reservation before you go, otherwise you may need to wait 1 hours during the business time 7 - 9pm
Located right across from the Chateau Frontenac so there is lots of tourist activity. Service was very attentive and friendly. We were four and had a walleye, a vegetarian cannelloni, a bistro salad, and a plank plus onion soup - all were just OK.
Food was excellent, my wife had walleye and I had French soup and salmon from the 3 course menu. We started with a cheese plank with our drinks. Service was unrushed and responsive. Highly recommend.
Beautiful restaurant and delicious food . Service was great and was a wonderful dining experience
Restaurant was recommended by a friend who recently visited Quebec. Food was good, service marginal at best.
The food was good but a little overpriced and in smaller portions to so many other comparable restaurants in and around Old Quebec. Avoid ordering alcoholic beverages by the glass...they are tiny and most notably a rip off in comparison. This is after a 3 week trip and numerous restaurant meals across the east coast. It was noticeable that our waiter did not like one of 4 sharing a plate of food and behaved oddly after that.
Muy buen restaurante, lugar encantador para cenar en la ciudad vieja de Quebec.
Not impressed by food and service was mediocre at best.
Amazing service and amazing food. We got the cheese plate and a giant bowl of curry mussels to share. The mussels aren’t on the menu so you have to ask!
This is a lovely restaurant with outdoor seating just across from a little park square and the iconic Chateau Frontenac Hotel. The plates were beautifully prepared and presented, and were actually much more interesting than the menu's description. They serve throughout the day and is justifiably a very popular place. Reservations for dinner highly recommended.
Had reservation. Got there and maitre d said reservations only for interior dinning. He was snobbish about it, we were fine inside anyways although it was perfect to sit outside. He told me “ you’ll have to be placed on waiting list for outside” - it’s not like the opentable app gives the choice. His tone was just terrible and rude. They were busy and I can understand but you need to treat guests with respect. My waiter was terrific. Fast service with appetizers and dinner. The food was excellent but the $12 French onion soup was pretty bland. Overall good but not excellent and expensive because of the local. The best thing about the visit was the service from waiter and speed in which food was prepared. It was a bit loud inside, but expected from a busy restaurant. The attitude of the matre d was just awful. It was my second time going there because I stay at the Fairmont across the street. I will skip this next time I’m in town based on my experience.
Loved the location. Easy to find. Look for the red roof. Sat outside and enjoyed the cool breeze. Caesar salad as a starter was very good. Service was superb. Table is a little small so need to juggle dishes.
