Restaurant 1640 Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I had a lovely 35th anniversary dinner. The food was absolutely fantastic. The salmon was prepared perfectly, good beer and wine. The live music was a special touch. Things seemed to get busy when a cruise ship group arrived so highly recommend making reservations. Great location.
The restaurant didn't honor our reservation, not because it was a mistake but they generally don't do that if you don't make the reservation a day or two in advance! Didn't help that I had a confirmation from them! No real apology, they couldn't care less. They are always busy anyway, all their patrons are tourists who don't come back anyway. Not recommended!
I visited the restaurant 22 years ago and it was superb. Still consider it one of the best meals i ever had and i've been to a lot of prestigious places in Europe and New York. But now, they are cutting the cost big time. Disposable paper napkins that look like fabric? Really???
My husband ordered file Mignon and they served him rib eye or whatever the hell it was. It definitely wasn't file mignon. Chocholate cone had undissolved sugar in it which made it impossible to eat. Overall, a big disappointment.
Lovely experience at this well-established restaurant in old Quebec. Made a last minute booking and got a great table in a quiet corner. Restaurant was busy but didn't impede the ambience of the place. Food was excellent traditional French cuisine, nicely presented. Duck confit was delicious and the lamb shank perfectly cooked. Wine list was extensive and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Stay away from this restaurant. We went for a family dinner while on a vacation. At the start, my drink was wrong and had to be sent back. The replacement drink took 10 minutes to arrive. The appetizer portions were minuscule and mostly tasteless. The restaurant was busy with tourists so we didn't think much when dinner seemed delayed after the appetizers. However, when I noticed the restaurant had nearly emptied, and we'd been sitting for almost two hours, I stood up to find our waiter who said oops there had been a mixup and our food would be arriving shortly. When the food finally arrived, it was awful. Three of us had pork. The dishes had obviously been sitting under a heat lamp for some time. The meat was mealy and tasteless. The pork was so dry that I had to ask for another drink which, not surprisingly, didn't come until I had to stand up and get it 15 minutes later. The fourth dish ordered was a chicken dish that I'm not sure had much in the way of chicken hidden in a plateful of lettuce. We had to get more food later for that diner. Our plates were gathered up before we were truly done eating because there was no one left in the restaurant and the staff clearly wanted to go home. The dessert that came with a fixed price meal was uninspired and made at least the day before. At the end, we had to get up to find someone so we could pay the overpriced bill because they ignored my card sitting on the check. I can't state too strongly that this establishment is just a sham operation and a gross tourist trap posing as moderate dining.
This restaurant looks touristy with a big umbrellas over outdoor tables in the middle of Old Quebec. But if you step inside a different experience awaits. I ordered grilled ceasar salad and lamb shank. Delicious. Every member of my party raved about their choice.
The restaurant was pretty clean and comfortable and had well priced kids' options. The food itself was OK but the service was really good and attentive. The place was a little dark and the music a bit loud. I would rate it 3.5/5.
Scattered server. Our poor server must need help. He brought me the wrong wine--the $11 glass, not the $10 glass I ordered. He forgot the dessert that came with my husband's fixed course meal selection. He also forgot to put salt and pepper on the table and did not ask if I wanted ground pepper for my salad. That said, the atmosphere is charming and intimate. The sax and piano music was a nice addition to the evening. The food we had was very good. My husband really enjoyed his chicken and pasta, and stated that their French Onion soup was "outstanding." I also enjoyed my salad. The salmon with orange and ginger was VERY sweet--not my taste--but the salmon was cooked perfectly and the accompanying rice was very good. Had we been in a more assertive mood, or more excited about dessert after our filling 2 courses, we would have been more insistent on getting the dessert. We had reservations, which I suggest, as the restaurant was very full and busy.
Our loft apartment was steps away. The weather was beautiful on the evening we dined here, and as soon as we sat down on the large outside terrace, we were welcomed by a pleasant hostess. We don't typically order from a fixed menu, but there were so many good choices, we went ahead and did so. We both had the onion soup to start, and it was delicious--not salty. I had a tender skirt steak, and my husband had a perfectly grilled rib pork chop. Both dishes were served with a variety of seasonal fresh vegetables and potatoes. The maple creme brulee dessert and good coffee capped off a wonderful evening. The soup starter, main meal and dessert was $35 Canadian each!!!! Also, there was a live singer next door who entertained those on the terrace to rousing applause!!!!
Quebec City ambience with outdoor seating. Inside seating is also a good option.
There is a 3 course special available. Although that menu wasn't brought to us right away. It was a great option and very tasty: our table orderedOnion soup or tuna tartare, catch of the day, creme brûlée. Wine selections good. Portion sizes ample.
Excellent service! Very enjoyable experience.
