My wife and I had a wonderful dinner at the 1640 Bistro the evening before we decided it was time to practice real social distancing. Things were just starting to be more strongly clamped down due to the Covid 19 crisis. The bistro sat everyone with at least one table between each group and actually turned customers away to keep the numbers down. Our server kept contact to an absolute minimum, but was attentive, engaging and warm.
As for the food, in a word, delicious. I had the prawn salad and it was fresh & crisp with a wonderful assortment of items mixed in: figs, almonds and a kind of light, whipped cheese that was a complete surprise and delight. My wife had the cheese plate which, as usual, was filled with a tasty assortment of local products.
All in all, a tasty experience with fine service (especially considering the circumstances) and wonderful food. Will definitely go back when the world opens up again.

Le meilleur restaurant où nous avons mangé.

Tout était délicieux, de l'entrée jusqu'au dessert.

Le dôme au chocolat était digne des meilleures pâtisseries européennes.

De plus, la présentation des plats était superbe.

Wonderful atmosphere, excellent food. We greatly enjoyed hearing live piano music while we had dinner. Staff were attentive, pleasant, easy going. Highly recommend.

Beautiful place overall and the food was a perfect portion just received a cold steak and the server didn’t seem busy to check on us so I ate my sides and then we had to flag her down when I received my steak again it was hot this time but definitely wasn’t medium like I asked it was very bloody so I didn’t get to enjoy it all. The creme brûlée was seriously the best !!!!

Restaurant is in two parts, up front seemed to have a nice atmosphere and live music which was one of the reasons we made the reservation. Arrived and the front half was full so they put us in the back, we were the only ones there but others did follow, it's dark and on the way to the washroom. Would have immediately left except we were tired and hungry. Food and service was ok but overpriced for what it was. If you're going insist you sit in the front half, not the back.

Service was friendly and fine. Mediocre food. Music was way too loud. It was annoying and distracting and took away from a fairly charming atmosphere.
The waiters were professional and kind but I wouldn’t go back for the food.

Moins aimé mon filet mignon à cause du côté sucré !!! Mais pour le reste excellent bon vin belle entrée et bon désert !!!

Set in an amazing building and great location, you might be worried that it’s going to be a mediocre, tourist trap but it’s not. It is a great place for food, ambiance. I managed to dine and drink there several times. It’s on my go-to list for any future visits to Quebec City.

Bistro 1640 was our third dinner out in Quebec City over the Christmas holidays. Its proximity to other fine restaurants and in the shadow of the Chateau Frontenac enhances the ambiance. The staff were very professional and accommodating. The menu is unique - a table d'hote of Burrata/Fig Salad, Scallops with Gremolata Prawns and dessert of Maple Syrup Creme Brulee! Magnifique! The accordion player provided us with lively music, including a chosen love song that I sang with him. We were given a restaurant-wide applause. Of course, I played the spoons.

We had fun at 1640 on Christmas. I do think the Open Table site should have noted there was a limited, prix fixe menu for the evening ($55/person). We are just not big eaters, and I would have gone elsewhere. The food was uneven, but pretty good. We loved the fig salad and bison starters, the tartare not so much. For dinner, the pork chop was great, the duck pasta was good but the sauce was runny, the steak was overcooked, and the shrimp was awful--overdone coconut shrimp with not enough sauce to make the couscous palatable. The creme brulee dessert was delicious, but the almond tart was tasteless--all we ate were the poached pears on top. Loved the accordion player, service was nice. Would go back, but not on a holiday.

I’m surprised why the menu is different than last time ? I wanted snail dish and highly recommend to my husband. But they don’t have. And less choices on the menu. Maybe it’s holiday season. But the server brought us to a table by the window That’s a nice !

We got there a little early but that was no problem, our server sat us down right away. He gave us lots of time to look over the menu and wine list. He was very good at his job (didn’t catch his name unfortunately).
Our food was nice and hot. Husbands beef cheeks were so tender and my seafood pizza was very good.
The wine was on the pricey side but it was good.
We would return if in the area again.

In the heart of old Quebec located in one of the oldest buildings... it has charm & if you like whiskey, I can highly recommend their ‘Cigars & Whisky” signature drink 🥃❤️

Bien en général. Mais rien de remarquable ou mémorable. Donc pas de raison d'y revenir. Les desserts, 2 ratés en 2. La tarte au citron était encore gelé, difficile à couper et apprécier. Et pour le poché de poire au vin, les saveurs étaient complètement éclipsées par l'intensité beaucoup trop élevé de la cannelle, je n'ai pas pu le finir. Les entrées et les repas de la table d'hôte étaient délicieux.

Sat at the bar. Bartenders were great. They really take their craft seriously and their drinks prove it! Pianist played some wonderful tunes as well. Highly recommend!

The restaurant is very nice. My drink and food was excellent. The waiter we had was a different story. We felt rushed and ignored the entire time. He never came back to check on us. I believe there may have been a language issue, but he made no attempt to give good service. It was awful and worst service of our entire trip. There were 4 of us and we all felt the same. We can’t even say it was because of us, we never got any opportunity to be needy! So i don’t think we annoyed him! He just never came around or asked if we needed anything!

La burrata était dure, pas du tout crémeuse à l'intérieur comme on doit s'y attendre.
L'araignée de veau n'était pas à la hauteur. Cuisson hétérogène et mal parée.

Pour la burrata je ne comprends pas ce que c'est, j'en ai mangé un peu partout en Italie, même à Andria son lieu de naissance et au Québec et je n'avais jamais vu rien de tel.
Pour l'araignée de veau, il faudrait songer à une pré-cuisson sous-vide, à 52°C 4 à 5 heures avant de la saisir à feu intense.

This is for tourists who do not wish to venture further out for better cuisine. The service was bad. No one was at the door to greet new customers and had to stand to wait more than 5 minutes before someone from the restaurant paid attention to the bunch of new patrons. We still had to wait around despite making reservations and tables were empty because the restaurant crews were not ready to sit us down. The appetizer (some old bread with tomato sauce and dried up cheese) was so bad, I knew the food won't be good from then on. The wine was way too expensive for its value.

Relaxed, comfortable atmosphere—-casual yet sophisticated. The food was creative, with unique blending of spices that would appeal to both foodies and also less adventurous diners. My husband had cod, two of us had scallops/shrimp pasta, and one had vegetarian. We were also all very happy with appetizers and dessert. Excellent service. Will definitely go back next time we are in Quebec City.
