Amma, the name means "Mother", is an intimate restaurant and has the same soothing qualities. Opened in 2002 by Anju Sharma, is a gem tucked away on the upper east side of Manhattan, the stylish restaurant evokes images of spices, with its ochre colored walls and sensuous red-orange suede wrap-around banquettes. Art deco chandeliers and pristine linens complete the ambience. In a short period of time, Amma has received numerous accolades from the press. Amma was rated "Two Stars" by Mr. William Grimes of NY Times. At Amma, the wine list is updated on a weekly basis and is carefully chosen from 30 countries from around the world. Amma, shows its guest a different India, so old that it is fresh.

The food and service was excellent . The food was freshly made and tasted delicious . We had the lunch specials which was good sized portions and filling . They maintain all Covid protocols and the place was very clean and neat .

We were looking to try a different restaurant for our Christmas Eve dinner. I found Amma on Open Table and the menu and reviews looked good. Turns out we we arrived at Amma, my wife said “we’ve eaten here before”. It must have been years ago. Turned out the food was excellent and the service was good. It was a pleasant Christmas Eve dinner that we both enjoyed.

We just took a 4 days trip to NY and tried many Indian restaurants during our visit. Amma turned out to be the best food and best service. Very elegantly decorated dining room with great and humble service. Highly recommended to anyone looking for good Indian food in NY.

We have been visiting Amma for a long time now and primarily for their beetroot koftas which are delicious and the highlight of their menu!

We loved Amma, authentic all the way! We did the tasting menus (veg and non-veg) with wine pairings. Both were excellent, food a d wine. Look forward to returning!

How the mighty have fallen. I was shocked at the terrible execution that we experienced last night. We had previously been to this restaurant many times prior to the pandemic and it appears as if there is new ownership or absentee ownership because everything about the experience was second rate. No need to pay high prices in Midtown for not very good Indian food with microscopically small portions but exponentially high prices. Very amateur turn for this once high-end Indian restaurant. Pass.
