About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Romantic
The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Went for brunch at this dowager restaurant in the theater district. The food was well prepared and you could have either have a formal meal or more brunch items. They also offer a price fixed lunch for $30. That is a bargain in NY. Unfortunately, the restaurant shows its age and portions are on the small side.

Second visit to this gem on 42nd Street. I had to change our reservation time twice (originally planned to have dinner before a 7 pm curtain down the block but traffic; we finally decided to eat after the show) and when I called they could not have been nicer. The atmosphere, complete with live music by a charming pianist and a singer) transported us right back to Paris. The food, a tuna tartare to share and then, duck a l’orange for me and truffle pasta for my husband, came out quickly and was beautifully presented. My only complaint, and it is minor:$8 apiece for coffee. Go; you won’t be sorry.

Our dinner was very good quality and taste. Waiter never came to check on our dinner until we were finished. By substituting a vegetable it changed the preparation of the plate w a side of goat cheese instead of layered and baked into the dish. Had the waiter checked in the plate would have been much better.

Chez Josephine is such a terrific restaurant on Theater Row, so conveniently located for dining before or after a show. The staff is welcoming and attentive. Great food choices and a wonderful pre fixe option. The interior is beautifully decorated (lots of portraits of Josephine Baker) with theater references. The lighting and sound levels makes for a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. I love dining at Chez Jo.
