Designed by Rockwell Group, TAO Downtown offers a distinct sense of arrival and discovery and is the first TAO venue where guests descend into a multi-level space. The subterranean restaurant, located in the heart of Chelsea, is intended to look and feel as if it has been there for decades and only unearthed recently to reveal the artifacts within. Upon arrival, guests immediately encounter a long corridor with a dragon scale patterned screen and Chinese calligraphy murals mounted on weathered brick walls.

    We arrived early so we opted to sit at the sushi bar to be seated right away. It was a little crowded but not too bad. Our server came fairly quickly. From start to finish we wanted for nothing. We go to the Tao at Mohegan Sun a lot and the food was the same quality. Some menù changes messed us up a little. Luckily the waitress asked a question thay got us to look more closely at the menu. The King Crab California Roll was in the same place on the menu that the Spicy King Crab Roll was at Tao so we almost ordered the wrong item! They also don’t have the Sensei drink on the menu at all and the Lychee martini is much better at our home Tao at Mohegan. It’s actually made differently. The prices were comparable to the prices at mohegan as well. It was VERY loud there. We had a good time and will return!

    The service was not good. Had to shout to get a manager to come over and get some forks. Someone else’s desert was served to us before our appetizers. The waiter was nice but never checked on us but managers in suits were everywhere not helping anyone. Food was mid, expensive Chinese food. The atmosphere is cool that’s about it.

    Overall had a pretty good experience. The food is always a hit—I’m obsessed with their spicy tuna and yellowtail jalapeño sashimi. Fresh and flavorful. The place was packed (literally no empty tables), so while the service was a bit slow, it felt more like they were just overwhelmed. One weird thing though—they were super strict about taking photos with flash on a small camera, but not on a phone, which honestly doesn’t make much sense. I’d give it a solid 7/10.

    Awesome experience! I have been to Tao Midtown numerous times but never this downtown location. It was just as wonderful. The ambiance is super cool and the food and service was divine. Also the staff was really friendly which I appreciated (bartender, servers and also the hosts).

    Exceptional. Awesome. Amazing. Truly appreciated Ms. Maria B. and all Tao Hospitality team serving our semi-private table next to Large Buddha in main dining room with the gorgeously exquisite Tao decor really hit it out of the park Saturday night June 7th. Our double Tao Birthday celebration was so beautiful and flawlessly executed by Maria B who was perfect and so very accommodating, so on point with everything & everyone. Maria B made excellent recommendations and suggestions for everyone and everything including the location of our table. Wow. Amazingly Fabulous and Fun 🤩.. We all had a fantastic time! 🥰 Tao is Truly an Inspiring and Remarkable atmosphere! Bravo to Maria B! & Tao Group Hospitality! We will definitely be back again very soon! Cheers 🥂 Tao Downtown 9th Ave Restaurant!
