Renata Ratings and Reviews
The salad was delicious and we appreciate the server tell8mg us it was big enough to be shared. We ordered the squid ink pasta and the braised chicken pasta. Both were delicious and did not disappoint. The portion size was good. Our server was very attentive yet gave you enough room. Great service.
We had the roasted pork and the pasta with lamb. Both were excellent. The only problem we had, was the side dish we ordered; it was called Roasted Spigarello with maitake mushrroms and grana padano . We were served a bitter greens (I thought it was chard) with nothing else in it. We asked the waitress if maybe we were served the wrong side dish, and she told us as she was walking away that that's what we ordered and that we'd probably find some mushrooms as the bottom of the dish. There were none and no cheese at all that we could tell. It was disappointing (the dish and the attention it was given when we asked about it) but didn't ruin the night for us. I think the description of this dish should be changed a bit to reflect what is actually served.
Fantastic pizza...had the gorgonzola, red onion, LOVED. Pastas are delicious, we had the tagliatelle and it was exceptional....all handmade noodles too, love that. Service at the chef's bar was a bit slow, but overall...good. Oh, and the cocktails very tasty! Definitely fry the mezcal one....yummyl
Will come back for sure..
The service was excellent. Our server, Adam, was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and wine selections. He enthusiastically answered all our questions about the restaurant, the plancha, the outdoor space, etc.
Our food was absolutely delicious. The bread, the pasta, and the sautéed kale were all excellent.
The only negative was the noise level, but all the other aspects of our dining experience more than made up for it.
Over rated and over priced. The food was decent, but there are a lot of decent places in Portland that aren't so avaricious in their pricing. We were told that our order was going to be late, and the waiter offered to bring us some bread while we waited. I assumed this was a complementary offer to make up for the delay in the kitchen. Nope. We were charged $6 for the bread and - get this - $1 for the olive oil. If I'm going to be nickel-and-dimed I'd prefer it to be at a restaurant where the food and service are worth it.
Had the Scarpinocc, Squid Ink Calamaretti, Chickory Salad and Fried Olives. Fantastically creative, authentic meal with an explosion of nuances and flavors. Attentive and friendly service, restaurant was full but ambience was warm and comfortable.... definitely going back!
We ordered deep fried olives and the oil it was fried in didn't seem to be that fresh. Tagliatelle lamb Ragu noodles were just average tasting served as if they weren't completely drained before served in the dish. The overall spice combinations of various dishes ordered did not seem to compliment the food with much culinary expertise. In general, the food was good tasting, but considering the price, it did not seem to have the effort of a chef's pride.
We had to wait a little while to be seated, but it really wasn't that bad. The server at our table was very apologetic about everything, and once we had our (delicious) Negroni's brought to us everything else disappeared. Would highly recommend ordering the Cacio e pepe, its on the bar menu but snag it while your sitting. Its amazing. Also their wine list is wonderful and not boring. There is a section that specifies in wine grown in volcanic soil types. Pick up a bottle by Sicilian producers iCustodi and you will be in heaven. a salud.
Small but focused menu. Family style options. Fabulous bucatini all'amatriciana even though they used bacon and not pork jowl. Rich, satisfying risotto. For protein, the pork was tender and juicy, served with braised radicchio. Great wine list and good selection by the glass. Wonderful, thoughtful unobtrusive service. Portions are small and prices are high but I will come back. What they do they do very well and the dining room is a lovely place in which to spend several pleasant hours.
The food and service here are always on point! The pizzas are great, especially the seasonal ones. The liver mousse...the textures/flavors of crunchy, crispy, and savory, and sweet is amazing! I also especially love the interior of the restaurant and being able to see the open kitchen. One of my most fave restaurants in Portland!
We usually love Renata, however, on this visit, there was very little to be desired and we were so disappointed. They were not able to seat us until 45 minutes PAST our reservation time. (What's the point of the reservation?) One if the meals we ordered was never served. We received an apology, but nothing else....one person in our group didn't get his meal!?!? They didn't offer to make it because we were told it was too late and the kitchen was closing. We had ordered a bottle of wine as soon as we sat down and it wasn't served until our dinner finally arrived, after we requested it a second time (and reminded the server what we had ordered. We never received a visit from the manager. They did offer a free dessert at the end of the meal, but at that point, we were over it. We love the food, but the service and overall experience during this trip were horrible.
The food was amazing. Our server was friendly and gracious. It was a very pleasant surprise to have a server of color. As a person of color, I appreciate a diverse staff. We were early, so we ordered cocktails at the bar--they were fantastic. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. Now, the hard part. We waited for over an hour for our food--no bread during the wait. Another very friendly staff member walked by and noticed my empty cocktail coupe--he asked if I would like another drink. I ordered one and waited over 20 minutes for it. Our awesome server apologized for the long wait for our food--his explanation about the long cooking process for bucatini didn't explain the wait for everything else, though. He recovered by offering a free dessert and the other staff member came by to let me know that I would not be charged for my second drink. So, the food is great. The staff is very courteous. Perhaps issues with the kitchen/expo were the problem--not sure.
Overall was ok, but not great. First of all - service was fantastic. The burrata starter was delicious - I loved the way the gingerbread and cranberries played off the creaminess of the cheese - overall a well balanced dish. We had two pastas - while the pastas themselves were well cooked, overall the dishes were not spectacular and were lacking balance in flavor - the tagliatelle with braised beef was ho hum, and the Chitarra was really lacking balance. It featured black garlic, which I know can be a strong flavor (that I love) but the pasta had an almost overwhelmingly acidic quality that tasted like it was drenched in red wine vinegar and drowned out almost all other flavors...hard to describe. Again, ok, but not great. We also had the pork roast (I believe they were out of the loin and this was a leg roast). The meat itself was delicious and well cooked - I found the barley it was served with to have again an almost overwhelming acidic quality - not the same flavor as the pasta but similar. Just off putting. This is coming from someone who enjoys acid in foods. Anyway, maybe we had an off night, otherwise the experience was enjoyable, but I didn't love the food.
This is the best restaurant in town. We are a happily married 40-something couple who gets away from the kids 1-5 times per month for a dinner date. We have tried all of the top and not-so-top restaurants in town, several of them multiple times. We typically order the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings. We know great food and great service (and sadly, are also experts on the opposite). Renata never disappoints. Someone once pointed out the owners of this restaurant to us. You wouldn't know it, because you will see them cleaning tables and asking if you are ready for another glass of wine. It turns out hard work and attention to detail always prevail. (Along with fantastic food, great cocktails, and exceptional wines by the glass). I love this place.
always superb! dining at Renata is always delicious, fun and satisfying. Great and inventive pastas make this one of my favorite Portland Italian restaurants. Service was exemplary and the cocktails alone are worth a visit.
Dishes were creative and had some great flavor combinations. The building and evening lighting give it a special feel.
Out of the four dishes we ordered, two were extremely sweet, especially the burrata appetizer. Tasty, but might have made a better dessert.
Renata was delicious, the food was unique and tasted wonderful and different! The service was just ok. It seemed ok at first but then we waited almost an hour for our entrees after having salad and appetizers. The waitress never came over to address the issue and when we finally asked she said they would be right out which took another 15 minutes. The service continued to be slow for the rest of the meal.
Extremely slow service, supposedly our dinner ticket was misplaced, took about an hour for our entree to come out. Server came up to us after 40 minutes and told us something happened, then took another 15-20 minutes for meal to arrive.
Cheese plate was very disappointing. Cheese varieties were similar, fairly bland. Crackers had an odd herb in them. chutney was olive based, didn't add much flavor.
Came here for my birthday. It took about 35 minutes for our drinks. One of the guests at our table ordered Prosecco and it was flat. She had to take it up to the bar to get a new bottle opened. Our table ordered a pizza to start off with and it was good, but probably not worth the price as it only had potatoes on it. I ordered their risotto and was very disappointed with my portion size. $22 for maybe a cup of risotto with two mushrooms thrown on top (really just mixed in randomly) seems ridiculous. Not to mention it was served on a flat plate which made it cool down way too fast. None of the food was bad, it just was not worth the price.
It was so noisy that we could not hear the friends sitting across the table. There were times we just didn't talk because we couldn't hear each other. The people sitting next to us were shouting at each other and we could hear them better than our own conversation. there was some machine running in the back ground, but it was ubelievably loud.
Everything else was outstanding and the food was absolutely delicious. we loved the food and out waiter was also outstanding!
