Wonderful food, fresh, delicious and great Georgian wine!
The food was well-prepared, nicely presented, and delicious. The server was friendly and professional. The wine he recommended was an excellent pairing. I would definitely return again.
Outstanding traditional Russian food. I've been to Russia and Ukraine. I love the food there. This place took me right back there.
My favorite restaurant in San Francisco. Great food that speaks to the soul. I order a new dish every time and i'm never disappointed.
I was hesitant to provide an excellent rating for this restaurant because I don't want people flocking to this neighborhood gem (sorry for feeling selfish). I have been going to this restaurant for a while and I usually bring family or friends. Like I said, everything is excellent! They even have a new ordering device on the table which I thought was perfect (I have thought about this device 4 years ago). You will not experience any wait staff hovering around while you are eating while having conversations to ask "if everything is okay?" because when you need service, ready to order, or have any questions - all you have to do is to press the device and the wait staff come to your table. Pretty awesome! I'm sure a lot of restaurants will follow this new trend. There you go - I finally provided this rating A++
Super place . Must for Russian food . Go try it out . Why does it have to be 50 words ?
Clean and well lite. Personable and good service and would go again to try something different.
Very good variety or the dishes and very tasty food. However service is not up to food level.
Overall very good dining experience.
Love this restaurant! Great food and stuff. Good selection of beer and vine. Treat yourself and try some delicious Russian food :)
Great Russian and 'stan area food. The appetizer samples were fresh and delicious as was the Uzbek rice which we had as a main. A decent sample of wines (including Georgian) and beer to go with the food. Unfortunately they don't have vodka to go with the herring so had to go with the beer. The waiter was very helpful in giving us recommendations and explaining the dishes. Don't miss the excellent Napoleon cake for desert which is a lot like the honey cake with multiple layers.
The food and service were wonderful! We had some salmon caviar blinis, a delicious salad (a salad Olivier - what a potato salad always wished it could be,) Uzbeki lamb pilaf, and a wonderful dessert and wine. It was all outstanding.
The food and service here is amazing! We had potato zrazy, Julienne cocote, beef stroganoff, Chilean sea bass, then syrniki and Napoleon cake for dessert and everything was beyond delicious! Ochen' vkusno!!!! I'm recommending this place to everyone :-)
Quite a bustling active place. Crowd was mixed but a few parties fit the ethnic demographic. Food was hearty and seemed pretty authentic. I would have appreciated a little sound dampening though.
Loved this restaurant. Service was great. Tried a variety of Foods-- stroganoff and cabbage rolls delicious. Lamb dishes well done. Recognize birthdays in a fun way. Will definitely return.
Went there with friends and was impressed with the food. We ordered the cabbage rolls, the stroganoff, the gulash, and the chicken shashlyk and shared, family style. All were very good and there's no question that we'd go back again. The wait staff was attentive and very helpful in selecting our choices.
We ate at Red Tavern for lunch and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Very authentic Russian food so you know the borscht was fabulous. We had the beef stroganoff and it was wonderful, too. The dark brown bread is a meal in itself. We visit San Francisco often from Santa Cruz and will definitely return to the Red Tavern. Our waiter was a very good looking, professional young man. I think he was Russian, too :-)
I'm no expert, but it appears to be authentic Russian food served by authentic Russian people to authentic Russian (or maybe Bulgarian) customers -- there appeared to be two large parties going on at the same time. That made it a little noisy, but I would guess that's not always the case.
Meat is a main ingredient, to be found in all three soups (even the borscht, which was very good) and most of the appetizers, as well as nearly all of the mains. The stroganoff was terrific, served not over noodles as is traditional but in a bowl and topped with an inflated layer of bread dough -- the presentation looked sort of like French onion soup. The lamb chops had a funny spice that we couldn't identify, which made it slightly off-putting, but it came with a minced cabbage side that was great. The garlic potatoes were o.k.
The service was amiable, even though it was clear that the two large parties were stressing out the staff a little. We'll definitely go back, hopefully when they're a little less crowded.
Why go to French restaurants when Russian is just as yummy, better flamboyant presentation, nicer wait staff, less pricey, and more friendly? GO RUSSIAN!
Delicious, authentic Russian cuisine! Excellent borscht and amazing cabbage rolls. A must-try if you're in the area!
Red Tavern is always my 1st choice whenever it comes to Russian cuisine. The restaurant is cozy and nice. Service and food are always good. Highly recommend to foodies and for special occasions.
Excellent service, nice ambience, great food! It is a neighborhood gem.
I never knew I loved Russian food until coming to Res Tavern. Everything is delicious. Especially the pelmeny.
Great authentic food with fresh ingredients for a low price.
Absolutely wonderful place. Very genuine food that's very good and the atmosphere was just a great place to have a wholesome meal for a fair price. Service was great and very casual, felt like I was eating at my neighborhood restaurant, and any request we had he enthusiastically completed.
Highly recommend for a low key date spot
Do not go there in cold nights, they do not have heater at all or are not willing to use it (and are not apologetic about it either.) This was the 3rd time we went, we enjoy the food and the peculiar place but we are not coming back in the winter.
Great service, food and ambient. Would highly recommend it to everyone !!!
We have no issues booking the appointment and the waitress was great. Russian food are amazing/супер!
This is a cozy little Russian restaurant. Excellent food and diverse choices. The service was personal and exceptional. I would go again.
I spent a lot of time in Moscow and I just wanted some good Russian food. It was very good and I was satisfied. Waitress spoke Russian.
They kept offering bread despite our initial refusal for bread. After fifth time, bread arrived anyway
Service was slow despite only three other tables being occupied. Waitstaff seemed friendly when they came around
Food seemed just ok, nothing notable
Food was excellent. The stuffed cabbage rolls were the best and first rate borscht. It is a tiny place but very nice with great food and good service.
This is one of our family's favorite restaurants, so many of the special Russian dishes are delicious, with generous portions. I am particularly fond of the beef tongue, a dish that is hard to find here in San Francisco. I can't say enough about their gourmet preparation of their beef tongue. This visit I ordered the sautéed cabbage and the mushroom julienne cocotte, and both were delicious. This time we were too full for dessert, but we usually order their special Napoleon cake.
Menu was eclectic at best and the execution was lacking. This is an ethnic venue, where if you speak the language perhaps you will be treated better.
Eastern European food and atmosphere at it's best!
This is the first Russian restaurant we tried and the food is good. We made an early reservation at 5:30 p.m. as it was Mother's Day. It still took close to an hour for the food to arrive. Perhaps it would be better on a regular weekend.
Red Tavern is a delightful restaurant that we will return to again and again. Our server was a warm, friendly woman who was genuinely determined to be sure that our first experience here was a great one. Dinner was very tasty, served beautifully. We were also fortunate enough to enjoy young people celebrating a birthday. What fun!!
The best Russian food in San Francisco.
