Red Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Great Russian and 'stan area food. The appetizer samples were fresh and delicious as was the Uzbek rice which we had as a main. A decent sample of wines (including Georgian) and beer to go with the food. Unfortunately they don't have vodka to go with the herring so had to go with the beer. The waiter was very helpful in giving us recommendations and explaining the dishes. Don't miss the excellent Napoleon cake for desert which is a lot like the honey cake with multiple layers.
Went there with friends and was impressed with the food. We ordered the cabbage rolls, the stroganoff, the gulash, and the chicken shashlyk and shared, family style. All were very good and there's no question that we'd go back again. The wait staff was attentive and very helpful in selecting our choices.
We ate at Red Tavern for lunch and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Very authentic Russian food so you know the borscht was fabulous. We had the beef stroganoff and it was wonderful, too. The dark brown bread is a meal in itself. We visit San Francisco often from Santa Cruz and will definitely return to the Red Tavern. Our waiter was a very good looking, professional young man. I think he was Russian, too :-)
I'm no expert, but it appears to be authentic Russian food served by authentic Russian people to authentic Russian (or maybe Bulgarian) customers -- there appeared to be two large parties going on at the same time. That made it a little noisy, but I would guess that's not always the case.
Meat is a main ingredient, to be found in all three soups (even the borscht, which was very good) and most of the appetizers, as well as nearly all of the mains. The stroganoff was terrific, served not over noodles as is traditional but in a bowl and topped with an inflated layer of bread dough -- the presentation looked sort of like French onion soup. The lamb chops had a funny spice that we couldn't identify, which made it slightly off-putting, but it came with a minced cabbage side that was great. The garlic potatoes were o.k.
The service was amiable, even though it was clear that the two large parties were stressing out the staff a little. We'll definitely go back, hopefully when they're a little less crowded.
Absolutely wonderful place. Very genuine food that's very good and the atmosphere was just a great place to have a wholesome meal for a fair price. Service was great and very casual, felt like I was eating at my neighborhood restaurant, and any request we had he enthusiastically completed.
Highly recommend for a low key date spot
This is one of our family's favorite restaurants, so many of the special Russian dishes are delicious, with generous portions. I am particularly fond of the beef tongue, a dish that is hard to find here in San Francisco. I can't say enough about their gourmet preparation of their beef tongue. This visit I ordered the sautéed cabbage and the mushroom julienne cocotte, and both were delicious. This time we were too full for dessert, but we usually order their special Napoleon cake.
Red Tavern is a delightful restaurant that we will return to again and again. Our server was a warm, friendly woman who was genuinely determined to be sure that our first experience here was a great one. Dinner was very tasty, served beautifully. We were also fortunate enough to enjoy young people celebrating a birthday. What fun!!
This was our first visit to this restaurant, so we had a wide sampling of dishes, from borscht, olivie, tongue, veal pelmeni, stroganoff, chicken kebab and rabbit stew--everything was cooked to perfection. It was the best Russian food we've ever had. Service was good. This will be our go-to restaurant for Russian food in the city from now on.
Very fun, enlightening dining experience! We were the only non-Russians dining that evening- the entirety of the restaurant were folks celebrating some sort of festive occasion. We were jealous of the vodka they had as the restaurant only serves beer & wine (good Czech beer though). The food was quite delicious. I loved the rabbit stew- it was a huge portion which tasted even better the second day when I had it for lunch. The cabbage rolls were a bit bland, and the stroganoff was solid.
We were there on a rainy evening recently. Katerina, our server, was very very nice, taking the time to explain every item on the menu as this was our first visit. The four of us had a sampling of many dishes, including the borsch soup, the Olivia salad, the beef tongue, zucchini pancake, vegetarian pelmeny, stuffed cabbage, Hungarian goulash and blini for dessert. Every dish has its own flavor and they were all good. The tongue was outstanding, just about the best I've ever had.
We will certainly return and recommend it to our friends.
