Super place . Must for Russian food . Go try it out . Why does it have to be 50 words ?
Clean and well lite. Personable and good service and would go again to try something different.
Very good variety or the dishes and very tasty food. However service is not up to food level.
Overall very good dining experience.
Love this restaurant! Great food and stuff. Good selection of beer and vine. Treat yourself and try some delicious Russian food :)
Great Russian and 'stan area food. The appetizer samples were fresh and delicious as was the Uzbek rice which we had as a main. A decent sample of wines (including Georgian) and beer to go with the food. Unfortunately they don't have vodka to go with the herring so had to go with the beer. The waiter was very helpful in giving us recommendations and explaining the dishes. Don't miss the excellent Napoleon cake for desert which is a lot like the honey cake with multiple layers.
The food and service were wonderful! We had some salmon caviar blinis, a delicious salad (a salad Olivier - what a potato salad always wished it could be,) Uzbeki lamb pilaf, and a wonderful dessert and wine. It was all outstanding.
The food and service here is amazing! We had potato zrazy, Julienne cocote, beef stroganoff, Chilean sea bass, then syrniki and Napoleon cake for dessert and everything was beyond delicious! Ochen' vkusno!!!! I'm recommending this place to everyone :-)
Quite a bustling active place. Crowd was mixed but a few parties fit the ethnic demographic. Food was hearty and seemed pretty authentic. I would have appreciated a little sound dampening though.
Loved this restaurant. Service was great. Tried a variety of Foods-- stroganoff and cabbage rolls delicious. Lamb dishes well done. Recognize birthdays in a fun way. Will definitely return.
Went there with friends and was impressed with the food. We ordered the cabbage rolls, the stroganoff, the gulash, and the chicken shashlyk and shared, family style. All were very good and there's no question that we'd go back again. The wait staff was attentive and very helpful in selecting our choices.
We ate at Red Tavern for lunch and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Very authentic Russian food so you know the borscht was fabulous. We had the beef stroganoff and it was wonderful, too. The dark brown bread is a meal in itself. We visit San Francisco often from Santa Cruz and will definitely return to the Red Tavern. Our waiter was a very good looking, professional young man. I think he was Russian, too :-)
I'm no expert, but it appears to be authentic Russian food served by authentic Russian people to authentic Russian (or maybe Bulgarian) customers -- there appeared to be two large parties going on at the same time. That made it a little noisy, but I would guess that's not always the case.
Meat is a main ingredient, to be found in all three soups (even the borscht, which was very good) and most of the appetizers, as well as nearly all of the mains. The stroganoff was terrific, served not over noodles as is traditional but in a bowl and topped with an inflated layer of bread dough -- the presentation looked sort of like French onion soup. The lamb chops had a funny spice that we couldn't identify, which made it slightly off-putting, but it came with a minced cabbage side that was great. The garlic potatoes were o.k.
The service was amiable, even though it was clear that the two large parties were stressing out the staff a little. We'll definitely go back, hopefully when they're a little less crowded.
Why go to French restaurants when Russian is just as yummy, better flamboyant presentation, nicer wait staff, less pricey, and more friendly? GO RUSSIAN!
