Red Stripe Ratings and Reviews
Came based on recommendations. Although a neighborhood favorite, I found Red Stripe intensively loud.. difficult to communicate with your date or guests while seated. It’s extrememly loud. Food was good, but the overwhelming noise eclipsed the culinary experience.
The one complaint I will make if that although we made a reservation for 8pm and arrived at about 8:05, we were not sat until almost 8:30 as the restaurant claimed not to have a table available for us. Over we were seated though, the server was over quickly to fill our water and to greet us. He was very attentive throughout the meal.
Both my wife and I ordered the French onion soup, which was tasty, albeit a bit sweet for my taste. While mine was the right proportion of broth to onion to bread, my wife had very little broth in hers so it meant that it was a bit difficult to eat after she got a few spoonfuls of broth.
I had the steak frites which was very tasty and the Gorgonzola butter which was also a nice addition. The frites were well seasoned so, even though I asked for ketchup, I didn't end up using it.
My wife ordered the roasted salmon which she said very much enjoyed. It seemed to be will cooked and seasoned and the Brussels sprouts that came with it looked tasty too.
I would definitely go back the next time I'm in Providence.
Our first time dining at Red Stripe. Food was amazing. Service was excellent. I wasn't sure what to expect, but we enjoyed our meals.
Parking for this place is not so good. Located right near a college, so a lot of the parking spaces are for residents only. Thankfully the spot that was available wasn't a metered spot.
The staff and meals, made it worth going here.
(They have Stella on tap!! 😁) BIG plus for me!! 🤣🤣
Terribly disappointed in the quality and expense of the food. I ordered the beef stroganoff and my friend ordered the orecchiette pasta. Both were smothered in sauce (as if it was being used to cover up the rest of the faulty food in the dish) over mushy pasta at $20 plus dollars. Neither of us ate our meal. We only complained about the orecchiette and it was taken off the bill. We felt awkward complaining about both meals. Our other friend had a burger which she loved. The server was lovely and offered her apologies and a complimentary desert. There is no signage on the outside of the restaurant and a very dimly light doorway made identifying the restaurant difficult. Needless to say we would not go back.
Red Stripe's food is known generally to be good, not great. I was with 6 others for lunch. One said her salad was tired and looked like it was "prepared yesterday." My mussels were incredibly large - not a good sign b/c of over maturity - also tough, gritty and inedible. The saffron broth with them was very good. So too were the frites. I asked for and quickly received some very good crusty bread to sop up the mussel broth. My friends ate the frites. Four of us had coffee after lunch: the word on that was "it is OK." The biggest drawback: THE NOISE LEVEL IS INCREDIBLY HIGH. I know several folks who won't even patronize this restaurant because of the noise. We couldn't even hear a conversation across our table. The server was very accommodating and didn't charge me for the mussels even though I said I'd happily pay half the price to cover the frites, broth, and bread.
Casual upscale French inspired bistro atmosphere and food. Good cocktails. Excellent mussels frites - try the house version. They are great. Same for the steak frites. Have been there 4 times and the service is always outstanding. Aaron was our server on Saturday. He was attentive, friendly, and professional. The house manager stopped by our table and recommended a scotch. Very nice touch.
Went for restaurant week... took an 1h 45m to get our dinner. Service was great, drinks were great, but apparently a line cook quit on a Saturday night and our food was slow and awful by the time it came out. Sand in the mussels, pin bones in the salmon, cheese in the vegan wrap, burned brussel sprouts... HOWEVER I have been there 3 times before and loved it. Went here for my birthday with 9 people and they just tanked. They bought my dinner, and hopefully it's better with a smaller group when it's not so busy.
My wife and I went for New Years Eve. Made a reservation ahead of time and was seated right away. The seating for two can be cramped because the tables are very, very close together. We personally do not like that because we prefer a bit more privacy and intimate. The restaurant itself is beautiful and I love the open kitchen. Both of our entrees were very good but the highlight was the mussel dish. I read the Red Stripe is known for their array of mussel dishes and we went with our waitresses recommendation: The Red Stripe Moules. It was very, very good. I can see myself going back and getting the mussels just for myself as a dinner. Overall a great experience and will be coming back.
