The atmosphere is nice: a good mix of bar area, taller tables with stools for groups of various sizes, nice booths, plus a quieter area of table and chairs toward the north end which looks good for quiet conversation over drinks. The food was creative and good. The service was exception: both the greeter and the waitress and the person keeping water glasses and busing were all friendly, very welcoming, and genuinely cared if we were enjoying the meal and if there was anything we needed. A good experience overall!
We went in after the hockey game, got some apps, split the scallops and had a couple drinks. The food was fantastic. Highly recommend the deviled eggs and oysters. The scallops were also very good. We will be going again for a full dinner.
Our experience was quite nice. We went for our anniversary dinner. Upon getting to the table, the wait staff had written out a Happy Anniversary card, which was a nice touch. The atmosphere was pleasant and the waitress was very attentive. My steak was delicious but my wife’s scallops were just ok she said.
We liked the restaurant enough to go back for breakfast the next day, and the breakfast was quite tasty.
Overall, we would definitely come back and try it again.
We had hamburgers. Good meat with fresh ingredients. Service was excellent. Nice atmosphere with good drinks.
It was a nice dinner. Not as many choices as I remembered from quite a while ago and I didn't feel the food was as good. Service was great.
Great for business lunches with a small- larger group. Good and service are great and you can have actual conversations.
We had a large group on the way to the ballet, and they really looked after us. I’m addition to everything they already do right, they made sure we were out in plenty of time to see our show. It was perfect!
We went on Valentines day and the staff was overwhelmed. It took 90 minutes to get our meal and they only took our drink order once, never checked on drinks or water before the meal got there. The seasoning on my pork chop was way to salty. Had to cut away the grilled edge. Knowing they leaving you hanging for so long, they should have been buy to offer bread or snacks or something. A simple "we are soo busy" did not cut it. I could see they were in over there heads. Won't be back.
Valentines Day.
We came here several times. The menu was much better years ago.
We did the valentine special. The meal was good. The panna cotta was too small. The salad was very average. The main corse and dessert made up for it though.
Service was good but we requested orange slices and they never came.
Great service and yummy food. Chicken was a little undercooked but the waitress was kind enough to take it off our bill even though we ate it anyway and practically licked the plate.
It's been about 8 years since my husband and I have been to Red Star, as we don't get downtown that often. Decided on dinner here since we were staying downtown for a staycation. My husband was a bit upset that they had olives WITH pits in the martini's, which wasn't told to us by our server. She apologized and said she normally does. However the appetizer and meals more than made up for it. Pork Rilettes in cheese sauce was divine! My pork chop was so tender and seared perfectly and my husbands clams in the fennel broth amazing! We ended up sharing each others meals and it worked out perfectly. They also nailed my husband Old Fashioned. Still the best ones in the city.
Food and service was good
Great place to have a nice dinner in a group or on a date.
Nice dinner
Been a long time sine we've eaten at the Red Star Tavern... but it's a nice place and recommended. Sunday morning Brunch was delicious and although we made a reservation, they had room to spare. Recommended.
We were staying in the Hotel Monaco and went to Happy Hour and breakfast at Red Star. Happy Hour was a good value. We had a couple of cocktails and a cheese plate. The cheese plate wasn't huge but was quite good with a mix of cheeses, almonds, crackers, and fresh fruit. For breakfast, the food was also excellent but again the portions were on the smaller size. My wife had lox and there were four pieces with a bagel and fixings. It was good fish and everything was presented nicely. I had french toast, which was excellent. Again, I thought it was a good value.
Both times we dined, the service was excellent. We were celebrating our anniversary and all the staff acknowledged it and they even put an anniversary card on the table signed by all the staff.
I would return again, especially if I were staying in the hotel. You get a card for $10 off your bill if you are a guest.
It was Christmas morning with the five of us misfits. Our waiter gifted pastries while we felt decadent drinking perfectly crafted Spanish coffees. When our food was delivered it was most beautiful and delish! A perfect way to enjoy a holiday with friends.
Sebastian, you are such an incredible person and a wonderful server of food. Thank you for making this dining experience -our first ever in Portland- a memorable and fun one. To the Chef and kitchen staff, thank you for the food! Every bite was phenomenal and we truly mean it.
What an incredible night with amazing food.
Our experience at Red Star for a recent Sunday lunch missed the mark. The brunch menu was limited, and they were out of two of the menu items our group had craved. Biscuits and gravy and tomato soup were both unavailable, leaving not very much to choose from. Unfortunately our waiter had misinformed us about the tomato soup, initially indicating that it was available. The manager and waiter certainly went out of their way to make things right, and we appreciate that. Overall, we were underwhelmed by the overall experience.
Terrible and very unprofessional service. Started with being seated 20 minutes past our reservation time. Waitress immediately told us it would be a while. I told her we were celebrating a b-day and looking forward to a special evening. She replied, good luck. My mother and n law (birthday girl) ordered a Manhattan with a twist - came with a cherry. She asked for a twist - instead of taking the drink back and making it right, they brought her a twist on a napkin. Took way too long for dinner to arrive. Waitress brought a second plate of bread as she didn’t want us to “famish”. Also, small but very noticeable, the lighting was way too bright. Ridiculous considering there are so many excellent restaurants in Portland.
Had breakfast here when staying at the Kimpton Monaco. Service and ambience were fine but the food was awful. I had the hash which was greasy and fatty with barely cooked eggs My companion did a little better with the standard breakfast but potatoes seems deep fried, OJ was from a carton etc. Portland has such great breakfast places this was a real disappointment
Our server was fantastic, but the food was very sub-par. The salmon and brussel sprouts were overcooked, the pork rilletes were dry and the truffle deviled eggs were super weird. The carrot soup was excellent, as was the huckleberry ice cream. The other things were ordered were middle of the road.
Keith always takes such good care of us when we go for breakfast at Red Star. It's never quite the same when he's not there, he spoils us! Looking forward to our next trip into the restaurant. Aoife and Dave.
An anniversary dinner. We were treated like royalty and our server Cheryl was personable and efficient. The food as always was amazing.
Service very slow. Were seated and waited 15 -20 minutes to order a coffee at brunch. Food was good and was served in a reasonable time. But things like coffee refills and a forgotten drink were very slow.
Delicious food and drinks! My wife had the halibut special and it was fantastic. And our server was a British peach, so kind and hilarious. Definitely would eat here again!
Another lovely evening at Red Star! We were treated like royalty!!
Casual atmosphere, nice evening vibe. Good drinks. Not very busy on a Saturday night
We had a lovely server. We had a large party with my husband and I and our 4 young boys. They can be a little rambunctious and our waiter was patient and kind to us! On top of that, the food was amazing and the serving sizes were large. YUM
Loved our food, loved our server, loved this joint! Will definitely be back!!!
We’re really proud of the warm, intimate atmosphere we created and love that you noticed. We're excited to see you back at Red Star - Red Star Management (9/22/19)
Red Star is a great restaurant that can accommodate almost everyone. The ambiance is more casual and great for corporate lunches. They have big tables that can accommodate large groups. Portions are just right and the staff are really nice.
Thanks so much for your feedback! We’re really proud of the warm, intimate atmosphere we created. We will most definitely share your feedback with our staff! - Red Star Management (8/31/19)
The services was very slow. I was eating by myself and it took over 30 minutes to take my order and then another 30 minutes to get my food. I was sitting with water for over an hour before I received my food.
Fabulous fresh food that is always sure to please. Need to make a change to a dish? They will always try to please. I love this place.
Scrumptious food and drinks. Large portion. I had the pork chop which was outstandingly, and HUGE!
Anniversary
Great service and ambiance and the food was spectacular. The lamb and chicken dishes were amazing
I haven't been in for about 7 years, but met some friend there from out of town. Fingers crossed it was still as great now as it was then. I shouldn't have been worried.
IT WAS AMAZING. Quick service, great food, quiet (granted it was a Sunday evening at 6:30).
Our waitress, can't remember her name, but she was from So Africa, was great. I always joke with staff and she was ready. We had lots of laughs with her.
I rated everything 5 stars, except value. I appreciate the cost, but would have like a few more veggies with my AWESOME flank steak.
I promise not to wait 7 years to come back.

A comfortable environment, great service and good food. Red Star is quickly becoming my favorite spot for a date night in Portland.
The Portland food scene is amazing and this one is a winner. We had no problem getting a reservation and the food delivered. I had some of the best pesto pasta and my daughter loved her Lamb Shank. My mother enjoyed the soup of the day, smoked chicken vegetable. She was not wowed by the shrimp cocktail.
