I met up with my sister and visiting brother and his wife for dinner. We were greeted by a very charming and professional host, whose name I have forgotten... she had very short red hair. We were warmly welcomed by management. The server assistant was gruff and borderline rude throughout-perhaps she had a headache. Server was less than focused- food was delivered to incorrect positions, a burger was underdone(not badly- my sister went with it) and the table was cluttered. It was a busy night, so a few points missed can be forgiven. The food was excellent! My brother had a beautiful steak dish, his wife had some lovely roast chicken, and I had a butter lettuce salad and LOTS of beautiful mussels. We will definitely return- I certainly understand that sometimes service can be bumpy!!
Love Red Star. The service is excellent -- warm, professional but friendly, and perfectly attentive. The ambience is nice and the food is quite good, with some interesting combinations, and served in manageable portions, which I really appreciate. My only wish is for a few more vegetarian options, though I have to say that ones I've tried have been delicious. Highly Recommend.
This was a birthday celebration, and restaurant was advised before-hand. Staff was welcoming and with good wishes proclaimed when we arrived.
Food was very disappointing. Hamburger served on a tasteless hot dog bun, risotto had very little taste. It took 3 tries to get a cup of coffee that was not lukewarm.
Restaurant was busy; maybe that was the problem, but still . . . doubt we'll consider returning.
The online menu was much more interesting than the acutual menu. everything we ordered was a fairly small portion but the worst was the scallop dish the only included 2 scallops and traces of pork cheek. My husband went home hungry.
We had a wonderful dinner at Red Star. The food was over the top delicious, and the service was top notch. Will certainly be back!
YUM!!!!!!! Vegetarian options are excellent. :) Good food and great service.
The ambiance is outstanding along with the happy hour food and service. I would definitely return!
I wanted this to be a great experience. I had the scallop main dish. There were 5 tiny scallops. The dish was terrible!!
I have wanted to try Red Star for months. Looking at the reviews, I was ready for a great eating experience. We arrived and were quickly seated. There was a table with a number of people celebrating an event at a nearby table, but otherwise the restaurant was only moderately busy. After a short time our server took our order, provided our drinks and a few minutes later provided a basket of bread. We ordered soups and a main entree to split. After about 20 minutes, the server asked if we wanted more bread as the kitchen was still working on our order, but assured us that the food would be arriving shortly. Well, it wasn't. We waited and waited and waited. After 25 more minutes, with no food, we had to ask for our server to come to our table. The server apologized and said that the kitchen was really backed up. Looking around at the empty tables, we questioned how they could be that backed up since the place was not fully booked. We asked for the manager to come over. The server said the manager would be right there. Well, he wasn't. We got up to leave, I complained to the hostess about our treatment, when the manager finally appeared behind us. I confronted him about the poor service, the lack of expediency, and the unbelievable notion that not even soup could be served within 45 minutes. Again the excuse of a busy kitchen. Yeah, no. In short, no amount of apologies could possibly make me want to stay or return to this place. Ever.
Always an excellent choice for brunch. Food is delicious and there are plenty of choices, plus they will substitute or change menu items to fit your diet or any food issues you may have. Our only issue was that the wait staff took way too long to clear our table, so we could just sit and chat with our drinks and coffees after eating.
We went to Red Star on a friends recommendation. We arrived early and had a drink at the bar which was very good. We were rather surprised that there were so very few people in the restaurant for a Saturday evening. Food was mediocre; the risotto lacked flavor and the roasted chicken was dry. Our waitress was attentive. Overall for the price I’ve had better meals and probably will not return.
O.k. brunch, but limited menu options, and nothing too special. Food was o.k., but not great. They need to add color, i.e. fruuts or veegies, or flowers to their plates. Presentation was bland. Coffee and bloody mary's were good.
The service was great! Our server, I think his name was Ben, did an exceptional job.
Went on Tuesday to meet a friend from out of town, so quieter than it probably is later in the week. Shout out to Andrea, our server, who was attentive but not hovering and who went out of her way to keep us happy. Great food, loved the craft beers, we live on the other side of the river but will be back!
Fantastic server. Fantastic food. Truly photo worthy presentations on food, drinks & atmosphere.
Food is very good with some unique selections and is a good value for Portland
For the prices.. the food isn’t that great. It was just eh. It’s more of a bar with 5 star prices.
Pretty cold because of the aircon not working properly!
The fried green tomatoes were not too good. The mushroom soup was good.
Food was good but second course came out just as we started on our appetizers. We also brought our own bottle of wine and was happy to pay the corkage fee however when they opened the wine they destroyed the cork and we had cork throughout our decanted wine.
The booth was small, get a table if you’re over 5’8” we had to move so my husband was comfortable and could her his feet & knees under the table.
Great place to eat, food was very good perfectly cooked and treated wonderful. Atmosphere was very relaxed and the service was outstanding. Looking forward to my next visit.
Food was great and the dining around is nice. Waitress was very helpful in finding gluten free options on the menu.
Our waitress Cheryl was amazing! She was very friendly and knew the menu well. She Was well in tune to us!
All OK. BUT, the waiter kept calling my wife and me "you guys". Not cool.
Solid choice for great cocktails and good bar food (burgers were excellent, as were duck wings and curried deviled eggs).
This was our second visit to Red Star. The food was delicious, the service was great (Ashley was very friendly and attentive), and the atmosphere was perfect. Will certainly eat here again.
Pleasantly surprised. Was expecting bar food from a hotel restaurant, but the food was creative and a big step up from typical pub grub.
Great!!! Awesome service and delicious food! We will be back.
Food was very good, portions are small but the burgers are good sized. Spendy but it is downtown after all. Service wasn’t great but the manager pitched in and all was well.
LARGE space, very comfortable feeling and good lighting. The steak was amazing, perfectly marinated and cooked perfectly, my boyfriend LOVED the local mushrooms. very good quality of food. Service was a little slow considering there were only maybe 10 people total in the restaurant at the time, but my waitress was very nice and easy to talk to.
Sometimes I hesitate to go to a hotel restaurant. But don’t. This one was great. Service was terrific. And the food was delicious. From the heirloom tomatoes to the millet cakes and salmon everyone loved their meal! We would definitely go back
We were here for brunch with 2 young children in our party. The server was very kind and accommodating for them...even bringing extra crayons and snacks while waiting for our food. The breakfast food was excellent.
It was our second time and we LOVED it. The food was on point just wished they didn’t take the scallops risotto off the menu.. :)
This restaurant is an oasis in downtown Portland and close to all of the major hotels. I ordered the fish special but they ran out. Rather than our server telling us, a manager came out, apologized and took my substitute order. Then the chef brought out a shrimp cocktail to make amends. Then our dinners came out at the same time. What could have been a bigger problem for us turned into an exceptional experience about how to make diners really happy. Five Stars!
Food was great. Menu had a lot of options. Ambience was cool and drink menu was perfect
Red Star never disappoints. I do miss the lavender corn bread. The lamb shank is wonderful.
Excellent, attentive service...Generous drinks and very tasty entrees...While one steak was under cooked, they went the extra mile to satisfy and accommodate....Wide variety of selections.
Was expecting to order from the brunch menu. However, they were doing a Mother's Day buffet brunch for $50 per person. It was quite a hefty price for brunch. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our brunch. Food was good. Some items were very good, some fair. All in all a nice brunch, but not sure if it was worth the $50 value.
I found it unfortunate the manager wouldn’t allow me to order their lamb shank because he had other more important customers coming in later as part of a large group ... he didn’t use the words “more important” but that is the translation I took away since he was holding orders so he could have enough for the group ... service was great, food is good and well prepared ...
