I have been to Red Star many times and always enjoyed my meal. I did attach a medium score to service this time, not because of any issues with the server, but due to the fact that our meal- a hamburger- took an extraordinary time to prepare. I know this may have just been an oversight in the kitchen, or between the kitchen and the server, but it was a bit disappointing. Otherwise the experience was just fine and I would not hesitate to return to Red Star.
As usual, the food and service were wonderful. This visit, we had the breakfast sandwich. While it may seem like a simple standard egg sandwich, the flavor profile was fantastic. Each ingredient complimented the other and it filled us up for an afternoon of shopping without being weighed down. The Madagascar vanilla bean latte was slightly sweet and enhanced the espresso without the added sugars. I don't drink lattes often, but enjoyed it thoroughly.
Thanks for stopping by and seeing us for breakfast. We are so happy it was delicious and filling so you could enjoy the rest of your day. We are always happy to host you for a bite or a latte and we hope we can see you again soon! - Red Star Management
The atmosphere in the dining room was charming - warm and cozy, and there was some noise from the bar area, not too loud, just enough to make it lively. The food was excellent - the sauces, main items, side dishes all had variety and unusual ingredients (i.e. fava bean dumplings for example). A couple of caveats - the cheese bread is not "cheesy" and is not warm - it had a spread, not melted cheese, and there was no discernable parmesan taste in it; the bread was sliced thickly, so toasting it meant a very large area of hard crust, hard to eat. However, it was quite delicious on its own merit as the spread was quite good. Another issue was that the service was terribly slow, but not, apparently, due to the waiters but instead to the kitchen. That may have been a rare situation so I would not hesitate to go back - overall the food and ambience, and the wait service were excellent.
Thank you so much for your feed back and sharing your thoughts about Red Star. We are glad you had an excellent meal and we are always happy to hear from our guests. Our kitchen always tries to meet the mark to offer expedient and delicious meals but thank you for your patience when it takes a bit more time. Next time we will be sure to hit the mark and make sure everything is perfect. - Red Star Management
The appetizers and drinks were great; however, three of us ordered the $20 burger and all of them were overcooked. My burger in particular was way overdone, so much so that it tasted like char, was dry, and half the thickness of even the other two overdone burgers. The service was also slow and one of our daughter's meals came out at least 10 minutes after the rest of the meals. Given the price of the food, the burger should have been stellar and my daughter's meal, or something, comped.
We are so sorry to hear about your burger and your daughters meal. Thank you for your patience and you are absolutely right, we should have made it right with you then and there. We are very disappointed we missed the mark and we hope you can come in and see us again so we can make it right. - Red Star Management
The wait staff was attentive, the food was amazing. Everything was great.
Party of 5 friends, started during happy hours (beers $2 off), appetizers (charcuterie & cheese boards), risotto ($21), brick chicken ($27) and halibut special ($36)... Overall the atmosphere was upscale, in downtown, nice escape from rainy weather, and pretty quiet so we could enjoy the conversations. I'd go back to Red Star Tavern.
Service and food was great. Ahi Tuna was amazing. I'll be back soon!!!!!
The food service was so-so but the hostess was fabulous. My meal was overcooked which may have ben my fault for saying I wanted it well but it was fish and ended up being rubbery.
Food is exceptional, perfectly prepared. Service could be better, server didn't know the dishes.
Food was incredible and service was very good! Drinks were very tasty but a little on the pricy side. Would definitely go again!
It's a very special moment in a downtown environment when you can get such amazing personable service. Plus, the food was delicious.
Excellent. Best in town.
This place has an awesome happy hour, really enjoyed our visit.
Greeted warmly, bar staff knowledgeable, wait staff friendly and helpful, hostess was amazing. Menu items were interesting, flavors complex, charcuterie great, all items tasty.
The happy hour is great value! The normal menu is great but it's a bit pricey. It's definitely a great place to take someone to give them a good Portland bar experience.
Went here because I wanted to find a new happy hour spot nearby... this is definitely my new spot! Came with a friend after work dressed casually and felt comfortable there, but I really would love to come back dressed up because it has a "treat yo self" vibe going on. Their signature drink is a MUST HAVE if you want to know what heaven tastes like. Happy hour bites are equally delectable, I ordered the wings (spicy but don't overpower taste) and my friend ordered the steak with smoked blue cheese fries. The wait staff was friendly and very good. I don't think my water glass got below 2 inches, and I drink a lot of water! Overall this restaurant is a 11/10 in my book!
Lizzie and Tim are really incredible! I had an unexpected allergic reaction to a soup, and they literally did everything within their power to reverse my dining experience. My husband and I were so impressed with them that we went back two days later. Best crème brûlée I've ever had in my life!!!
Great bloody Mary’s - quiet for New Years Dat brunch
Overpriced and the staff could care less about service. They were very busy socializing with each other and we found it hard to order drinks and dinner.
We stayed at the Hotel Monaco for New Year's and enjoyed happy hour and dinner New Year's Eve and breakfast New Year's Day. The food was excellent and the staff we're very friendly. Excellent place!
Red Star has a well rounded menu, great for business lunches or anytime you don't know someone's palate. The atmosphere is business casual, and has tables large enough to accommodate large groups.
I met up with my sister and visiting brother and his wife for dinner. We were greeted by a very charming and professional host, whose name I have forgotten... she had very short red hair. We were warmly welcomed by management. The server assistant was gruff and borderline rude throughout-perhaps she had a headache. Server was less than focused- food was delivered to incorrect positions, a burger was underdone(not badly- my sister went with it) and the table was cluttered. It was a busy night, so a few points missed can be forgiven. The food was excellent! My brother had a beautiful steak dish, his wife had some lovely roast chicken, and I had a butter lettuce salad and LOTS of beautiful mussels. We will definitely return- I certainly understand that sometimes service can be bumpy!!
Love Red Star. The service is excellent -- warm, professional but friendly, and perfectly attentive. The ambience is nice and the food is quite good, with some interesting combinations, and served in manageable portions, which I really appreciate. My only wish is for a few more vegetarian options, though I have to say that ones I've tried have been delicious. Highly Recommend.
This was a birthday celebration, and restaurant was advised before-hand. Staff was welcoming and with good wishes proclaimed when we arrived.
Food was very disappointing. Hamburger served on a tasteless hot dog bun, risotto had very little taste. It took 3 tries to get a cup of coffee that was not lukewarm.
Restaurant was busy; maybe that was the problem, but still . . . doubt we'll consider returning.
The online menu was much more interesting than the acutual menu. everything we ordered was a fairly small portion but the worst was the scallop dish the only included 2 scallops and traces of pork cheek. My husband went home hungry.
We had a wonderful dinner at Red Star. The food was over the top delicious, and the service was top notch. Will certainly be back!
YUM!!!!!!! Vegetarian options are excellent. :) Good food and great service.
The ambiance is outstanding along with the happy hour food and service. I would definitely return!
I wanted this to be a great experience. I had the scallop main dish. There were 5 tiny scallops. The dish was terrible!!
I have wanted to try Red Star for months. Looking at the reviews, I was ready for a great eating experience. We arrived and were quickly seated. There was a table with a number of people celebrating an event at a nearby table, but otherwise the restaurant was only moderately busy. After a short time our server took our order, provided our drinks and a few minutes later provided a basket of bread. We ordered soups and a main entree to split. After about 20 minutes, the server asked if we wanted more bread as the kitchen was still working on our order, but assured us that the food would be arriving shortly. Well, it wasn't. We waited and waited and waited. After 25 more minutes, with no food, we had to ask for our server to come to our table. The server apologized and said that the kitchen was really backed up. Looking around at the empty tables, we questioned how they could be that backed up since the place was not fully booked. We asked for the manager to come over. The server said the manager would be right there. Well, he wasn't. We got up to leave, I complained to the hostess about our treatment, when the manager finally appeared behind us. I confronted him about the poor service, the lack of expediency, and the unbelievable notion that not even soup could be served within 45 minutes. Again the excuse of a busy kitchen. Yeah, no. In short, no amount of apologies could possibly make me want to stay or return to this place. Ever.
Always an excellent choice for brunch. Food is delicious and there are plenty of choices, plus they will substitute or change menu items to fit your diet or any food issues you may have. Our only issue was that the wait staff took way too long to clear our table, so we could just sit and chat with our drinks and coffees after eating.
We went to Red Star on a friends recommendation. We arrived early and had a drink at the bar which was very good. We were rather surprised that there were so very few people in the restaurant for a Saturday evening. Food was mediocre; the risotto lacked flavor and the roasted chicken was dry. Our waitress was attentive. Overall for the price I’ve had better meals and probably will not return.
O.k. brunch, but limited menu options, and nothing too special. Food was o.k., but not great. They need to add color, i.e. fruuts or veegies, or flowers to their plates. Presentation was bland. Coffee and bloody mary's were good.
The service was great! Our server, I think his name was Ben, did an exceptional job.
Went on Tuesday to meet a friend from out of town, so quieter than it probably is later in the week. Shout out to Andrea, our server, who was attentive but not hovering and who went out of her way to keep us happy. Great food, loved the craft beers, we live on the other side of the river but will be back!
Fantastic server. Fantastic food. Truly photo worthy presentations on food, drinks & atmosphere.
Food is very good with some unique selections and is a good value for Portland
For the prices.. the food isn’t that great. It was just eh. It’s more of a bar with 5 star prices.
Pretty cold because of the aircon not working properly!
The fried green tomatoes were not too good. The mushroom soup was good.
