Red Stag Grill-Grand Bohemian Hotel Asheville Ratings and Reviews
Surprised my wife on her birthday with dinner at the Red Stag. We sat by the fireplace and had a drink before we were seated. The service was outstanding and the food was incredible. Finished the evening with the carrot cake which was very good. We always enjoy eating at the Red Stag
I have been to the Red Stagg MANY times before and loved it. Actually, my favorite in Asheville. I was attending a black tie event and staying at another popular resort, but choose “The Red Stagg” for dinner with my guest.
To my disappointment our orders were wrong I order squash soup received She Crab... ordered appetizers... they were good, but the server did not come back to table for over 45 minutes... we had to ask for our entrees ... which came out wrong and we had to settle due to the late arrival making us late for our event. We had 5:45/6:00 reservations for an 8pm event ... plenty of time for dinner and our event.
Very disappointing, when we had other choices without driving across town.
If you like beef, elk, seafood done to perfection in a casually elegant setting with great wine and drinks and excellent service, then this is the place for you.
Our server was always there when she was needed but never hovered - we never felt rushed or ignored. She took great care of us and made my wife's birthday dinner a truly special occasion.
We shared a starter of the bohemian hunt board. It was plenty for the four of us. The local cheeses and meats were fresh and tasty, and the spicy mustard gave everything a wonderful zing! The pickles and olives complemented the meats and cheeses beautifully.
My medium-rare filet was done to perfection and the garlic butter sauce only enhanced it. My wife had the filet mignon and lobster tale - again, tasty and done to perfection. One of our guests had the scallops which were seared to bring out their nutty sweetness. Our other guest had the ribeye with béarnaise sauce.
The side vegetables were tasty and well presented; I had the sweet potato puree and Brussels sprouts, done just as I like them. Our guest who had the scallops asked for just spinach instead of the listed veg - no problem!
For dessert we had the white chocolate cheesecake, pecan carrot cake and s'mores pie. Yum!
Hot tea, cappuccino, hot coffee all done correctly and served promptly.
All in all a wonderful evening.
Although the prices are not terribly out of line, I thought they were higher than average in the general economy. The place was very busy, and our meals came out later than several folks around us who arrived significantly later than we did. The chef blamed it on the time it took to cook the lamb ...
On the other hand, the meals were exceptionally tasty and prepared to our order. I recommend this place on that basis alone.
My family and I (party of 8) recently visited the restaurant for New Year's Eve. They offered a pre-fixed menu, which looked great at a glance, however, the glamour of the restaurant did not translate into quality food, which made for a rather disappointing experience, especially having to pay $120 per person.
A majority of the hot dishes came out cold. The ravioli was under-salted, the elk short rib was dry, tough, and under-salted as well. The lobster bisque was extremely over-salted, which three people had to send back to the kitchen in exchange for the salad, which was a good plate. The foi gras was cold and had a repulsive texture. We can tell the duck was sous vide but there were some blue/rare spots toward the corners that were not edible. I even saw a couple eating next to us return two plates as well.
The filet mignon was seasoned very well, and the seabass was delicious, however, these two dishes generally come out great no matter what you do to them, so I can't credit the restaurant for making it especially delicious. Due to an ice storm, the restaurant wasn't at full capacity, so there was no excuse to have received food of this quality from a restaurant/hotel of such a caliber. We were all looking forward to this dinner, so it was a true shame the outcome resulted in this. Perhaps the a la carte menu is more promising, but for now, I won't be recommending this restaurant to any of my family/friends planning to visit Asheville.
One of my favorite local restaurants places. Excellent for dining with friends or business associates. Food is typically very good and consistent in quality and presentation. The ambiance is wonderful, feeling like a hunting lodge with just enough quirky to make it luxurious and fun at the same time - try it, you’ll love it.
A very eloquent happening place for a special occasion or evening out. Everything from the complimentary valet to being seated at our table was quick and polite. The inside atmosphere was unique and cozy. The waiter knew the menu and was able to help us with some suggestions on what we might really enjoy. My wife had the Scallop entree which was cooked just right and it was creative how they presented the dish on the plate. I had the Filet Mignon, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. All which I really enjoyed. The quantity might have not seemed like much overall but it was delicious and filled me up. Overall, this is a wonderful place and a great experience for anyone visiting the area.
Beautiful place. The restaurant is gorgeous and ambiance is perfect. I love this place and the food is always great! Ryan was our server tonight and he was kind, informative of the menu and added to our great experience and service. This is our fourth time dining here and it never disappoints. Ask for Ryan, he is a great server and a master of his craft. The gentleman and young lady that were helping with our table were super friendly too.
What a perfectly lovely experience. Everyone was polite and gracious. top level service. Our server, David, was fantastic! Clearly the training for front of the house is excellent. No matter if it was the hostess, busser, food runner or server, their response to "thank you" was ALWAS 'my pleasure".
The food was excellent, we both had the Elk. Desert was delicious.
I have already recommended this place to everyone i know who lives or visits Asheville.
My wife and I had Christmas dinner ("brunch" -- at 3 PM!) with her son. The four course prix fixe meal was excellent, with several good choices for each course. I had venison while others had lamb chops or roast beef. Service was excellent. I appreciate that they saved us a quit spot away from the crowd. Good restaurant for our quit holiday celebration. Recommended!
We had a lovely Christmas lunch here. The service was great! We had a charming waiter Brad taking care of us. It was a prix fixe menu but they very kindly accommodated my lactose allergy for the first course. The food was delicious. I had the lamb chops which were cooked perfectly and my husband had the grouper which was moist.
Our Christmas Eve dinner at Red Stag Grill was a wonderful experience. Each course was well prepared and the portions were just right. The only improvement would have been a bit of seasoning on the grouper I had. The staff was very attentive, especially our waiter, Harrison, and made our dinner delightful. The ambience was so cozy and comfortable. Thank you for making our Anniversary/Christmas date memorable!
Ordered a soup, got about 3oz..... almost comical how little was there.
Orders shrimp & grits, it was good but the shrimp were over cooked.
Ordered some burgers, they were good, could have used some more of the tomato jam. They only put a small spot in the center of the bun so I didn’t taste it till I was almost half way done.
The young lady that was our server was great.
We came here a few days before with out a reservation and the service was BEYOND terrible. We had to go to the bar to order because they would not come to the table. The bartender was VERY rude and stared at us like we were complete idiots. After we received our food we asked for a condiment twice, and it appeared as if he PURPOSELY forgot both times. Every time we looked at him he would look away. It was not busy at all, I believe that he is just lazy and has some false sense of entitlement because he is a bartender at the red stag...... I am a business owner and I would be embarrassed to have this happening in my establishment, I hope there is something done about this because I will only advise people to save there money and go to another one of the 100+ fantastic restaurants in Asheville who give great food AND great service.
Highly recommend making reservations. The food was excellent and well worth trying. We had lunch there, which was light yet very satisfying. For dinner we had the chef's menu with wine pairing. Each course was unique, delicious and paired perfectly with the recommended wines. Each meal & course we had had great presentation.
Red Stag is set in a marvelous, old hotel, The Grand Bohemian. If you like classic rustic, this is your place; but our first trip after many to Asheville.
While rustic, the setting was quite formal, relatively quiet with a dark but pleasant atmosphere. Dark wood and stuffed chairs enhanced the comfort and relaxation factor. We were seated promptly with Sarah as our server. She kept a close eye on us with courteous and informative service totally without any rush factor; all of which was great. Brava, ma'am!
We both went with the 4 course tasting menu, which was completely and accurately explained by Sarah. Portions were limited as explained but proved to be most ample especially with the addition of the whole grain and white baguette. The roasted pear salad was well crafted with a good mix of greens, additions and dressing. A great start to the variety to follow.
The appetizer, a pan seared scallop of good size was accompanied by grilled Brussels sprout and cauliflower contrasted with the crunch of hazelnuts. A well crafted light palate tickler for the entree to follow.
The very tender and mild portion of elk loin was cooked an appropriate medium rare yet was warm throughout. The flavor was enhances with a mildly sweet red wine reduction. Accompaniments included "Crushed" potatoes (think mashed with lumps), a couple of spears of broccolini and half a roasted shallot. It was a fine combination even with a basically flavorless shallot which, if nothing else, added a bit of color.
All was capped by a very moist and flavorful (and ample) slice of Carrot Cake. Filled with pecans, it served to put a grand finishing touch on a highly enjoyed evening.
The regular wine pairing was totally in keeping with the food and arrived in half-pours which proved appropriate. The final three were flavorful and well paired. Preference says, "Replace the brut" as it added little beyond bland.
Time and money well spent!
Too many choices in Asheville to be just mediocre. Expensive for just good food. Should have blown me away and it didn't. Had to take a 5:00 reservation to get a table but when we got there the place was empty except one other table. Even by 6:30 when we left there were still plenty of empty tables. I will say the place is gorgeous. Quiet enough for my hearing impaired 81 year old mother to enjoy.
