Went there to celebrate our anniversary and had a fabulous meal! Returned the next night for drinks at the bar to listen to Ray tickle the ivories. Great vibe!
One of my absolute favorites in Asheville! Had another amazing meal and will most certainly be back again next time we visit.
Great Special place. Have dined there before. Would visit there again.
I am conflicted about this dining experience. Our server was terrific but the cuisine was not. My husband ordered sampling menu and was satisfied. I ordered squash soup which was good but not exceptional. My entree, duck breast with roasted veggies and mashed potatoes was nearly inedible due to the high level of salt. The restaurant compensated me with with a gratis dessert but when the most important part of dinner is bad, cake is not appealing. We were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and no one even wished us happy anniversary! Don’t know why Open Table includes option to designate special occasions if restaurants don’t bother to utilize the information.
Red Stag is simply the best of the eclectic cuisine Asheville has to offer. Location - interesting, service - excellent and food - A+++. Could not ask for more in town for a good place for any type of nice dinner.
We had an awesome dining experience.
Great Food! Our waiter, David, was very attentive without being annoying. We will back.
While the meal was good I would not say it was exceptional, which is what you would expect for $50+ plates. The noise level was loud and although we requested a private setting ( we were celebrating our 28th anniversary), we were seated in a banquet-style bench with several others. Our waiter was mediocre and seemed to rush off into "the weeds" regularly. My husband requested brussel sprouts in place of the asparagus, but was served the asparagus anyway. He had to point it out to the server who did get the correct dish fairly quickly. The cocktails were delicious but also a bit high-priced. The hotel lobby, bar and restaurant were quite stunning which makes you wonder, with such an opulent setting, why the overall restaurant service wasn't better.
Exellent ambiance, nicely decorated! The filet and halibut were exceptional!
I will be dining at Red Stag again on my next trip to Asheville.
Exceptional service and very fresh food !! Lobster and shrimp chowder was to die for! Olives and almonds is a great salty savory snack !
Great atmosphere but the food was really underwhelming.
Absolutely the best decor of any restaurant I’ve ever been to. Ambiance is incredible !!. The food is somewhat adventurous and is trying to be different, which I applaud. While well prepared, the tastes fall a bit flat. The prices are too high but to be expected. Light up menus are really cool!
We had wonderful service and food! Highly recommend this restaurant. Our waiter immediately greeted us with, “Happy tenth anniversary” and with complimentary champagne. A great experience for our special occasion!
We have eaten here and stayed in the hotel. It is very distinctive and pricey so I suggest you review the menu before you make a reservation. My scallops were delicious and my husband loved his steak and lobster! Great service!
Went for our anniversary and absolutely loved it! Service was friendly and wonderful, seasonal cocktails were fun, and the food was absolutely delicious! Thanks for an amazing night.
We both experienced the tasting menu with wine accompaniment. Service, food, and wines were excellent. Have to be willing to be a bit an adventurist for the entree but we found it tender and tasty.
Very nice! Great food and service! A must try!
My husband and I had a fantastic birthday dinner here! I’m always a little weary about eating at a “hotel restaurant,” but this is a gem. Their menus light up. My grandma would love this!! I absolutely loved the halibut, ribeye and the flowerless chocolate cake was one of the best desserts I’ve had in a very long time. Service was excellent. Everything was so fresh and local. Hopping bar scene. We’ll be back!
Still a favorite restaurant but wasn’t impressed by the fish and chips lunch special. Very greasy too heavy breading. Otherwise a top notch place for lunch or dinner
Menu choices quite varied & encouraging. Waiter promoted Antelope as prepared tender & delicious, but execution of dish rendered it chewy & tough. Deserts likewise only good....trying too hard to make themselves special. Did not have several wines listed, out of Grand Marnier after dinner as well, claimed at end of month they run out... ?
The restaurant interior was in the style of a hunting lodge, well appointed and very attractive. Our server Danielle was attentive, professional and very friendly.
The meals were less so. I had the corn blue crab chowder to start, it was very bland even for corn chowder, very little in the way of layer flavors or spice. For the main course I had the duck and my wife had halibut. My duck was prepared very well and cooked to my order with a very nice fruit/berry sauce. However, the duck was accompanied by a lions head mushroom that was incredibly bitter. The halibut was OK but nothing special. My wife found bones in the filet.
The reviews we read led us to expect something exceptional and we were disappointed. It was good but temper your expectations.
Slowest service ever!
Food was good but all sides are extra, adding up to a hefty bill.
we were here in 2016 for anniversary and had a spectacular waitress and food was exceptional. with such a good time - we made reservations again for anniversary.
i did make mention the reservation was for anniversary. 1. we were seated in the middle of the restaurant- not romantic at as as in our first visit 2. asked waiter about any specials, he said there was none, but overheard the another waiter telling someone about special 3. waiter was not attentive 4. husband rib eye was not the quality we expected for the cost. 5. we both had great difficulty cutting our meat. the knives were dull, and our plates scooted all over the table when trying to cut meat.
will not go back again for awhile
Food Over Priced. Service Outstanding. Ambiance very interesting.
We've been going to Red Stag for years. Until recently, it has always delighted us on our special occasions. Recently it hasn't. Earlier this week, it was its worst. Crying babies were seated throughout -- instead of together at one end or the other of the restaurant. Service was poor -- we sat for 10 minutes before our server showed up, then another ten for our wine bottle to be opened and decanted. Then we finally decided to pour our own wine. The capper was the steak. It was virtually inedible. Hard to get a steak knife through it. And under-cooked. Medium rare comes out rare, and medium comes out medium well. We were not charged for dessert or corkage, presumably because it was a birthday, which was appreciated, and we tipped our server over 20% for those favors. We very disappointingly won't be returning to Red Stag again. It's certainly not the fine restaurant it once was.
This place was outstanding. Everything about this place was very nice. The service, the food, the atmosphere. Had an amazing time. I proposed to my fiancé that night. It was the perfect place to do.
This is my first review on Open Table even though we dine a lot through the reservation system. This was a phenomenal meal. The calamari starter was crispy and the sauce was just right. The Carolina Peach Salad was superb. My wife had the Halibut and I have the Filet and Lobster with crab. Our expectations were more than exceeded. The Grilled Lemon Poundcake with blueberry compote was a little dry, but all the pieces were in place for a great desert except maybe it was a day old?? Service by David A was outstanding. The restaurant is dark, but it works. The backlit menus are interesting and necessary due to the light. Decor is that of a game lodge, but it works. Kessler has done a great job on this property and restaurant in particular. After the meal, we took the elevator up to one of the floors to just take a peek. The hallway was spectactular, so I am assuming the rooms are as well.
This is the second time we have had
lunch here while visiting Asheville. The crab and corn chowder was excellent and the shrimp and grits were the best that my husband has ever had. My son and myself had two different fantastic salads with lots of veggies and smoked chicken. The Red Stag did not disappoint. We will be back again when we visit.
Awesome food great service killer atmosphere and our server Brad was excellent. Definitely a go to date night spot for Asheville
Took my wife to The Red Stagg Grill for our 1 one year wedding anniversary. We showed up early so we had a drink from the bar, the rum old fashioned was one of the best I've had. We were sat at the table I requested in my reservation and split the Hunt Board to start. Note: the mustard is very good but hot!! My wife ordered the ribeye and I had the elk tenderloin, both came out cooked perfectly and tasted great.
I will definitely be eating here again when I visit Asheville.
One of the best halibut dishes I’ve ever eaten. Husband had the elk loin and he said it was excellent. One could think it would be touristy but not tasty food but this would be a misconception. It was a first class meal. Would happily eat here again when in Asheville.
Met a friend for lunch that I had not seen for a while. Great time catching up!
We went for brunch and the food was very good! I would make reservations again and send my friends/family there! Great for special occasions or just for something different!
Excellent venue - classy with superb service! Very friendly, professional & courteous - the food is greet!
We enjoyed dinner at Red Stagg Grill during our recent visit to Asheville. We dined early, before going to a special event across the street at the Biltmore Estate, and it was convenient, delicious food, great service and a comfortable atmosphere. We will go back again the next time we're in Asheville.
This was our second visit to this establishment. The service is outstanding! The food amazing! If you get a chance, enjoy their Christmas Dinner! You will not regret your decision.
Our waitress - Karen (Spelling??) was by far, one of the best waitresses we have ever encountered.
Overall impression for first time diners: Disappointing, and not very welcoming. Started with confusion as we entered bar for an aperitif, as we waited to be seated and no one came for a while. Moved chairs around ourselves to seat our 3 person party, with a full team of employees watching us. Would not have killed someone to help us. Instead of a warm welcome, was reminded strongly by our greeter to close bar tab before dinner. OK, no prob...but annoying to hear more than once. Dinner was fine, but very expensive for what we got. Restaurant very dark.
Ashevillians, nothing so terrible, but do think there are other superior alternative choices around.
on vacation, recommended from a friend, delicious breakfast!
