Red Salt at Ko’a Kea Resort
During morning hours, Red Salt offers tropical takes on traditional breakfast dishes, such as lobster benedict and lemon-pineapple soufflé pancakes, recently featured by Food Network.
I really liked Red Salt the first few times I've eaten there. The last two time have been less than stellar. This last meal was substandard. The octopus salad was so overdressed that I couldn't eat the lettuce. The menu was exactly the same as a year before, no new items. The beet salad was puny and not very appetizing. I will not be going back
We had great expectations for this evening but were very disapponted. The service was so-so. Although fewer than half the tables were occupied when we arrived, we were taken to an inferior table and had to ask to be moved. Our server was quick to bring us water but then spent a lot of time chatting to customers at other tables while we waited for her return. The food was uneven. My seared foie gras was good but my wife’s beet salad was very mundane with a nondescript dressing. Her snapper was well cooked but rested on a bed of stone cold rice. My ahi was seared nicely but was slathered with a flavourless mayonnaisse-like sauce and sprinkled with furikake seasoning, the dried fish component of which completely overwhelmed the delicate tuna. My wines, pinot noir with the foie gras and albarino with the ahi were mediocre considering the prices. The venue was attractive but the noise level generated just by the diners was overwhelming. All in all, not the pleasant evening we had anticipated.
Waited for entrees for about an hour. When we asked to get it to go. It took another 20 minutes.
My husband ordered the 12 oz ribeye. I tasted it and it was delicious. He really enjoyed it. I ordered the butternut squash soup and spinach ravioli. The soup was a little on the thin side and lacked depth. The sauce on the ravioli was a little too watery and could have had a bit more flavor. Our waiter was excellent and quite attentive. Ambience is lovely.
The Ahi was recommended by Chris and it was amazing! I have recommended Red Salt to friends visiting and it did not disappoint. We will be going again before heading back home.
While the burger and lobster gnocchi were excellent, every part of the meal was less than desirable. The mahi-mahi, roasted chicken, and spinach ravioli were on the more flavorless side. The Brussels sprouts were also raw. The beer selection while small is rather interesting, however the wine selection was poor and seemed rather limited. The service was fantastic and very attentive, but the restaurant had no ambiance and the noise level was moderate to loud throughout the evening. In my opinion Red Salt is a nice restaurant but not worth the price with quality of the food and weak ambience.
The menu is very good and every choice we made was fantastic! Our waitress Hannah was perfect and gave us time to make choices, but was there when we needed her. Highly recommend the scallop appetizer. Rather pricey but well worth it.
We went here to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and the staff immediately made us feel welcome and special. The service was great, and the food was superb. We don’t go home for another week, and my husband said we are coming back so he can get the snapper again! Highly recommend this place for a special occasion.
Fabulous meal and amazing service!!
Food and service is surprisingly good as I find the combination of the two hard to come by on Kauai. Food amazing and creative. I had the wasabi crusted ahi with mushroom risotto. To die for. My husband the ribs, so, so soft and tasty. From appetizer to desert! Amazing! BUT! The noise level ruins significantly the experience. We both had a headache. However there is a bar section away from restaurant which seems to have less noise. But why no music? Or attempt to cut down noise bounce? It amazes me how little restaurants care about ambiance and soothing environment for the senses while eating. As the dinning experince should not be catering just to the sense of taste!
New Years Eve
A couple dishes were very salty.
Beet salad had few beets.
We had our Christmas dinner at Red Salt and it was wonderful! We would definitely go back.
Some food ok, some not great. Steak very good, ahi tartar very good, esparagus very poor, very old. Without being asked, waiter apologized 3 times for food service being slow. He kept saying sorry, but kitchen is slow tonight. Very noisy in restaurant, surprising since it's not that large. Had the chef's sampler...it was mostly tasty, but esparagus old, mashed potatoes almost runny, and portions were so very very small. Ate a bunch of bread and still left restaurant feeling hungry. At almost $80 for the sampler, poor value for money.
Christmas Eve dinner with the family. Drinks were all perfect - best scallops appetizer we’ve ever had - fantastic. One son had the fix price meal and they graciously substituted the fillet for the lamb - he loved it! Daughter had the Christmas Eve special dinner a small
Fillet, an awesome cream soup starter and great desert. My oldest son had the gnocchi with lobster and it was awesome. My crusted ahi tuna was the best I’ve ever had. However, the mahi my wife had was the piese de resistance!
I’ve never had anything but great food here!
Everything was great except the tomatoes in the burrata salad were not ripe at all and very hard.
The restaurant is quite cold. So dress warm. The food feels like it has been cooked once and then put together again. The meat suggests a double cook or it is just very dry. Out of party of 4, one meal was good. The rest below par.
A hidden gem in Poipu. On the pricey side with $20 martinis and a $50 hamburger, but worth it for a special occasion or if you don't care about spending a stack of money on dinner. The service was outstanding and very friendly. Our favorite perk was the bread and butter served with red salt (hence the name). The food was expertly prepared and presented. We will most definitely return to this place.
We had another wonderful dinner with great service. We dine here about 4 times a year, 45 min drive from Kapaa.
We will be back in the Spring
Mediocre. Lack of flavor development. Completely flat.
We ordered 2 dishes which we planned to split, mainly because we both love Osso Buco, but we are also trying to eat less red meat. I ordered the red snapper which was tasty, especially the dipping sauce.
The Osso Bucco was a huge disappointment because there was no marrow in the bone with the hole in it.
“The marrow in the hole in the bone, a prized delicacy, is the defining feature of the dish.” Wikipedia. “Bone marrow is the prize in the rustic veal-shank stew osso buco.” The Post and Courier.
We have enjoyed Osso Buco in many many restaurants over the years (It was my 70th birthday that night!) and all had the marrow in the bone. At Red Salt, the dish was described as short ribs Osso Bucco. If there were just short rib bones, we would have understood, but we were presented with a nice large bone marrow bone in the dish which was totally empty of marrow. We were stunned that such an upscale restaurant would do such a thing.
We did not have a pleasurable eating experience at this restaurant. Although one coffee was free, we waited a long time to get it. The second coffee that was ordered, a spoon or sugar wasn't brought and we had to wait for that too. A reservation was made to celebrate a birthday. Instead of receiving a dessert, we received a dessert menu. A 'Happy Birthday' was said only once upon our arrival to check in. These reservations were made over 1 month in advance. It was a disappointing experience.
We have dined here numerous times and always have an amazing meal.
Service was great, but food was nothing to write home about.
Small, rather intimate setting inside the Koa Kea hotel. Food is delicious, with great presentation. The service is excellent. The food is definitely a bit pricey, probably the most pricey we've seen in the Poipu area... but delicious. Definitely worth it if you're looking to splurge.
There is no self-parking at the hotel, valet parking is required.
Nice place but food was a bit off. Had the lobster gnocchi which was super salty (and I like salt). The place is very noisy and has no sound absorbing material. The dining room is in a partial circle and has an amphitheater like effect that allows you to hear what everyone is saying at each table. Service was excellent and the chocolate creme brûlée's was wonderful!
Wonderful experience! I would recommend to go there at least once per trip to Kauai.
Adequate portion size. Casual dining room, decor trending towards sterile. Seemed a bit understaffed when I visited. The food while visually pleasing didn't impress as much as expected from reading other reviews. Given the price range, tablecloths might be an option management may want to consider.
Great atmosphere within the Koa Kea Resort. The host initially seated us by the exit door with the overhead light out- why would you seat anybody there? But he accommodated our desire for a better table. Our server was amazing- so attentive, kind and knowledgeable. We can highly recommend the charred octopus appetizer. The burrata and tomato salad had enough cheese for 4 diners but was overall great. The lobster and gnocchi was another delicious dish; the ahi not so much - texture of the ahi was odd, almost wobbly. It was a special evening out, and worth the price.
Excellent service. Great ambiance. Restaurant had a nice vibe. Excellent Salad and entree.
Red Salt was a last-minute addition to our itinerary and we specifically chose it because of the chef. On the website we were using to find a special occasion restaurant, Red Salt was the only restaurant categorized as 'Hawaiian' versus 'Fine Dining' or 'Seafood'. Truly, it is all three and more!
My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. Our waiter was able to tell us a bit about the dishes we chose (the Ahi and Mahi-Mahi dinner plates), and he provided fantastic recommendations for wine pairings. We also had the scallop appetizer and coconut shrimp soup, both wonderful! The ambience was the relaxing and intimate evening we were hoping for, and we would love to visit again.
Pricey but delicious. View is more of the pool than the ocean. Service outstanding.
We really liked the host. He was incredibly friendly. The server I believe talked the table out of ordering the tomahawk steak and I think he talked every other table out of it as well which is bad for the restaurant and his tip as it was by far the most expensive thing on menu and we didn’t see anyone in the restaurant order it. The regular steak was very good. The vanilla Mahi Mahi was bland and did not taste like vanilla at all. The chicken was very good. Overall, we were disappointed though with the restaurant which is basically just a hotel lobby and the overall value for our money.
We went for a special occasion. The dinner was superb and she loved the ambiance and the food.
I want to shed light on the service. Our waiter was so professional, knowledgeable and added to the overall experience! Bravo to him.
Thank you for making the evening such a memorable experience for us.
See you again
The food and service at Red Salt was excellent. Our server was attentive, pleasant and friendly! We had lobster and short ribs, and both were delicious.
We had a great experience at Red Salt. The food was delicious and fantastic service. We will return next time we are in Kauai.
Both the restaurant manager and our server were knowledgeable, courteous and personable. The cocktails were refreshing and every morsel Of food we were served Was delicious and presented as we requested.
We were on Kauai over Thanksgiving. We had the choice of the special Chef's Tasting menu or their traditional Tasting menu so we ordered one of each. They were both uniquely amazing. Our waiter was great and made sure we enjoyed our experience. We were away from home for the haoliday but the staff made us feel like family.
