Red Rooster Harlem Ratings and Reviews
This was the first time I have been to Red rooster after hearing about it for years. I expected it to be way overpriced but it turned out to be priced quite reasonably considering how plentiful and delicious the food was. Also the ambience is great. However it is quite loud. More of a party scene than a romantic date night. That being said it’s perfect for all occasions. I got the barbecue ribs and while ribs are my favorite food, these were not the best ribs I’ve ever had. Sylvia’s still has them beat on that one. However they were very good that being said my friends ordered the honey fried chicken with sweet potatoes and collard greens and those were by far the most incredible dish! Highly recommend them! On top of everything the service was exceptional and the style of everyone including the waiters was awesome. Definitely a must for any New Yorker or tourist
I though the hostess service was rather poor. Although the decorum is kind of funky the ambience is very loud. There seems to be a kind of "attitude" in terms of service... a kind of "it's a privilege for you to spend money here". The food was better than average. In short, I say go only if it's convenient and you have a lot of time...
Because of the great reviews we saw on yelp, we traveled from Philadelphia and decided to give it a try and we didn’t know what the hype was all about. We ordered the deviled eggs and it was very salty. The cornbread was actually good. Chicken and waffle was ok! You think for $17 it would be better than Waffle House. And we also ordered the yardbird and it was ok. Collard greens had a weird taste. Not your typical Sunday collard greens! Everything was very expensive for not an expensive taste! Very disappointed for a first time visit! Overall, our service was great!!
We were welcomed even though we were half an hour early which is nice.
Our attendant was not in a good mood for some reason, wasn't friendly and very accommodating making us feel like not welcome at all but we let it pass.
Deviled Eggs - it was refreshing especially with the crunch at the end with the chicken skin. A must try.
Helga's Meatballs - they were savory though were a little bit tough and chewy
We got the PRIX FIXE which is priced at 25 at the time of this post
1a Rooster Chopped Salad - the salad is good and that spiced walnuts gives it a good crunch
1b Hot Honey Yardbird - crispy on the outside, tender on the inside matched with sweet potato and collard greens which goes well with it.
Got only 1 piece (drumstick) which was enough, not sure if this was because of the PRIX FIXE. The other person who ordered the same Hot Honey Yardbird got 2 pieces.
2a Charred Squash Bisque - really really good was surprised myself.. Berbere cream and roasted pistachio gave it a whole new texture
2b Shrimp And Grits - my friend really liked it and it has a little bit of kick (spiciness) to it which is good.
Donuts - you get three pieces of mini donuts. They were good to match with a double shot of espresso or americano
Food was delicious! It was a bit pricey but great for a special occasion. I took my friend for her birthday, and she LOVED it. Two of the items I ordered were "out of stock", which was disappointing. It was only 6:30pm on a Sunday. Otherwise, we had a great experience. There was live jazz and an overall fun ambiance. I live in Harlem, and I'm thrilled to have this amazing restaurant in the neighborhood for special occasions.
the reviews about the food is right on point. The food is very very very good
the restaurant looks big, the outside eating area is nice. The bar is packed, the restaurant behind the bar is somewhat small.
We were so full, we did not try dessert. I would definitely go back
I would recommend this place
What started as an evening full of wonderful expectations and excited turned into underwhelming disappointment. Spotty customer service from our direct waitress, waiting over an hour for our entrees while watching others around us come and go and even a disconnect of sincerity from management when I mentioned concerns. I doubt very strongly that we will be back to give Red Rooster another chance. Which is a little sad considering I adore Marcus Samuelsson and all that he stands for. Maybe I’ll change my mind in the future.
Extremely loud. About an hour from ordering to delivery of entrees. I asked server to
compare the two chicken dishes. He told me which one he preferred with no detail. I️ ordered the other because of accompanying veggies. It was too spicy to enjoy. Left most of it. Server should have said it’s spicy. Others in my party liked the food and the experience.
This restaurant is WONDERFUL! The ambiance is great fun and the wait staff are very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Even so, the star of the show is the food! Oh my, the food is amazing. Our group tried a lot of different things including: the steak, the chicken and waffles, the shrimp and grits, and the ribs -- all of it was really good. Many of the items have a great spicy zing to them. We also had a great chopped salad, the wonderful cornbread and, my favorite of the whole night the AMAZING Brussels Sprouts. The desserts were also wonderful including a terrific take on cheese cake. You cannot go wrong here -- it's delicious!
overall a bit of a let down. flavors were either too hot or totally bland and dry. the acoustics upstairs are tough. the bar being upfront (50% of floor area) demands an active and vibrant atmosphere but it causes the dinner area to suffer mightily. good service though. very attentive and polite. pretty expensive for the neighborhood and quality you get.
Hadn't been able to get to NYC in a while. Had read the chef's biography and had been wanting to try the restaurant for some time. Was able to make a reservation for the day i would be in NY , and some foodie friends who live there had not been to the restaurant before and were able to join me. We shared 3 of the brunch sides-the brussel sprouts were particularly good. The cornbread was out standing. The place was lively and the service friendly and the right amt of attentive. Looking forward to reading the cookbook.
I had seen this restaurant on one of the cooking shows. This place is nice with great service. The food was really good. We had the chicken and catfish entree which was way overpriced. We paid almost $30 for ea ch meal. We also had the cornbread which was good but a little cold. Overall it was worth the trip up to Harlem and would definitely return
We really enjoyed the whole experience. Having read Marcus’s memoir and knowing his goal for Red Rooster, hats off to him for completely succeeding. It was a great night! It is so clear Marcus is a special chef and person. The staff was outstanding and friendly!
First time for me at this place. The food and drinks was good, bigger portions then expected. Good quality in everything. Service could be better, has room for improvements. I think that the sound from the live music was a little to much. Had problems having a conversation with all at my table. But it was good music just a little bit to loud for me and my company. Overall a nice experience and I may go back if I get back to New York! But you definitely need to try this, you will not get disappointed.
What a fun spot! It takes a skilful chef to riff on soul food classics with creativity yet respect for tradition while maintaining an amazing balance of flavours. Every dish I’ve had has that magical way of evolving flavours within and between mouthfuls and I’ve never seen that done so deftly with such strong flavours and textures. Add to that the best atmosphere in NYC and what can I say? If it brings white folks north of 96th it must be special
This is my 2nd time here and I was disappointed with the chicken and waffle! The first time it was awsommme and I was raving about it to my firends. We went with them yesterday and everyone was not impressed with the dish. It was totally diff and small and waffle was half size, soggy, and dark meat with bone!! Bloody Mary still the best!
We ordered: Hot Honey Yardbird, Rooster (Short Rib) Braise of the Day and Grits split between two people. The skin of the Yardbird was well-seasoned and delicious but I found that the rest of the chicken was flavourful. The grits and the short rib braise were done well and I'd definitely order it again.
